The staff were polite.
Quite frankly we were both utterly disgusted by the arrangement.
WHY would anyone pay £134 to stay in a 12' x 12' stable when we could have stayed at a travel lodge in the next town!?
WHAT EXACTLY were we paying for!?
The castle wasn't open - the website said the site was closed for the season... but it was NOT clear that booking a room in the coachman's quarters would NOT be in the castle itself.
AGAIN, Why on earth would anyone pay to stay here if they were not staying in the castle!!!?
Absolutely atrocious!
When we arrived, after being shocked that we were not staying IN the castle... we walked into a box-room in the old stables that had a radiator turned off - ICE COLD WEATHER! JANUARY 8TH!
I walked back over to reception to ask about it and a polite woman said it might be on a timer but she'd ask someone to check it out. Nobody came, but the radiator came on... Then after perhaps half an hour it was off again.
Now whether this was a faulty system or designed to save the castle money, we don't know... but it went off and on then stayed off. COLD all night. Needless to say the cafe was closed, no options for dinner or breakfast.
This all needs to be MUCH, MUCH CLEARER on your website!
The coachman's quarters should CLEARLY state on the website that this is NOT inside the castle walls itself!
Regardless of whether you're out of season to the public! WHY RENT IT OUT!?
The main issue for the room itself... the cold/NOISE!
The radiator and wall vibrated, banged and shook to the point we though it was going to burst... Some kind of generator turned on and off throughout the night... going off again rattling and shaking the wall past 3am!!!
Now this wasn't an emergency... as it went off... so we didn't bother anyone by calling the emergency phone across the yard. BUT, it went on and off again all night.
Who needs ghosts when you have that!?

The castle, the history, the birds, great place.
Although some rooms renovated my bathroom was not, paint cracking, the towel heater heated the whole room, no way to turn it down or

I would give this hotel 10 out of 10! When I booked the suite (Room 9), the photos on Booking.com still showed the old furniture and sofas, so it was a lovely surprise to arrive and find everything newly replaced, the new furniture looks fantastic and is super comfortable.
The room itself was an absolute blast, comfy beds, great layout and a handy little kitchen. Even though you can only reheat food there, I appreciated being able to use the shared kitchen in the building opposite for proper cooking. The heating worked perfectly and the room stayed nice and warm throughout our stay.
The staff were friendly, welcoming and always happy to help. A big plus for having an EV charging station, that was incredibly convenient. And I have to mention the local café: the food was next level, especially the beef stroganoff!
Overall, an excellent experience, highly recommend this place and would definitely stay again.
Everything was great

The coach house was lovely and comfortable. The staff were incredibly friendly and it was lovely to experience how proud the Pennington was whom we met that the castle had been in the family 800 years.
WiFi was variable.

Very clean, lovely staff, cooking facilities, excellent location. Free entry to grounds and owl centre. Tea and coffee making facilities in room. Towel sculptures on arrival.
The bathroom had some unsightly areas where the decoration needed attention. Could have benefitted from a storage unit or shelf in the bathroom. Bathroom mirror light didn't work so had to use the bright light through the night. Mattress was not the most comfortable. Could have benefitted from a better map of the grounds.

The bedroom was comfortable and the facilities good ie kitchen, dining room and lounge .
The grounds of the castle are wonderful and the owls and birds of prey fantastic. The whole atmosphere is fabulous.
The castle is located in a lovely part of Cumbria and really central for attractions such as the Ratty steam train
There was nothing we did not like

The castle is incredible, the staff was polite and helpful. The gardens were an absolute treat!
They're pet friendly, even their logo has a cat on, but they don't allow cats!?

Room was quirky, close to Castle gardens and owl centre, very quiet, comfortable. The kitchen and lounge were spacious and well equipped. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
I couldn't get the TV to work until the morning I left, when I realised that I had to unplug either the kettle or bedside light to plug it in! Even then, I couldn't get any live television, just things like Netflix and BBC Sounds. This wasn't a major issue as I was able to watch BBC1 live on my laptop thanks to the very fast wifi!

