Hotel Rathausglöckel

I have known Baden Baden for many years and have stayed in a number of hotels there. A while back we had dinner at the Rathausgloeckel and were impressed enough to want to stay there. We booked a room and were then upgraded to a suite at very little extra cost. There is a rather nice roof terrace but to use it you would have to carry your own food and drink up several flights of stairs as there was no one, as far as we could see, who was assigned to that area. The location in the old town is perfect, giving easy access to places of interest, restaurants and shops.

The air conditioning could have been more powerful. Admittedly we were there during something of a heatwave. but a second unit in the bedroom area would have helped a lot. The only problem was the stairs! Two rather steep flights to get to our suite, about which we were advised in advance, but there was no one to help with our luggage, which was disappointing because neither of us is in the first flush of youth.

I’m surprised by such a high score. While nothing was particularly awful, the overall quality of facilities does not justify the price. For this price, they could have invested in a good mattress and pillow! Mattress felt cheap. There was only one pillow and it was lumpy and uncomfortable. Wifi was slow during peak hours and kept disconnecting. The shower was leaking really bad. My room was next to the reception and from 8 am in the morning, I couldnt sleep because of the noise. About the service: my request to get a different pillow was ignored, despite pillow selection upon request being advertised! Also during checkout, the receptionist charged me for sekt instead of wine(mini bar), I told her I had wine which is cheaper than sekt, but she insisted, I was not in the mood to argue for 1 eur… all of this was quite weird.
