Exceptional views in the most convenient location.

The breakfast was exceptionally good. A great, European style selection to start the day. The view from the room, directly overlooking the square and the Christmas market, was absolutely extraordinary. I believe only a couple of the superior rooms have this view, as our hallway had only a few doors in contrast the other main hallway. It was so worth booking these superior room. Extremely spacious and views beyond compare! :)

It was in an ideal place to visit the Christmas Markets and the Braisserie was very attractive.

Having to go through the self checkin procedure as we arrived on a Sunday. Also no tea making facilities in the rooms considering the price.

A lovely, enjoyable stay visiting the Christmas Market, virtually on the door step

Lovely old building, close to the centre of Basel. Quiet , relaxed atmosphere. Dining in the restaurant for an evening meal - good food, well presented by professional staff.

No tea making facilities in the room. There was tea, coffee available on each floor but stocks were not always replaced quickly enough.

Excellent location with curious features like an elevator to the old town

The location is superbe, right in the old town, sights like the town hall and the river Rhine in walking distance, restaurants and cafés, shopping street, a public transport stop right there as well and the best part - an elevator that runs from the hotel to the street level. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and the place is clean and quiet. The only thing I overlooked is that it is a former prison and once you know you see it in the layout. It's a curious vibe.

The restaurant is closed on Sundays (not untypical for Switzerland).

A treasure of a hotel in a beautiful city!

the restaurant serves a good continental breakfast and superb dinners. In fact, many evening diners were outsiders eating in which to my mind is an excellent recommendation! The hotel has a fascinating history which is worth going into if only to appreciate the stories the walls could tell! Its location in the old town is perfect for shopping, exploring (a must see is the nearby Tinguely fountains), cafes to sit and people-watch and for dining. We would return in a heartbeat especially after the warm welcome from the staff, not just on arrival but each time we passed by any one of them! A treasure of a hotel in a beautiful city!

Fabulous.

It was gorgeous, full of very comfortable character. Seeing the hotel when driving (by taxi) through one of the city gates was an amazing start. Odd as it sounds, until you do it, taking the lift from reception down to the city level - rather than puffing up the hill was not only fun but wonderful. The old city was right from the lift exit! And easy to walk most everywhere, although trams were all of one-hundred metres away. Wow.

A lovely stay at a beautiful, centrally locared hotel.

Location and quality of accommodation. Right in the centre of the old town which could get quite bust but the double glazing windows worked very well to block out any external noise. The staff were very friendly. The breakfast was very nice too.

The building was unique with an interesting history. The rooms have been set out with a lot of thought and cleaned well.

Unfortunately we had to leave before 7am and the lift to the outside was not available.

The hotel had real character and was in a perfect location for walking around the old town, for accessing the public transport and for an early morning swim in the Rhine. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was clean and comfy

Nice city location, plenty of shops and restaurant choices.

The location, the staff were great, room was comfy and large, the shower was hot and powerful. The breakfast was good, with buffet and choice of freshly made eggs. Arrived early and left our bags and on leaving was also allowed to leave them while we went for our last walk around the City.

There was no tea/coffee making facilities in our room which was disappointing. The TV reception was poor with limited UK broadcast except for news Chanel’s.

Enjoyable historical experience in Basel.

Very nice relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommended. Staff people were very friendly and kind. The location is near the center of the city but the entrance from the city side may be a bit confusing because it is small elevator on the bottom of high-up wall. Unique enough though.

Very pleasant

A big thank you to the front desk staff for their courteous checkin and to the breakfast service person (I wish I had her name) for going beyond to deliver an excellent level of service. I was working in my room from early morning and came down for breakfast too late. She was almost finished packing away the breakfast buffet, I asked if I could eat something quickly and she went the extra mile to get me anything I wanted with a smile. A great start to my day and such a pleasure to see people so happy to adapt despite it being my fault for arriving too late. Thanks so much!

A comfortable, calm, cosy atmosphere,in an ideal location with helpful friendly staff.

The location in the centre of town was excellent and the lift directly to the street was good. We liked the age and quirky features of the building. The information and Basel pass given to us on arrival and recommendations for restaurants ( as the hotel estate at was closed due to holidays) was excellent.

Day 2 we were disconcerted to find no breakfast buffet laid out. It was because we were the only guests! That is understandable, but it was a little off putting and took us a time to think of what we wanted. The staff served us very well with our requests, but a little warning would have been helpful.

A charming hotel in a converted historic building, steps away from many major museums and theaters.

The hotel is charming (an old monastery that later served as a prison), tucked away atop a hill in the center of the city. The rooms are relatively spacious and the facilities are extremely well-kept. Each room with a courtyard view has lovely decor and good light, with a en-suite bathroom that’s larger than usual for European hotels in historic buildings. The hotel has a very convenient elevator that takes guests down to street level for many nearby restaurants and shopping.

We were not impressed with the food or service at the onsite, high-end brasserie.
