Amazing

The staff were so welcoming and friendly, tea and breakfast were amazing! The room itself had the basics and that’s all we needed just somewhere to sleep! I would definitely return and cannot wait to see how they do the pub across the road. Thankyou!!

Decent pub with excellent staff.

Staff were excellent - attentive and efficient, and all jolly nice people. And the food was good indeed. Good choice of drink.

Room I stayed in was rather dated, (woodchip wallpaper, a rather knackered wardrobe and chair) The room was cold until the radiator was bled and hot water was slow to arrive, and when it did arrive it was at such low pressure that having a shower was a bit of an ordeal. It would have been nice to have more than one electric socket!

Simple room for a night

The area is lovely, we were able to walk around and enjoy the lake nearby and next day it was a short drive to start Scafell Pike hike.

It was a bit cold in the room. The carpet in the room was a bit dirty which didn’t really give a cozy feeling to the room. Breakfast was good. In the evening it was very loud because there was quiz night in the pub downstairs.

Amazing

Really cozy, great little inn with amazing food and even better pints (recommend the steak and ale pie). Fire kept the pub warm all night. Staff were really welcoming and friendly. Easy access to scarfell and great gable (picturesque 10 minute drive), would highly recommend!

Great ales, friendly staff, good size bedroom.

Can be a bit noisy if you wish to have a lie in since it’s a pub accommodation expect to hear people talking in other rooms / music from the bar. Very weak shower

Lovely Great Vale Hotel

Friendly atmosphere. Lovely breakfast. Great value for money, especially for New Years Eve.

Rooms were a bit small, but it's an old building. Could hear other guests coming and going on the stairs. Would prefer a king-size bed, but space wouldn't allow it.

Overnight stay after a longish walk .

Location is great , food wonderful, staff very helpful & friendly .

The bedroom & bathroom were very cold . General room decor was tired - curtains hanging off rails , only one bedside lamp . Fire alarm outside room on the corridor was in dis repair ( hanging off the wall )

Great 2 night stay, meals, beer superb .

All meals ie breakfast and evening meals were excellent. The homemade ales were excellent too, the location was superb great for climbing scafell pike.

Only the view from the room we had, and the shower wasn’t the best. The room was clean and tidy just wish the view could have been better especially where the hotel is located.

Room tiny, shower only a trickle, toilet cramped, bathroom almost inaccessible due to a 10inch step up, bed not on a base but homemade 3 x 2 studding with a board on top, so high had to stand on a bin! stuck in a musty smelling accommodation across the road, no clean cups daily, coffee/milk/tea etc not replenished, bin not emptied, no clean towels as don't enter room, bathroom paint peeling, shower grout mouldy/dirty, breakfast ok but minimal- extra £2 for hash brown!

Food and drink excellent and plentiful to satisfy the hungry hiker. Cleanliness good in the important aspects. Staff friendly. This is a walker's location so good to see muddy boots and dogs ok

The Strands Hotel thrives because of its location. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was an acceptable bar meal standard.

The rooms are very basic and a little ‘tired’ looking. The food was priced at a ‘gastro pub’ price point and didn’t meet that standard. The toilets in the bar area were very smelly - wafts of stale urine smell by the table nearest the door, which is unpleasant. We asked to move and luckily for us there was another table.

Love the place. Was there 8 years ago taking some work colleagues up Scafell and enjoyed as much this time as last.

Warm friendly atmosphere a quintessential English hostelry. Brilliant location. Great staff. Great food and drink. Oh the bed was quite comfy as well.

Perfect location, excellent food, lovely staff and cozy ambience

We absolutely loved our stay here. The staff were so friendly and helpful with fantastic service at the bar and no wait for food. We ate here both nights and were so impressed by the quality of the food. Everything we ordered was 10/10 from starters through to pudding. Our favourite was the chicken curry - it's the best pub curry we have ever had. We loved the live music, the ambience! The breakkie was brilliant and set us up for a walk, as did the packed lunch which was great! The location is perfect for Scafell but we also did some lovely local walks from the Strands which too. The room was comfortable and we'd love to come back.

The bathroom needs a bit of TLC but otherwise everything was brilliant.

Hidden jewel

Beautiful setting. Probably the best staff I have met and I travel a lot. The two young girls behind the bar were efficient and polite The lady that served breakfast was very accommodating and David the manager couldn’t do enough Evening meal was again excellent as was breakfast I will return for leisure purposes once I retire next year

We had an amazing experience! The place was absolutely fantastic, and the staff was top-notch. The young girl who checked us in and took care of us was so friendly, which made us feel right at home. The grill plate was delicious, and the portions were generous! Breakfast was tasty too, although I did miss the black pudding and hash brown in the full British breakfast. But overall, we left very happy!

Just returned from two nights at The Strands Hotel in Nether Wasdale, and I can confidently say it’s one of those rare gems where you instantly feel at home—if your home also happens to have a brewery attached (which, sadly, mine does not). The building itself oozes character—“character” in this case, meaning the kind of charmingly aged décor that makes you wonder how many generations of hikers have slumped happily into those armchairs. My room had the same cosy, lived-in feel, though the mattress seemed to have lived a little too much life. Imagine sleeping on a stack of cardboard boxes that had lost an argument with a trampoline—surprisingly supportive in places you didn’t need, and utterly absent in places you did. Still, nothing a pint (or three) from the in-house microbrewery couldn’t remedy. Speaking of which—the food was superb, and the beer equally so. Whoever thought of combining hearty pub grub with freshly brewed ales deserves a medal. Or, at the very least, another pint. The real stars, though, were the hosts and staff: warm, friendly, and welcoming, the sort of people who make you feel like a regular even if you’ve only just learned how to pronounce “Wasdale.” In summary: come for the food, stay for the beer, and prepare your back for a night of adventurous mattress archaeology. Would I go back? Absolutely—though I might smuggle in a mattress topper next time.

Great Weekend in the Lakes

Location was good for hiking options especially Scarfell Pike. Wastwater close for SUP and swimming. Local beers on offer were excellent and varied and the pies from the restaurant were the best ever 👌 Good breakfast selection as well

Amazing service

Staff were very friendly and helpful. There was saying mix up with out booking (my fault), which meant we only booked one night instead of the originally planned two nights. The staff were really understanding and even called ahead to another hotel to book us a room in advance, as they were fully.booked for the second night. Really amazing service.

Just lovely,if we're in the area in the future...and I'm sure we will be, we will pop in for a pint!

We booked a short 2 night stay for a couple of walks and some swimming. The location, staff, food and even the weather were absolutely superb. The Inn has a wonderful homely, wholesome feeling which we enjoyed so much.

The stay was what I expected to be fair, it wasn't expensive and that shows in the rooms themselves, they are tired and need a good make over. But I have no complaints because you get what you pay for.

Tom and team create a great atmosphere for a stay.

Really helpful, friendly staff, lovely setting, great food and exceptional beer. We really enjoyed chatting with people there - the informal atmosphere in the bar was so nice. And our chat with the brewer about the micro brewery was so interesting. And there is the weekend free bus to Ravenglass and Wasdale head which is amazing for walkers.
