"I loved everything. The location is beautiful. It’s tucked away so you feel like you’re in the countryside. The views are beautiful. The room was cosy and very comfortable."
More of a heads up: The fighter jets were both amazing and very loud/scary for my noise sensitive 6 year old!

The location is lovely, with fantastic views north across the Dyfi valley from the balcony. The music room downstairs would have been a nice room to take breakfast had the balcony not been suitable in bad weather, and was equipped with an honesty bar. The bed was comfy.
The breakfast basket was left the previous night and therefore bread items weren’t as fresh as they could have been, and on our first night no milk or yogurt was left in our mini-fridge. The bathroom light above the basin wasn’t working (switch) and on the second morning having breakfast on the balcony was spoiled by the smell of drains. The hotel is undergoing some renovation we understand which didn’t affect our stay but hopefully will result in a better experience in future. We would prefer a more modern decor and a tv that could be watched from a better angle (in our room it was rather bizarrely placed despite there being a blank wall opposite the bed).

What a beautiful, quirky place! We very much enjoyed our stay, the room and en suite were very clean and welcoming. The balcony with its wicker table, chairs and beautiful view were an added bonus.
The music room/bar/dining room was delightful. We loved the quirky decor and opulent touches.
We had no problem with gaining entry, instructions were very clear.
The grounds are beautiful, with some lovely little walks. Dog friendly (which is very different from dog ‘tolerant’), with garden area for dogs and towels provided for muddy paws.
The little fridge and breakfast basket were also a nice touch. My kind of breakfast!
We booked our room last minute, and the price was very reasonable.
I would highly recommend Plas Dolguog to anyone looking for something a little different in a beautiful setting.

We stayed at Plas Dolguog in August 2026, and our overall impression was that the estate has enormous potential, but also requires considerably more attention.
The estate is within walking distance of Machynlleth, making it easy to explore the town and its attractions. The property itself is beautifully situated, with wonderful views and a lovely garden.
In terms of hospitality, however, there is still a lot to improve, and the experience falls short of what most guests would expect from a B&B at this price point.
We appreciate that this is an old mansion, and we genuinely enjoyed much of its quirkiness and character. However, some basic improvements are essential to make a stay here comfortable and worth the price. The floor in our room was extremely uneven, to the point where it genuinely felt as though we were sleeping on a boat, and we had to adjust our position in bed to avoid feeling as though we might roll off. The bathroom also felt as though it would benefit from a more thorough deep clean and some basic attention to detail. One of the glasses was dirty, presumably not replaced after the previous guests, and there was no hook or hanger where we could leave clothes or a towel.
We were lucky to have good weather during our stay, which meant that we could enjoy our balcony and use it as an extension of the room. Had the weather been worse (as it often can be in Wales) the room would have felt rather small for anything beyond sleeping. The only alternative was the music room, which currently consists of several tables, one sofa and two chairs. For an estate of this size, there should be more comfortable communal space to relax. I understand that the idea here is for guests to make use of the beautiful garden, but the weather will not always allow that, and there should be a comfortable indoor alternative.
The biggest disappointment, however, was the breakfast. When booking, I initially did not notice that the B&B did not offer a served breakfast and instead provided breakfast baskets. I later received messages clearly explaining the concept, so I knew what to expect. Nevertheless, I was very disappointed by what was actually provided. The basket contained milk, yoghurt, orange juice, granola, bread, butter, jam, honey and a pastry. It was rather basic for the price of the stay.
