My mum and I stayed here from January 23rd – 26th, 2026, for a much-needed girls' getaway. As Scotland’s first and only independent spa to achieve the prestigious Five Bubble Luxury rating, my expectations were high. As someone who visits a lot of spas and values wellness rituals, I can say this was an exceptional experience!
Lovely Bubbly Parts
Incredible Service & Staff: The staff were the absolute highlight of our trip. Unlike most spas that just give you a towel and point to the door, we were given a detailed, personal tour. It was so helpful to know the benefits of each room and how warm they get—perfect for first-timers or anyone wanting to maximize their visit.
The New OAK Restaurant: On Saturday evening, we tried the brand-new OAK restaurant. It’s beautifully themed with plants, wood accents, and a warm log burner that creates a cosy, homely feel. The food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, and the staff were once again incredibly helpful with recommendations.
Special Afternoon Tea: We had our tea in the spa café in a quiet, calm setting—all while wearing our robes! They have amazing tea menus where you can actually open and smell the leaves before choosing. We upgraded to the Champagne Afternoon Tea for £46 per person, which was a lovely treat.
A Personal Touch: We even met the Director, Matthew, as we were leaving the spa. He was so friendly and down-to-earth; when he asked how our stay was, my only reply was: "Can I move in?!"
The Award-Winning Spa (£50pp for 2 hours): Totally worth it. The water beds in the quiet area were a dream for a quick nap, and the infrared sauna was my absolute favourite.
Top-Tier Changing Rooms: The changing rooms (near the spa café) are fantastic. They feature the best power shower I have ever had, plus top-of-the-range GHD hairdryers and straighteners.
The "Wow" Room Upgrade: We were upgraded to a Family Suite, which was huge!
(sorry, but honest)
Hydration Costs: There is no water fountain in the spa. You have to purchase bottled water at the bar for £3.25, which adds up when you're rehydrating after the sauna.
Room Location: Our suite was right next to the lift and the maids' towel room, so we heard some noise during the night and early mornings.
Out of Order Facilities: The ice plunge pool was down for maintenance during our stay, which was a shame as we were keen to try it.
Basic Breakfast: The food was hot and filling, but the variety was a bit limited—likely because it was a quiet period.
The Verdict: The staff were the #1 highlight, followed closely by the incredible spa and the new OAK restaurant. Even with the hotel undergoing a fantastic renovation, the experience was wonderful. We’ll definitely be back—and we'll be taking the bus again!

Nice big room and bed. Breakfast very nice also. Staff very friendly.
It looked like urine marks on the toilet seat around the areas where the toilet seat is connected to the toilet bowl. Creaky floorboards, but expected in an old building. These aren't complaints, by the way.

Had been decorated beautifully
A spa hotel. I expected a POOL. Not £50 extra for 2 hours to use it. It was expensive we could have stayed somewhere for half the price. B&B because that’s all it was. Plus Sunday night it was empty and very boring. TV in the room was all of 12”. I had just finished cancer treatment and thought a Spa hotel would be perfect. But cried it was so disappointing

All the staff where friendly & approachable breakfast was very high quality. The rooms where also.very spacious despite being a solo traveller my room had a large Dbl & a Sngl bed inside, also a jacuzzi bath in the bathroom with a TV at the bottom end of the bath.
I didnt notice until after I'd booked and paid that despite being advertised as a Spa hotel that access to the Spa wasn't included within the cost of the room and that an additional charge of £50 for 2hrs Spa access was required this was somewhat alleviated by the jacuzzi being within the room.

Staff was friendly and good location
Toilet cistern ran constantly after some fiddling in the middle of the night managed to get it silenced , bed had quite a few long hairs which I had to pick off and shower pipe leaked excessive water when showering and no shelf to put any shower gel or shampoo

We arrived early and the receptionist let us have the room early. We were offered the opportunity to book a table for breakfast and evening dinner.
Room was 15 degrees C on entry - very cold indeed as it was 8 degrees C outside on the day of arrival. There was an electronic thermostat in the room that didn't work, and we had to contact the reception to request that the heating was turned on. We then decided to have lunch in the hotel, but the restaurant staff told us that it would be at least half an hour before they could take our order as the Spa restaurant next door was busy.

