The pub and the village are lovely
We stayed in The Smithy
Shower was disgusting, it was filthy
TV in the room didn't work
Coffee in the room in a jar was ground coffee, not instant but there is no coffee machine to use, tea bags were vile,
Room was really noisy with overhead noise from other residents,
It didn't help that a dump truck arrived at 6am outside the room I know that not the pubs fault but after a sleepless night it was not ideal.
Breakfast was disappointing with overcooked dry scrambled eggs and inedible hard sour bread toast

The pub itself and the location are beautiful and the staff were fantastic
The room was very very small, and there was nowhere to store clothes—no cupboards or drawers—so we had to live out of our suitcase for three nights. There are a few wall hooks for coats. The bathroom floor and the shower floor tiles and the wooden toilet were also a bit grubby, which took the shine off the stay

The staff were so lovely and friendly… the breakfast was delicious as well. Lovely pub with rooms and great local walks.. just a short walk from the Farmers dog.
The room didn’t have any storage, not even on the bedside tables, there was just a hook on the wall … it didn’t bother us too much,, but a small wardrobe and bedside drawers would have been nice.

It’s charm, location and staff
Tiny room, no daily milk so could not make a cup of tea or coffee. Ran out of sausages at breakfast which did not bother me too much as on first day the sausage was tasteless

It looks ok from the outside. But as the saying goes, you can roll it in glitter… but it’s what’s inside that counts… or stinks in this case!
There isn’t much around the property so either plan have a designated driver or accept the fact you are trapped on site. Bit of a red flag when you walk through the front door and you hear the receptionist breaching data protection rules and confirming the names of people who had or had not checking into the hotel as some people who had no booking reference but they gave out about a dozen names which were searched and commented on by the front desk. Clearly either the staff are not trained properly on data protection rules or it’s not enforced, either way it was shocking to see how easy it was for these people who had just walked in ahead of us find out so much about the names of people staying that night. For us, things started badly when overcharged at check in by £40 because apparently their system often over charges people. Thankfully had booking confirmation handy so able to get money back… but they didn’t make it easy. £40 to check in early seems excessive compared to other hoteliers and given it’s a 3 star hotel … no idea how it’s 3 stars.. wouldn’t give it any! They sell the “hotel” as having an ev charger, and they control access to it - it’s not free and isn’t discounted and you have to request access to it before you arrive. Although they don’t guarantee you will have access to it, the bare minimum would be the ensure that the spaces around the ev charger are kept for ev vehicles… but they don’t do that. So even if the charger is available, ifs a non-ev vehicle is parked there, they do nothing. When asked for assistance, staff were rude and dismissive. Inside the hotel it’s dated and tatty, pictures missing off walls, wall paper ripped and smells damp. Fire doors propped open with rat traps, signs to find rooms a joke. We had such a long walk from reception to our room we could have taken a packed lunch!

We had 3 rooms for 3 couples. Lovely bedding and very comfy beds. A great location and we strolled the short walk to the Farmers Dog for lunch. In the evening we had drinks and small plates at the Three Horseshoes which was really great. Lovely staff, good food, a fantastic breakfast and what’s not to like !
Great location and very good staff

The accommodation beautiful.

Location and building great as were the staff.
Food wasn't so great. We booked a meal at pm, as we couldn't get in Clarkson's pub. I wish we hadn't bothered. Food was bland and uninspiring and tasted nothing like its elaborate description. Staff couldn't do enough but would eat here again
Our room was very, very small. There is no room for a case. I get it's an old building, but a declutter may have helped. Or maybe warn people.

The staff were delightful and the location was superb.
For the price paid I’d expect a wardrobe and warning that our bedroom backed on to the busy noisy pub garden. It wasn’t horrendous but I would have appreciated warning before spending so much.

A lovely property - We enjoyed the renovated decor and the quality of the bed, bedding and bath products, as well as the attitude of the staff later in the day. Very nice garden with food and drink service. Manager was very helpful when I needed a page printed out. The breakfast on the 1st morning was well-executed and delicious.
Niggling faults of service, which I flagged in a private email to the manager but to which I hadn't received a response after 3 days. The day of checkout, they sent an email with the following: "If you enjoyed your stay and would like to tell others about it, we would be really grateful if you could leave us a review on Trip Advisor. However, if there is anything you believe we could have done better please contact us directly". What is the point of sending a private email if one doesn't receive a response?
1. We were awakened by staff around 7:30am every morning of our 3-day stay in "Groom". The doors to both the adjoining room and the one leading outside were slammed and there was loud movement of objects and voices outside our window. On the final morning, the smoke alarm went off right above our heads--perhaps correlated with the 3 people smoking cigarettes just outside?!
2. The breakfast on the 2nd day reflected neither the menu nor the breakfast on the 1st day: the eggs were overcooked; the avocado was cut differently and prepared without seasoning; the bread was regular white bread vs sourdough bread. There was no explanation nor acknowledgment.
3. The staff on Saturday morning, before the arrival of the manager around 12pm, were friendly but unprofessional. They cleaned around us while we sat at our breakfast table, sweeping the floor and clattering the plates and cutlery as they set the tables for lunch, but neglecting to clear up the pile of dirty dishes on the table that had been vacated opposite us long before. The servers regularly called across the room to each other; the young man burped and swore more than once.

Superb location, such a stunning area and surroundings! We absolutely loved our room and en suite and the breakfast the next day was fab! We can’t wait to come to the Costwold area next year and stay here again for longer. Thank you all.

We booked a deluxe double room and found the room had a large bed but no chairs and little space around it. No mobile phone signal and wi-fi required you to sign in with a portal collecting personal details rather than providing a password access. Far worse: there was a strong drains smell on entering the room. The staff said all other rooms were booked and they could provide a perfume diffuser. They returned with a candle and an air-freshener spray. We opted to leave at once and stay elsewhere. We had booked room and dinner to celebrate a special anniversary and the whole experience spoiled our evening: we had to search for alternative accommodation at the end of a day's travel. (The wonderful Howard Arms at Ilmington came to our rescue with a much better room for much less money.) The room at the Three Horseshoes was prepaid and they verbally offered a full refund but would not give us written confirmation. The refund was then slow to materialise and required email and phone calls to both the property and Booking.com to effect though we are unclear which company caused this problem. It did eventually result in a refund.
