An old-fashioned concept of understated excellence

The very comfortable bed; the bidet in the bathroom (a rarity) was on its own worth coming to the Amigo for; we liked the traditional style of furnishing combined with modern comfort. The location is perfect, next to the Grand' Place. All staff were exceptionally nice and frequently offered to do more than asked, e.g. to post letters, book us a table in the hotel restaurant earlier than expected. Every time we ordered something from room service or in the bar there was always a little surprise-extra with it (biscuits, grapes, chocolate drops etc). We liked the relaxed, warm atmosphere and art-deco (Hemingway?) style of the hotel bar too; also, we much appreciated not having to check out before midday. The hotel's Bocconi restaurant was excellent in its own right and the bill was appropriate to its level.

The order form for in-room breakfast was difficult to complete correctly for 2 people wanting different things, which is probably why we didn't get exactly what we expected, although we enjoyed what came. We wished there had been facilities in our room for making tea (a water boiler and tea bags), not just coffee in a Nespresso machine; and were surprised to find no sachets or capsules of milk in the fridge, only powdered creamer. Food and coffee or hot chocolate ordered in the room were never very hot on arrival, though not actually cold. If there was a fitness centre, nobody told me.

The staff were exceptional as they were friendly and polite and super helpful.

The bathroom was good but when you showered it flooded the bathroom which wasn't helpful as it didn't drain quickly and meant you had a puddle of water on the floor.

The staff although pleasant in general refused to deal with Booking.com after they discovered that I had two reservations (a mistake since I only reserved one room). I was in a foreign land on a Saturday night without sufficient language skills to deal adequately a situation like this. Absolutely no help in resolving this issue.

Luxury, but you’re paying for it

Hotel was beautiful, rooms were great clean and turn down service was superb. My only fault was things were over the top expensive. They had small bottles of water in the room, they were 9 euro, I went a block away and got a large bottle of Evian for 2 euro. Drinks at the lobby bar were 25 euro, the bar a block away were 8.50 euro. Breakfast was 45 euro per person, right across the street, a great waffle and coffee were under 10 euro. I mean come on,really . Just a lil price gouging.
