We had a wonderful weekend staying at Compston House.

We have just enjoyed a perfect long weekend at Compston House. The hosts, Megan and John were friendly, attentive and helpful. The accommodation was spotlessly clean, comfortable and furnished to a high standard. We stayed in a king size loft room and were pleasantly surprised to still be able to enjoy a hot , powerful shower! The skylight was als perfect for a bit of stargazing on a clear night too. There were also daily replenished supplies of pod coffee, teas and biscuits in the room (much appreciated!). We had never stayed in Ambleside before so were pleased that Compston House is perfectly located for access to all the amenities on offer in the town. We definitely intend to stay here again in the future and recommend it without hesitation.

Beautiful B&B run by a lovely family, fabulous breakfast choice and lovely clean room with modern touch. Would definitely stay her again. Unexpected bonus was the close car park we could use with the car park permit included with your stay.

Property was clean. Room was pleasant. Great shower. It was perfectly placed in Ambleside for convenience without being on top of the hustle. Hosts were really lovely and were helpful with any queries. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice.

Amazing location, gorgeous breakfast, friendly staff !!

We had a fantastic stay at this lovely B&B. The staff were so friendly and welcoming—John made check-in a breeze and Meg was absolutely lovely at breakfast. The location was perfect for exploring, and the parking permit was a real gem, giving us access to spots all over the Lakes. Would definitely stay again!

Value for money , good hosts handy location

Breakfast was divine, not rushed, piping hot , more tea/ coffee readily available. Location is very close to town centre, parking permits are offered, I had managed to park for free close by

Nice little B&B in a central location including parking and breakfast.

This is a sweet little B&B run by a husband and wife. It is right in the middle of Ambleside and parking is nearby with a permit provided by the Hotel. Breakfast is good and made to order and served in the small dining room. We were treated with kindness and helped with luggage, even though it was raining. Accommodation in this town isn't cheap and we took the least expensive room at this property as we were on a long holiday. Although the room and bathroom were small and unrenovated, there were small thoughtful touches that felt welcoming and our needs were met. There is no lift at this property.

The house is beautifully kept, full of charm and character, and every detail has clearly been thought through with care and love. The room was spotless, cozy, and so comfortable—we slept better than we have in ages. Breakfast was a real highlight: fresh, delicious, and made with such attention to detail. It felt more like being looked after by old friends than just staying at a guesthouse. John and Megan are the kind of hosts who go above and beyond to make your stay special. They’re warm, attentive without being intrusive, and always ready with great recommendations for local spots. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already planning when we can return. If you’re looking for a truly welcoming place with wonderful hosts, look no further. John and Megan’s B&B is a gem.

Highly recommend - a central place to stay in the Lakes District

The hosts, Meg and John, were extremely friendly and accommodating. We added an extra night at the last minute and they were able to help us out easily. The breakfast was amazing. Such a variety to choose from and so much food. The location was great. Easy to walk everywhere and close to public transport. We had a car and had no trouble with parking.

Warm and friendly hosts who work really hard to offer a great service.

This is the third time we have stayed at Compston House. John and Megan have worked so hard and with such care to build their business. They were very welcoming, and happy for us to leave our luggage for 6 hours after we had checked out, which we really appreciated. Immaculately clean and great attention to detail.

As I'm not personally a fan of cooked breakfasts, some more flexibility would have been great, but maybe I’m unusual in this regard!

Highly Recommended.

Compton House is in an excellent location. We could easily walk everywhere in Ambleside we needed to go to ie shops, restaurants, buses and Ambleside wharf. The hosts were very friendly and helpful with advice and helping us with our luggage. Breakfasts were extensive and John (our hosts) made excellent GF pancakes! Thank you John!! Our room was roomy, warm and bed comfortable. We can highly recommend it.

Fab location, great breakfast, great service

Clean, well presented and well appointed. Nice breakfast room and lounge. Really lovely husband and wife team running the place. I was in the single room and it was great. Good size, own bathroom.

The only thing was that one of the shelves was a bit wobbly and the TV was a bit high up to watch comfortably, but both minor things. The single room is due to be upgraded soon.

A warm welcome in a great location

Great location for the area I wanted to explore & a 2 minute walk from several places to eat. Really warm welcome & great breakfasts.

My room was quite dated, & the shower room was so tiny that if I wanted to use the wash basin I had to leave the door open. There were no spare sockets thrat weren’t already in use so if I wanted to charge my phone or use the hairdryer I had to unplug something else! Both minor irritants though which didn’t prevent me enjoying my stay.

Excellent value for money in the heart of characterful Ambleside

Very good value for money - classic small guest house in a good location: the main bus 'station' is 2 minutes walk away and so is the nearest public car park (free with token provided). Plenty of eating places within easy walking distance. Excellent breakfast - in terms of both choice and quality. Whole building clean and well-maintained.

Points to note, rather than complaints: As is usual in such establishments, no lift. There is a dog. My (single) room was not exactly spacious. The logistics of picking up the parking token are a bit of a challenge when you first arrive; nowhere to stop by the property, so park the car and leave one person to sweet talk the traffic warden if necessary while the other goes to fetch the token. If you arrive during the day at busy times (ie while day-trippers are in the area) you may struggle to find a space in the car parks covered by the token.

Excellent breakfast, great location and we were given a parking permit which is a must for Ambleside. The owners were very friendly and helpful during our stay.

The room was small but we expected it as we have stayed in guest houses in that street before. This is not a problem as we were out and about all day.

Excellent B&B in Ambleside.

The owners were really friendly and helpful. I was made to feel welcome and really enjoyed my stay at Compton House. Breakfast was excellent! The service was very good. I would highly recommend staying at this wonderful b&b. It is ideal if you are travelling by bus, as the main bus interchange at Ambleside is only a short walk away in the next street.
