The warm and friendly welcome
The history
It just wasn’t our kind of place, should have read the reviews before booking. Quirky is an understatement! The bed was so uncomfortable, I slept very badly. We wouldn’t stay again.

Fantastic building overflowing with history and a wealth of character. Owner Patricia very friendly and welcoming, couldn’t fault her attentiveness. Very close to the beach and an area with lots of restaurants - great location. Medieval feel with a lovely spread of local produce for breakfast. Overall an amazing place to stay.
Not a hotel as described, definitely a B&B. Master bed in need of a new mattress, not much sleep had by myself and my 6ft 4 husband due to this. No facility to lock the rooms so open to anyone wandering in overnight or whilst we were out. Easily fixed though then this would have been a perfect stay.

An amazing place, packed full of interesting objects, antiques and artworks. Beds were super comfortable and the chateau was very clean. Patricia was a great host. If you want a boring budget hotel don’t stay here. If you want a true French experience I highly recommend.

We were greeted by Patricia who was a wonderful host, she was very helpful and polite and nothing was too much trouble. It’s a very quirky place to stay with lots of history. The only down side for me personally was the room did not have a TV (I like to go to sleep with background noise) but it wasn’t a deal breaker. Breakfast was a mixture of breads, jams/preserves, yogurt’s, fruit, cake’s, coffee, tea and fresh orange, and was ample.
If you’re looking for something quirky rather than your Ibis, Travel lodge you definitely need to book this place. Would I stay there again? YES MOST DEFINITELY!!’
Thank you Patricia 😘

This property is an experience. It is a history lesson in a house. There are all sorts of amazing antiques and its storied history is excitedly conveyed to you by Patricia, who is the ultimate host. Patricia clearly loves what she does and her friendly demeanour instantly makes you feel like you’re at home. I was in St Malo for work, so we requested an early check out. Even though we had a very early departure time, Patricia woke at dawn to put on a wonderful breakfast for us. This was truly a highlight. Thank you, Patricia
No complaints. Everything was lovely

On reading the previous reviews we had a good idea what to expect.
We were a family of 4 with a 2 year old and we’re welcomed by Patricia the owner and instructed clearly on the facilities available to us and some of the history.
Nothing was too much trouble.
If you’re looking for something completely out of the ordinary then this is the place for you.
We shall return for longer next time. This was an overnight stop before catching the ferry the following morning.
Before we left we were treated to a superb breakfast of eggs, croissants, bread, crepes, cake, jams and yoghurts. Fresh orange juice, choice of teas and lovely coffee. A feast.
Thank you for a memorable stay Patricia 👍

Rustic with full of history and an absolutely wonderful Lady of the House (Host). Everything was absolutely comfortable and totally local feel. You won't get such experience stay in modern hotels. It's a no brainer for return stay whenever we were to return here for visit. For the cost, it's the best.
Just the wifi was limited range due to the stone walls.

Excellent breakfast, eccentric set up, cross between antique shop and flea market. Charming and helpful owner. A family could sleep six, but probably 4 friends only, like us.. plumbing antiquated. Difficulty finding but handy for ferry.
More modern shower and/or bath

The hostess, Patricia, was very warm and welcoming. She is a history buff and a font of knowledge about local history. In addition, she had terrific suggestions as to what to do in Saint-Malo to make the most of our very short time there. Her insights were bang on, and we had the best time ever discovering the beauty of Saint Malo. The property at Domaine de la Bastille is huge, and the house was decorated with an eclectic mix of treasures from days gone by. We called our night here "Night at the Museum" because everywhere we set our eyes, there was something incredible to behold. We slept in comfy beds made up beautifully, and woke up to the sound of song birds singing in the woods on the property. How delightful!
Staying at Domaine de la Bastille was an unforgettable experience for us all. We will definitely recommend to our friends and family to visit Saint-Malo, and to stay at Domaine de la Bastille.

Patricia is a charming, very welcoming host.
Excellent breakfast.
Lots of quirky French character, quite unique. I have never stayed anywhere like it before.
The beds were clean and comfortable.
Definitely worth staying for a night.
Convenient for the ferry port.
We could not find Patricia for 30 minutes after arrival and the building was locked. The phone went to an answer phone.
The nature of,the building which is full of artifacts is difficult to keep clean to a good modern hotel
standard.
The garden is untidy.

