Expectations not really met

For what you pay, the least you can expect is for the hotel to be nice, in a great location, and with very friendly staff. But that's not enough.

For a hotel like yours, it is essential to have an agreement with a nearby parking lot or a space where guests can park their cars and leave their luggage. I was given room 212 with the sink and mirror outside the bathroom, which I did not like at all. There is no privacy, and considering the price, having a full bathroom seems like the least you could offer. The room doesn't have convenient electrical outlets, for example near the bed (they're only underneath), and it doesn't have a Smart TV, which seems like the bare minimum in 2026. In addition, the staff was rushed during breakfast and never explained that there was a menu from which we could choose eggs or something else. The breakfast restaurant was always cold, the windows and doors are old so the cold comes in and you can hear the noise of the tram both at breakfast and in the room. At breakfast, coffee should be made at the bar and not provided by a coffee machine. The spa area doesn't really give you a sense of relaxation.

Excellent staff and a perfect location

The staff at check in were excellent they gave us all the info that we needed to get around Basel. The room was great with plenty of space. The location was in a perfect spot to get around. All in all a great Hotel. Would definitely stay there again.

Clean, friendly place in a great location with an excellent staff.

Location was excellent, room was clean, large, and well appointed. Restaurant was exceptional, and the entire staff was superb! We enjoyed it so much, we revised our itinerary from a one night stay to a three night stay! The coupons for free tram fair was a very pleasant surprise. If we return to Basel, we would stay there again.

Fabulous clean hotel, Great location and delicious breakfast selection.

Wonderful hotel in a perfect location. We loved the breakfast and the food choices . It was so easy to walk around and shop from this lovely hotel. We enjoyed sitting outside the bar area and relaxing with very delicious gin and tonics.

What a great trip to Basel and the perfectly Located Marthof Hotel

Our stay was very good, we had a very nice room, it was beautifully arranged and very comfortable beds. The breakfast was excellent and we could celebrate our special occasion with a glass of Prosecco at Breakfast with the organise juice. Well done to the Staff who went out of their way to be helpful.

Building work on the Marketplace in front of the Hotel, but that was not the fault of the hotel.

Beautiful Hotel in a great position in Basel!

The staff were really helpful and just so friendly. We had a lovely warm welcome when we arrived and told where we could find everything. We had asked about Wickelfische's and they advised we could borrow some from the hotel at no extra cost. The place was immaculate and had the best scent when you walked through the entrance.

There wasn't anything in particular that we didn't like. If i had to pick one thing it would be the heat in the room at night, with the window open it was quite noisy with the trams passing by.

Terrible, hot, unenjoyable!

Location

The air condition was weak. When asked the front desk, they said the government regulated the temperature. However, friends at other hotels said their A/C was great. Also, the retail stores had great, cold A/C. So, the front desk used the government regulation reason to cover up the real reason their A/C was not working good. There were several rooms on our floor, 4th floor, that had children running around and screaming at 10:30 pm. We had to go down to the front desk to let them know. The entire stay at the hotel was a disaster!

We had a pleasant stay. Staff were very welcoming. The room was comfortable and soacious.

The gym was well equipped and spacious. I especially enjoyed the “spa water”. We were able to enjoy the public lounge area on a hit afternoon while waiting to board a river cruise, which was much appreciated.

The breakfast was expensive, especially for guests traveling from North America.

Magical escape at Marthof

What is not to like! We loved the kind welcome from staff on arrival. The staff were attentive and available to help with anything we needed throughout our 9 day stay. We enjoyed the breakfast especially the porridge and fresh omelette options. A good addition would be more pastries rather than just bread, rolls and croissants. The room was a great size with great bathroom and amazing rain shower. The towels were fluffy and products supplied were divine. The free mini bar with a section of drinks and snacks replenished daily was a welcome treat in the afternoons! Having arrived in the middle of a heat wave we knew air conditioning may not be enough (Swiss have strict govt laws for sustainable air conditioning systems throughout the country) but the front desk supplied a fan which got us through the peak days perfectly. We loved the terrace bar and visited it throughout our stay. The location was great for walking and also for accessing trams. The free trams card gifted at the start of our stay meant we travelled free everywhere although we had prepurchased 7 day passes prior to arriving at the hotel which cost 50chf each - so would have been good to know this before arriving. We loved our gifted chocolate blocks on checkout. I had several friends (4 bookings) also book and we all loved staying here whilst our sons performed in the 2025 Basel tattoo. The staff were exceptional from reception, to bar, to breakfast and room attendance. The position of the hotel is The Best in Basel. Bathroom ,bed and linen were exceptional. The best luxury away from home for a week in an amazing town of art, shopping, history and food. The rooftop is a must.

Perfectly located hotel combining tradition with modern comfort.

Perfectly located hotel in the heart of Basel and a stone's throw from the river. The hotel has been recently refurbished, bringing modern comfort to its traditional core. Very nice restaurant/breakfast area with a great selection of dishes for the start of the day. Rooftop bar provides a tranquil spot away from the noise of the city.

Shame that it is not possible to order drinks at the roof top bar and that you have to order them downstairs.

The location was perfectly situated in Markt Platz next to a tram stop, a wonderful tea room and excellent restaurants. The room was large, clean and nicely appointed. We enjoyed the sauna, steam room and fitness room as a nice bonus.
