No lifts We all said we disliked the restaurant decor lack of warmth , dreadful acoustics & breakfast buffet lukewarm . Apart from an English Breakfast no hot other choices v limited for the price .

A lovely stay

My room, view of the garden and lake, good breakfast, very comfortable bed and pillows, lots of hot water for a lovely bath.

Steak sandwich bar snack. Kind of gristle in a bap I had expected the interior to be a bit more in keeping with the exterior look of the building, but I got over it.

Bedrooms not cleaned properly

The bedrooms had not been cleaned properly (see below for details). The person at the front desk did everything she could to help us, was friendly, very professional - and gave us a complimentary drink and a discount on our stay because of what happened.

When we arrived in our first room, it was clear the room had not been cleaned properly. We asked for a different room - the second room was technically an upgrade, but this had not been cleaned properly either. In fact, it even had dead flies on the carpet. We were disappointed, so asked for a third room. Unbelievably, this room had also not been hoovered properly, but it was cleaner than the others. The person at the front of the desk organised for the room to be hoovered while we had a complimentary drink at the bar. The tables in the dinning room / breakfast area were also not clean - several tables still had crumbs or sticky marks from previous guests. They might have been short staffed that weekend, Im not sure, but overall we would not recommend staying here.

3 floor up no lift! Stud at reception 15 minutes on arrival at unmanned desk! Loft room too small, shower a nightmare being 6ft 3! Water pressure awful .No water fountain in hotel.Expensive for what it was.

Day to day running couldn’t be better but the bedrooms need renovating

Staff were excellent and exterior of the building were beautiful and was gutted that we didn’t pre book the pods by the lake

Considering the price paid for the night the condition of the room was underwhelming. For instance marks on the bath were mistaken for mould, few lady birds and other bugs flying around and in general could do with renovating

Sort out the lighting!

Good breakfast and attentive breakfast staff

The lighting in the bedroom (a "Privilege Room") was very poor. No bedside lights. Just oppressive overhead spotlights which were unpleasant even when dimmed. This is so easy to sort out! Just get some bedside lights.

Attic room with no view did not meet room expectations. Poor housekeeping, no mugs or spoons in room, only one comfortable chair, stains on carpet. Checked in 2 hours later than given time and room was not ready.

The hotel was spotless, the staff were incredibly helpful, friendly and attentive. Food was delicious, the breakfast hot and tasty, accommodating different dietary requirements. The location is stunning and we plan to return.

Mediocre, only saved by the experience we had with the receptionist. She needs to run the hotel.

The Latvian receptionist, I think she was called Solveiga, was excellent. Extremely upbeat, enthusiastic friendly and efficient. Checked us in and out. Very proud of her job. She could have done with help at check out as there were a lot of people checking out at the same time. I did notice another staff member in a suit saunter round reception to the office then back out who possibly could have helped with something but he walked off so presume he was the general manager as no help provided. The hotel overall was a lovely building and the breakfast for nice.

The room we were allocated 422 had an eggy smell. We should have asked to change rooms but I thought it might pass. On the second night my husband woke up at about 1pm as there was an awful sewage smell in the room. I woke up and smelt it too. I’m not sure if it was the drains, as the smell wasn’t worse in the bathroom, or the air conditioning unit with stagnant water in. We switched the a/c on and it cleared it but the a/c was very noisy. We did open the window open at one point on the Saturday but there was a wasp nest outside so wasps were coming in. We did let the receptionist know and she dealt with it very well. The breakfast staff need more organisation by a manager, second day we didn’t get asked about tea/coffee so had to get up and ask someone. A general comment that applies to most hotels I stipulated I was gluten free and gluten biscuits are left in the room. At breakfast no one asked if I needed help with ingredients abs still had to ask for toast which by the time I received it I’m not eating with my husband. Just could do with streamlining more.

Nice from the exterior, depressing and not clean inside

Not conveniently located to get off the motorway. My room was unbelievably dusty and dirty. Shower was poor and not high enough to accommodate me at a lofty 5’11. Glad I’m not tall. No wifi connection (if there was, there was certainly not a welcome folder with the details in) and then nobody asked how my stay was. So I couldn’t be bothered to let them know it was poor, as they didn’t seem to even care.

The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Room was on the small side and a little dated. The room was on the top floor and there was a continual background 'hum' coming from somewhere. During the 2 nights there was no Guinness available. Dinner was mediocre, my chosen dish was unavailable (chicken gnocchi), made do with the Dahl which unfortunately was very bland.

Excellent breakfast. Very good service. The dinner was also excellent.

I had tried to get a room with a walk in shower but this was not available in a standard room, I would have had a superior room but they are on an upper floor with no lift. My wife can't manage 50 stairs. Even access to the first floor was restricted due to the stair lift.

The best place we stayed at during our trip ( of 2 weeks in England )

Wonderful, non intrusive reception area. Very helpful reception person who helped take some bags up stairs. Absolutely loved the grounds in front of the building and the dining and lounge rooms. Having the exit time being 11am. Being provided good internet connections to allow me to chair a Zoom meeting in Adelaide - based in my bedroom in the Mercure .

Hostel not hotel

This is not a hotel I paid a 4 star for a hotel price which felt like a hostel. I couldn’t get through to reception and when I went there they were gone the room was damp and falling apart. I paid £180 and I feel scammed. I would like a full refund please.

It was falling apart dirty and was not pleasant. Damp and walls literally falling apart. I have been put of booking.com and mercure hotels. I don’t expect to pay this amount for a hostel setting.
