Aque Cave is a truly special place that we will recommend to everyone and would happily return to. The staff were incredibly welcoming, kind and helpful, and every detail of the place felt carefully thought through. Everything was spotless, beautifully scented and exceptionally comfortable, especially the bed. The breakfast was wonderful too. We honestly couldn’t fault a thing. We only wished we had stayed longer than one night! If we ever return to Matera, we will definitely stay here again.

Everything. Fabulous room the bathroom was stunning. So clean and cool. Staff were so lovely and told us where to go for sites and food if we wanted. Breakfast was fabulous. Lots of food and selection.

The cave was renovated to a high quality whilst also being sympathetic to its original features, very beautiful place with fantastic attention to detail! Paola was also extremely helpful with giving us information on where to go and what to do with a brief history of Matera along with restaurant and bar recommendations which were really great. Highly recommend staying at Aque Cave for a real experience in the Sassi.

Short walk to town, friendly host
Staying in a cave is ok 1 night for novelty but room is not functional or comfortable. Dark room (cave, no windows), lacking furniture to put suitcases or set or hang things. Literally lived out of suitcases on the floor for 3 nights. Unless the weather is nice (3 nights of bad weather (cannot blame anyone!) for us you cannot enjoy any outdoor space here) breakfast is indoors. We were visiting late March. Matera can be enjoyed fully within 2 nights.
