If you want a truly authentic Japanese experience then this is the place. Everything is so well thought out, beautifully executed, attention to detail, and the staff were so attentive and kind.

It is a great experience staying in a historic, traditional Japanese inn (ryokan). The bath was interesting, the room was incredible big and overlooking the river, the roll-down futons where fun. The shared bathrooms weren't that much of a problem in the end. The dinner and service experience is absolutely amazing. We also went to the Hakone Yuryo traditional Japanese public bath. It is walking distance from this inn and we preferred the bath there.
We booked this Ryokan last minute and it was the most expensive night of our japan trip. We are glad we did it for the experience.

Everything - authentic interior, Japanese robes, private onsen, incredible food, attentive staff, room overlooking the river
Quite expensive but half board and onsen are included.