We ate breakfast at the in-house restaurant/cafe and it was very good. Possibly, there could have been a bit more choice but the dining room (former stable block) was very in keeping with the location.
Owl display - was excellent
Location - outstanding
Gardens and grounds - outstanding
Room - spotless
On site parking - excellent
Staff - very friendly and helpful
The TV didn't work -it didn't bother us but migh have been irritating for some. Reception apologised and said that they will look at it

We were in room 11. It was spacious and comfortable. Nice opening window onto the courtyard. We walked from Ravenglass Railway Station. It took 30 mins.
Bunks were creaky but I fixed it with a Spanish Windlass. There are no bedside lights. Shower head was loose as usual. The place is dead after 5 pm. Make sure you take food. ( we had no car) also take a pack of cards. The place could do with some skylights to let light in.

Excellent facilities, location amazing, beautiful walks, lovely room
We stayed in room 10, the Granary, unfortunately the mattress was not very comfortable, especially on one side, could really do with supplying a new mattress, other than that, it was perfect

Sally in the Reception Office is an absolutely beautiful human- kind, welcoming, enthusiastic, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I spoke to her on the phone before our party arrived and she answered lots of questions and was equally brilliant when we arrived/stayed. The accommodation is lovely- very comfortable beds, pillows etc. Good bathroom facilities with toiletries provided, excellently equipped kitchen and lots of room. Really good value for money and beautiful location. Absolutely loved our 2 night stay and can't wait to return.
The only negative was the fact that a large family group were also staying and their behaviour (loud talk, children running around, doors slamming etc) until the early hours of our first night there showed that they either did not know how to behave when sharing accomodation, or did not care. The staff were very apologetic about it but it wasn't their fault- the family's many adults should have known better.

Perfect family room for 4, common kitchen with a big fridge to share and a big room with 2 big tables to eat. My daughter and I enjoyed the hot chocolate ( you have a kettle and a choice of hot chocolate or tea or coffee in the room). Beautiful garden and play area for the I ds both included in the price of the room.
Great staff, very helpful. Great location
Was just a bit disappointed by the opening times of the castle 12 to 4pm as we didn't then was able to visit as we arrived late the first night , then left early for a hike ( we did pillar mountain :thought but wonderful all the way) we were hoping to be back on time to visit as we were back at the car by 2.30 but sadly got a flat tyre so time it got sorted it was well past 4 and the next day we were leaving at first thought it opened at 9 so we could do it before leaving but as I checked I saw 12 and we had booked a mini cruise for 10.45 at Coniston.

The room was clean and comfortable and perfect for a family of four. The property was self-catering and the kitchen was well-equipped. We loved having access to the castle grounds, which are beautiful, and we enjoyed the bird of prey displays too.
The communal dining-room and lounge are a bit tired and lack atmosphere.

Nice location good parking
Stairs, cafe didn’t stay open long enough, falconry displays good but seating very low and uncomfortable especially for someone like me with arthritis

Property was in beautiful grounds room was presented well with towels and was clean.
Bathroom was in a state of disrepair, towel rail fell off, shower cubicle doors were hanging off. Paint peeling off. Staff at the cafe where we went for breakfast spent more time chatting than dealing with our order for breakfast. Which wasn’t cheap!!

We had a lovely stay at Muncaster castle. The accommodation was basic but had everything we needed for a family night away. Each and every member of staff we spoke with were amazing and friendly. We got free entry to all of the castle and activities as part of our stay. Tv with Netflix availability and WiFi for kids iPads when it was wet out. Would definitely stay again. The towels on the bed were made into animals which the kids adored. Free to roam the grounds all evening and use the park, we went for walks in the woods until 9.30pm. Bird shows and weapons practice excellent - staff amazing. Fallen in love with this place, so much history. Book purchased from shop for £5 re Muncaster history well worth a buy and a read. Loved it.
There were a few repairs in the bathroom and kitchen that needed doing - loose hot tap in bathroom, kitchen cupboards needed re painting and crack in bathroom walls. However this did not affect or ruin our stay.