The eccentric curios were great and the rooms were beautifully decorated. Patricia our host was very friendly and helpful in suggesting places to eat and visit. Reasonably easy to get a bus into the centre of St Malo.
Unfortunately there were no locks on the bedroom doors and the double bed of the family room was quite soft so we didn’t sleep very well. Quite cramped in the bathroom for using the shower. The exterior is a bit unkempt.

Patricia was an excellent host and so helpful and welcoming. The property is very Unique and 5 of us very much enjoyed the accommodation and decor.
We loved the property.
A little difficult to find at night when we arrived. However Patricia was so helpful and guided us to the access.

We loved Patricia and her welcome although as our French is mediocre, we could not understand everything she said.
She has a very historic and quirky property and we loved seeing all the rooms and learning about the property.
We enjoyed a private dining room for breakfast which Patricia made very special.
It was incredibly difficult to find- we went round and round for ages and even when we found the right turning it was not obvious which property was hers.
Whilst we loved the rooms, the mattresses were so uncomfortable and sunk in the middle - there was no support in any of them.
A suggestion would be to have a sign in the room for Wi-Fi.

The property is amazing. A small chateau with an amazing amount of art (some originals and lots of prints) as well as a suit of armour and other interesting paraphernalia. The breakfast was a really nice French continental breakfast.
The toilet was just outside the suite of rooms. However this is just part of the quirkiness of the place and the toilet is not shared with any other guests.

it was rather quirky and perhaps a little creepy!

Patricia’s house is like a museum and an antique shop. It’s very fun and she walks you through every inch of it explaining everything. She is such a kind and helpful host
The bed was really comfortable and we slept amazing. Also, gorgeous garden views

Very traditional building with many interesting artefacts. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower also worked very well. Our hostess, Patricia, was very kind, attentive and helpful in all respects, and we were offered an extensive full continental breakfast in the morning. The place was very dog friendly

Wonderful, quirky house, really unique. Patricia is lovely, very welcoming and nothing too much trouble. Very special place to stay. If you are looking for originality, eccentric but incredible decor, then this place is perfect for you.
My daughter has autism and it was a sensory overload for her. It was my fault for not considering this when I booked, but if you like clean modern lines, then this place isn't for you.

the bedroom had beautiful decor & an attentive host
the outside areas, front and back where extremely unkept, very ramshackled with ‘people’ living in run down buildings in the garden.
the downstairs smelt musty.
there was no way of locking your bedroom.
there was not a proper shower
the bed was too small.
initially the breakfast only consisted of cakes, cheese was produced upon request. the bread was stale.

lovely quiet property and a very nice hostess who made us particularly welcome …very oldie worldly
it smells very musky but it is very old

This place has a huge amount of charm and character. The hostess is very friendly and takes you around the property to explain everything. My room was in the oldest part of the building which is medieval, two rooms separated by a small antechamber, one with an ensuite bathroom. Lots of space, beautifully furnished and very comfortable bed. The sitting/breakfast room is downstairs - draped with medieval banners and lots of old and interesting pictures on the walls. A suit of armour in the hall. A real sense of stepping back in time. There is a courtyard outside the main building where you can go sit in the sun and relax. Lots of chess boards everywhere if you fancy a game. Huge amounts of choice at breakfast to get you on your way the following day.
The main door into the bedrooms didn't appear to have a lock although not really an issue. It's so separate from the other room in the main building.

The host, Patricia was lovely, warm and friendly. The house was full of history and character. It was like staying in a museum. The breakfast was very good. Beds very comfortable.
Hard to find the location until the host told us to put Forest Games into Google Maps. The house
was a bit cold but Patricia lit a real fire which was lovely.

The character and the history of the accommodation was stunning. It was very literally like staying for your very own 'Night at the Museum'! Our son (20), and daughter (14), absolutely loved the place.
The spread for breakfast was a sight to behold, we only wished that we had longer to sit and feast on the delights presented to us by Patricia. And that brings us to the single biggest 'stand-out' of our short stay, the host was the loveliest person, very helpful, very kind, and bags of fun, playing up to the 'haunted house' feel that attracted us to stay in the first place. (pictured) What an experience!
