Comfy hotel in a great location

Comfy room with some lovely complimentary bits. Friendly and helpful staff who had to deal with a fire alarm going off one evening with a pub full of people and hotel guests. Fantastic location for the city centre.

the breakfast was probably the best we have had on our travels this year to bath spa, st ives, exeter and liverpool ,the staff were very helpful and well mannered , the boutique double room with bathroom was excellent..

Check in / out was seamless There are snacks and mini bar which you have to pay for on checkout. Gives you choice of not going to the bar or when the bar is closed.

Loft room. No lift. So, if you have heavy suitcase you will struggle. I had to walk several steps to get the top floor (Loft apartment) with my suitcase and a laptop bag. No staff at night after 11pm. This wasn't clear on the website during booking although the staff member was nice and explained everything to me and reassured me they have hardly had any incident requiring emergency staff attendance.

Great hotel, good location, rooms and brekkie :-)

Rooms were lovely and we had rooms with baths which were requested on booking, so that was good. Really comfortable beds too. Pub was nice and great location in the middle of everything, and parking was literally just over the road. We didn't use the garden but had a look out there, and can imagine it being lovely in the summer. Breakfast was really nice as were the staff, and Mike was very accommodating.

Excellent and cosy!

The staff were so friendly when checking in! Especially the gentleman who was running the bar, checking people in and working the restaurant too! Me and my partner really enjoyed that it was part of a pub, we went down for a drink and it was lovely autumn vibe. The rooms were very spacious and the bed was so big and comfy

The tv only had limited channels - although this didn't really matter to us as we played cards in the pub downstairs anyway

A real 4-star hotel

We were welcomed by a guy very kind. Rooms were cosy, well equipped, spacious enough. We had a good dinner in an elegant and calm dining room. There is also a big pub area. The price is honest.

The hotel hasn't a parking and not even an area for loading and unloading luggage, there is a big paid parking nearby but it has been hard reach it because of the trafic.

Best place to stay in Exeter

Everything about this place is fantastic. The staff, the rooms, the facilities! The outdoor courtyard is wonderful. The rooms are comfy, a little luxurious and beautifully decorated. I have travelled a lot with work and this is the best place to stay in Exeter.

Disappointing. Will Not Return

The location was good and interactions with the staff were pleasant. Glad to have air conditioning.

The room felt very tired and clearly needs updating and a deep clean. It’s disappointing to read past reviews after leaving and seeing that issues we experienced have been raised several times over the last few years. There was mould in the bathroom, on the ceiling, in the grouting of the floor tiles, and in the shower grouting and shower tray. This was coming off in flakes as we showered so it was clear there hadn’t been any attempts to clean it. The grouting for the floor tiles marked the bath mat, again showing it could be cleaned but clearly hadn’t been. There were two large cracks in the bathroom ceiling over the shower. The carpet in the bedroom was stained, and the pillows were lumpy. The mattress was comfortable but the duvet was lumpy/very thin in parts. The room felt very small and was difficult to move around freely due to the size. One of the glasses left for us to use had a lipstick stain on it. I only realised this after taking a sip of water from the glass. I left the glass out to be changed and found that it had just been put back on the desk later in the day, still with a lipstick stain. We had quite a lot of difficulty getting the TV to work but eventually managed this. There was construction outside the bedroom window so this made for a noisy morning for some days of our stay. Other guests were quite noisy returning to their rooms later in the evening (the hotel hosts weddings and other events at times), and leaving early in the morning, which while not the hotel’s fault, didn’t help us have a restful and comfortable stay. I personally wouldn’t stay again and would say this was one of my worst hotel experiences. For the price paid, I was disgusted with the condition of the bathroom and was looking for alternative accommodation from the first night of our stay. Unfortunately, as we were staying for more than a few days, there was nothing suitable available.

Good atmosphere and facilities

City Gate is a lovely mix between pub and hotel, essentially a pub with rooms. good atmosphere and breakfast in the conservatory area was a nice change from a standard hotel dining room. The fridge with real milk and tuck offerings, both free and for sale were a great addition. Bathroom was spacious and good.

There is a pump noise every few minutes, we think related to the AC in each room. Not a problem but it did catch our attention. Probably better to have AC than not, it was a very warm weekend!

Great Hotel. Good Location. Overlooked small details

Very fair price for good quality accommodation. Well appointed and maintained. Nice ambience in room, and for me, one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in at a Hotel. Excellent Staff, attentive without being "fussy". Great location close to City Centre, but very quiet despite being above a Pub. Would have scored a 9 if (at least) a light Breakfast had been included...seemed "mean" not to include Cereal, Toast & Drink.

As above, not even a light Breakfast included. Only other quibble-no one explained all electric fittings were switched off in room at the sockets-including the TV. Once I had worked this out, the TV & Sky Box had to reboot...But no "help sheet " in room to tell you how to do this...

Beautiful room--with superb aircon to keep fresh during the heatwave. Lots of resources in the room when thirsty or hungry. Exceptional humungous bathroom. Exceptional central location. Cosy hotel, full of interest. Lovely staff, especially at reception.

For my tastes, the bed was a bit hard.