Location is just magnificent, staff extremely friendly and polite.
We loved that there was a huge communal kitchen and large lounge area for everyone to use. All kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. Washing machine and iron board.
Was a bit chilly and we did not manage to get heaters working

This is a fantastic location and while it is self catering if you did have a group of family or friends it would be perfect as a venue as there is a big lounge and kitchen. As it was me and my mum went to the cafe in the courtyard for an excellent breakfast.
I booked a twin room but we actually got two connected rooms and a bathroom. It was lovely and had everything we needed.
It was also a lovely surprise to get wrist bands to go to the bird centre and to the gardens for free.
Nothing it was great

Beautiful location. The staff couldn't be more helpful in all areas of the castle. The grounds were stunning so much to see and do.
The castle cafe was perfect for breakfast once we'd checked out of our room.
The check out time of 10.30 am we particularly liked it allowed for a lie in and a early run around the 65 acres and to the beach before breakfast.
We visited the castle, watching the owl and falconry displays , took part in the archery, crossbow and hammer throwing then finishing the morning activities hungry at the sausage festival for lunch and a cool beer on the lawn.
We'd definitely stay again.
Absolutely nothing not to like.

2nd visit here. Location was stunning right next to Muncaster Castle. Our room (number 9) was huge. It is a family room, so it had a perfect size for ourselves and our dog. It has kitchenette, private bathroom and living room. We loved it. With your stay you have access to the owl and hawk centre and for a small fee you can entry the castle. We didn’t do it this time because dogs aren’t allowed inside the castle. Short walk (about 30 minutes) to the village of Ravenglass. We have dinner at the Pennington Hotel. Book a table to avoid disappointments.

No breakfast included so can't comment
The TV in our room did not work. The wire for the digi box did not reach the plug socket. There were children watching the TV in the community room so we were disappointed not to be able to watch TV in the evening.

We ate breakfast in the courtyard cafe which opened at 8.30am, very good & lovely staff.
Great being able to walk around the lovely castle grounds before & after public access.
The shower didn’t drain well so paddling in water whilst showering, reported it to staff on leaving so hopefully will get sorted for future guests.

We were expecting a shared bathroom, but it turned out the bathroom was just for our room. It was across the hall but had a clear sign that it was just for us, and to our knowledge it was not used by any other guests.
We were anxious about the kitchen and dining spaces being shared - especially during the busy school holidays - as our children are autistic, but we only saw one or two people in there and it was very quiet and clean. Everyone was respectful of another's belongings and space, and there were no issues at all.
Staff were absolutely lovely and I enjoyed chatting with them as they showed us around. Check in was very quick and easy. The parking was excellent - lots of space and right outside the door.
Mega bonus - we hadn't realised that entry to the castle grounds and activities were included in the booking, so the kids (and I!) were absolutely over the moon when they found out they could do some axe throwing. Staff in the activities area also went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, and they were impressively patient with our children!
We live a long drive away, but we will absolutely stay again if we're ever up this way. Thank you!
The only point for improvement would be the bunk beds. The mattresses on the top bunks align with the top of the safety rails, so our children were unable to sleep in the top bunks due to fears of them rolling off in the night. My husband slept on the top bunk and didn't sleep very well as he was afraid of falling off. We're an accident-prone family!

Workable tv and sink that empties.

The Coachman's Quarters is a gorgeous place to stay. Our room was clean and spacious, the bed was big and comfy, the tea tray was well stocked, and we could see an eagle and a vulture (in their aviaries) from our bedroom window.
If you like running there is a parkrun at Muncaster Castle every Saturday at 9am and it goes right past the Coachman's Quarters! We are big parkrun fans so this was a massive plus for us!
It's fantastic that you get free entry wristbands in the room so you can visit the stunning gardens and the hawl and owl centre during your trip. We saw the Sky Hawks flying display which was brilliant!
The only improvement I could suggest would be to send an email a day or two before to say where the key collection will be for checking in after the reception desk has closed. We figured it out easily when we arrived, but an email beforehand would have saved us worrying about it on the way over.
