A very special place to stay. Beautiful, peaceful and surrounded by nature and filled with history and art, collected by the family over various generations. Very hospitable owner. We slept really well, even though it was the hottest day in Europe, with so many trees and nature around it, we had a great temperature during the night and a very restful stop in our way back home.

Good location. Pleasant staff. Very French. Interesting rooms downstairs with lovely antiques.
Difficult access down a 3km track and not easy to find. Our room though lovelyhad a disgusting shower area which needs complete renovation such a shame. Also new bed linen required I don’t think ours had ever seen an iron! The evening meal was not value for money although some what compulsory due to difficult journey back into Salbris. Patio chairs and tables needed a good clean too.

Such an interesting chateau full beautiful paintings and antique s. The host was absolutely charming
Perhaps the road to get to the château was a bit bumpy but this adds to the romance of the place

Such an unique property. The country house of a painter, at the end of a 3km road, in the middle of woods
Aude is à very welcoming host

Lovely, large characterful rooms in this beautiful old building. Our host, Ause, showed tremendous flexibility when we needed to bring our booking forward by 24 hours because of an error on our part. The food was good too. We took the evening meal option, which was nicely presented and convivial. The bed was large and comfortable. Excellent service from Aude during our stay.
The lack of Wi-fi is unusual these days and surely, easily remedied? Also lack of credit card facilities means that one has to retain enough cash to pay for dinner.

This place really is astonishing. Built in 1870, now owned by the 6th generation of the family, set in the middle of a forest down 2 miles of dirt track, the lawns regularly dug up by wild boar, the river Sauldre at the bottom of the garden... Aude, who runs the place, is great. It's excellent value for money, and the bedroom was easily the largest we have ever slept in. We also loved the way everybody talked to everybody else before and over dinner (we were 12 on our first night there) - you would never get that in a hotel.
Not much. It's a chambre d'hote, after all, not a hotel, and you have to take it at that level. Provided quirky is your thing, and you can cope with a house that smells old (but by no means unpleasant), and which creaks a bit at night, it's great.

Extraordinary historic house owned by the granddaughter of the French artist who had it built in 1870. A place of real character in all respects. A wonderful host who makes everyone's stay very special. The breakfast was excellent too.
The track to the house is a bit rough on the car's suspension, so you have to drive very slowly. If you've not researched exactly how to reach the house through the forest, it could be difficult to find, especially at night. But I did that and found it with no trouble. The GPS gave wrong directions but I knew not to use it.

Breakfast was a very good continental, with fresh produce. The optional dinner was also vert tasty and good value.
The hotel is located remotely in the woods so very quiet and we had a good nights sleep, but it is a 10-15 minute drive up a track.
The hotel has the air of neglect the French do well about it. Faded grandeur.

Breakfast was lovely, pre booked meal was also great. The location and setting is very peaceful. The grounds are lovely. Communication from the host was spot on.
The terrace needed some umbrellas as it was very hot.

We had a nice stay here, the location is close to the highway and the explanations to get there from the host were perfect. Great surroundings in the middle of nature and very nice that we could have a lovely home-cooked dinner upon arrival!
The line between beautiful classic and getting shabby/needing replacement was fairly thin. Breakfast was also quite limited, for 1 morning it was fine but if you stay longer I wouldn't recommend it.

Fantastic location- ex-hunting lodge with antique furniture and wonderful oil paintings. Host went to extraordinary lengths to make sure we were comfortable
A larger sign on the main road would have been really helpful, as my phone sent us way off in the wrong direction.
The shower room was a bit old-fashioned (but very clean).

This is a unique hotel- an old hunting lodge in the middle of the forest, which has been in the same family since 1870. No wifi and no tv, this is the perfect place for a restful night. It's like stepping back in time in a very good way. The owner, Aude is the perfect welcoming hostess and was friendly and solicitous throughout. We enjoyed a delicious evening meal and breakfast: all the ingredients were local and everything, including drinks, were in the price. The bedrooms were very comfortable, each one different and very quiet. We thoroughly recommend this place and hope to stay again.

This place has a soul and Aude is such a nice person, you feel immediately welcome. We had also great company over dinner, you can get in touch quite easily with other guests. We loved it and can only recommend it if you are looking for something special.

Arriving at Aude's place was a treat in itself: a short drive along a dirt road lead to the majestic olde worlde villa where we were promptly shown to our room which had a faux marble bathroom complete with dressoir and mirrors in the room itself. We had arranged dinner with Aude before arrival and had time before dinner to escape the heat of the August sun down at the river on the property - a short walk past the horses paddock down at the bottom of the garden. The water was sparkling and refreshing and we ended up having an afternoon nap on the banks of the river thanks to the total isolation and peace and quiet of the accommodation. Dinner was an informal, yet artistically presented affair with a mismatch of authentic old cutlery and crockery, much of which looked like family heirlooms. Upon ordering a whisky as aperitif, we received 2 glasses and a bottle of Jamesons was left on our table to help ourselves. The starters Aude served were delicious and one had the sense that the duck, served as main course, was that of a secret family recipe. Aude presented herself as a delightful, humorous and although at times busy, (tending to all 10 guests), always relaxed and engaging host. Our room was comfortable to sleep in and the breakfast, like the rest of the experience at Montboulan, was presented with effortless ease and an eye for detail and good taste. If you are looking for something that is not run of the mill, standard hotel faire, with a quirky and playful charm, this is just the place to find it.
We were aware beforehand that our room would not have an en suite toilet (however it did have the most majestic pink bath fit for Sissi of Austria) but I can imagine if one is not aware of this, it might be an issue for some.
