The location on Sidmouth seafront is excellent - beautiful sea views and a short walk from Esplanade restaurants and bars. Close to the town centre, the hotel offers excellent access to all local activity. The welcome was great and the staff both friendly and helpful.
There was no warning given in the advertising material or during the booking process that the building offered little in the way of easy access for people with mobility issues. There are high steps and heavy doors at both main entrances making entry and access difficult and uneven floors with unexpected slopes and trip hazards throughout the building. Some basic work on the premises could alleviate this - and if that option is considered too difficult or too expensive then some warning in the information material so that customers know what to expect and can choose alternatives in necessary.

Brilliant location, right on the esplanade
Parking wasn’t easy

The young lady Sian on Reception was friendly, welcoming and professional. Hotel is in a fantastic location right on the seafront. My single room 24 had a fab sea view, which is unusual for a single room to get.
The hotel doesn’t have its own parking so the closest option is Bedford Lawn Car Park which is next to it. It’s an expensive car park - £15 for 24 hours. If you don’t mind walking about 8 minutes, the Manor Road Car Park (council run) is half the price.
A huge coach party of elderly people arrived on the same afternoon. They were incredibly noisy, continually going in and out of each other’s rooms, talking loudly in corridors, etc. This continued all afternoon and then started again at 7am the following morning. The hotel seems to have poor noise insulation.

- Warm, peaceful, and professionally-run
- Ideal central location
- Absolutely spotlessly clean
- Quiet, with a sense of privacy
- Decent TV channel selection
- Only four tiny milk pots for tea/coffee in the room is not enough for someone who likes a brew — a small jug of milk would have been lovely, even if it was out served on the landing

Parking extra if you cannot get one of the three parking spaces at the rear. I was lucky space on the road was free when I arrived.

All staff were incredibly helpful and pleasant.
Nothing really.

Everything was excellent. The staff were all wonderful, very welcoming and friendly, and helpful at all times. The room was great; very quiet, an excellent size with wonderful sea view and balcony. The breakfast was very good as was the evening meal which, although our original booking was for bed and breakfast, we were able to book on a daily basis after our arrival. To be able to have just one-course was wonderful and the food always delicious. We have already recommended the Bedford to several friends!
Nothing at all! One possible suggestion - a second hand-rail in the lovely shower would have perhaps been useful for the less mobile.....?

I was in Sidmouth for a retirement lunch and booked to stay overnight at The Bedford. My room ( 25 ) was at the front overlooking the sea. The noise of the waves breaking on the beach was very soporific and the sea air sleep inducing. The breakfast was fine and the staff friendly . What more could one ask for.
Nothing to report

Lovely view, nice staff, good foiud, very comfortable bed
Dining in the crowded bar. Bar could be better decorated with nicer furniture. Had to pay 3 days overnight parking in public carpark. Valet parking and the price included in the hotel pricing would be mote acceptable.

Breakfast was very good. Gluten free option for my wife was fine too. The location of the Hotel is superb. We very much enjoyed the sea view from all four windows. Our room was great! Staff were friendly and helpful.
Nothing that I can think of.

Good comfortable beds and a lovely walk-in shower. Good towels.
Really nice breakfast and friendly staff.
More storage needed in the bedrooms or at least case stands.
Our TV remote worked when it felt like it, we reported it the first morning but nothing was done.
We struggled with big heavy curtains which needed pull cords.

This is a special historical building and now very well looked after. There is an ambiance that is professional, helpful and friendly. Quiet room and the sound of waves
Perhaps have a free mineral water machine near reception for guests to refill bottles? Although then there would be more plastic actually in the water and plastic waste. However, I drank from my bedroom's tap and found it cool. Kettle/ tea etc is already available. I wore ear plugs, because of the waves crashing

Sea front location in a charming little seaside resort. Had a bedroom directly looking over the beech and sea.
Staff very friendly.

Friendly staff, good seafront location. Cooked breakfast always served really fast. Bedroom has all the tea/coffee/biscuit facilities. Clean and comfy bed, good shower etc. For single room it has a reasonable floor space, small but not tiny. Plenty of room to get round the bed etc, you don't feel cramped.
Nothing I didn't really like, it's an old building, so a bit of a rabbit warren, but nothing they can do about that. There's a very small lift, but I tended to use the stairs to free up that for those people who found the stairs (2 floors), and navigating the way, difficult.

Perfect location, beach across the road and town centre a few minutes walk
friendly staff. very helpful
Comfortable clean room , bar , restaurant.
Decor nice throughout .
Good choice of breakfast menu , and the ability to choose which items .
Dinner menu is good value and choice , can be booked on site .
Car parking across the road £15 / 24 hrs , bare that in mind if staying for a week, the car park operator was very helpful and reserved a space as it soon fills up .
The room we had , did not have a plug socket near a mirror to dry hair, not a major issue , just more thought into the layout .
If you have mobility issues request ground floor, although there is a lift , there are steps either way when exiting lift

Lovely situation, right opposite a lovely section of beach and close to restaurants and shops. Staff were very friendly, especially front desk, cleaners, and young lad at breakfast. Lots to choose from at breakfast, on the buffet and on the cooked options. Room was freshly decorated and extremely clean. The sea facing balcony was perfect. The beds were incredibly comfortable. Someone helped us get our bags from the room downstairs when we left so I could help my companion. Lovely seeing so many people swimming, jogging and cycling along the promenade/from our balcony. Fabulous evening meal at Myca's fish restaurant 'in town', and at The Marine pub just along from the hotel. We had a blue badge so could park easily on the double yellows for a short time or the disabled parking spots around town.
Unfortunately the lift was playing up which was a bit tricky as one member of our party was reliant on it. The staff tried their best but it meant them running up and down the stairs frequently. It was fixed the next day so very quickly but that's the reason for 9 instead of 10 on the facilities. My scrambled egg and smoked salmon seemed to have sat around for too long before being brought out. Room was quite hot and we kept the patio doors open at night - but the bonus was we got to hear the waves lapping which was fabulous. Would have been handy to have little reading lights, the above bed lights were very bright if one of you wants to sleep.

Situated on the esplanade, with some views out to sea and to the west, it is an old fashioned, comfortable hotel with 40 rooms. Ours was quite spacious. Good buffet breakfast.
Car parking! Very few slots in the free park behind the hotel. If you can’t find a space there, you must use the expensive town car park opposite.

Superb location. Receptionists helped bring in our luggage from the car park at the back of the property and again at the side when leaving despite the arrival of a coach! All staff were extremely pleasant. Good choice of breakfast both continental and cooked which was well prepared and presented on nice hot plates!
Nothing.

It all went well. the Staff are lovely and all so helpful. Food is lovely. Room is lovely and our balcony was amazing. We had the door open all night and could seen the moon on the water. One night it was the most amazing strawberry moon. We just lay in bed and enjoyed the view.
I needed to get my mobility rollator in and out and it would have been easier if both the double doors were left open instead of just one. But any staff nearby immediately helped me if they say me struggling. The hotel is listed so they cant have ramps put in but it would make a big difference if the entrance double doors were both kept open which widens the doorway.

Sea view. Dog friendly staff. Nice, segregated room for breakfast. Comfy bed. Small but adequate lift.
We did have a lady wanting to share the lift rather than waiting for it. Notice says not to share. I walked down to stop our dog being crammed in.
My mackerel for breakfast smelt awful & tasted bitter, so I couldn't eat it. Not offered other choice.