It was clean
Room size, dated rooms and they were also very dark. Reception was very modern but rooms look neglected.

Outstanding staff — especially Kevin and Lewis, who were professional, kind, and clear throughout. The place was beautifully decorated, comfortable, and welcoming. The food was fantastic, and the whole experience left me blown away. Highly recommend!

Lovely staff & hotel. The spa was wonderful!
Breakfast hours were the same time as our spa hours 8am- 10am. Breakfast remained open until 11am after I had asked, but checkout was also at 11am so we had no time to get sorted for our day.

The place is lovely Dumfries
Staff in hotel lovely
The room wasn't what I booked
I complained and when I said that it was the correct room offered to move when we were going out
Then there was a leak in the room and neither the man or reception or owner were bothered at all
My bag was ruined totally ignored this
I was given after 8 days a refund which was a small fraction of payment
After I made sure I'd followed up
We will not be staying there again and a much needed break was ruined
The owner had to be emailed and contacted over 7 times before it was sorted .

All of the staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful and efficient, There is a varied range of restaurants, bars and facilities.
The hotel is old fashioned and comf0rtable, which we liked.
Our room was quite small, a bit short of space, although quite comfortable. Altogether including the cost of the stay it was very much over-priced.

Location was excellent and you can see there is refurbishment ongoing, and this is greatly needed.
Room was outdated and basic. It was not value for money

No saving grace. The spa may be rated ‘5 star’ but the hotel was 3 star at best and in dire need of renovation throughout.
The room was cramped, dated and right next to the busy and noisy staircase. Guests noisily used them until 2am, often at the top of their voices! Doors and walls paper thin, then at 6am a mechanical noise started up directly outside our 1st floor window! The 3 restaurants were fully booked for private events, to the exclusion of all other guests. I had to negotiate a 5pm seating, otherwise reception had no food suggestions and it was pouring rain outside. We were meant to stay 2 nights but checked out a day early after a disastrous night’s attempted sleep. The Manager suggested we could move to a much quieter room, to which I asked why they had not placed us there in the first place?! Done with this experience, we made other arrangements, forgoing one night’s paid accommodation.

After we complained about the atrocious condition of the first room they put us in, they reluctantly moved us. The second room was a great improvement but honestly I was so angry at the disrespect shown to us l still don't think anyone should be assigned to that room. Not till it's cleaned and redecorated. I travel a great deal. Three countries this year. I think this was probably the most disappointing hotel I've stayed at in years.
So frankly nothing to like
See above. The first room looked as though it hadn't been redecorated since 1980. The carpet was dirty and sticky. Side table was broken. Water stains around the window Heat didn't work. For heavens sake there was an antique pants press circa 1970 For the price I expected better. Definitely will not recommend to anyone.

The main reception area and the restaurant area is lovely with the spa. The breakfast was really nice and staff were really friendly from the cleaning staff to bar and restaurant staff.
We had booked 2 rooms at the cairndale for the purpose of a family get together to celebrate our children joint 18th
and 21st at a local restaurant. We were allocated room 53 double room in the old part of the hotel.
The room smelt of mould and the windows had been opened to difuse the odour which left the room freezing. On entering the bathroom we noticed that 1 of the towels was stained. The bathroom was very outdated with plywood covering the bath panel and above toilet to cover where tiles had been removed. You couldnt put your clothes in the wardrobe due to the smell. We were then awoken with the noise of other residents underneath as we were above an exit tunnel at the hotel where guests congregated awaiting to go home as next to a function room so very noisy. To top it all off we had a leak in the room which started in the early hrs of the morning. The water bounced of the carpet keeping us awake all night.
Our children were in the main hotel and there room was fine but ours was not fit for purpose. As avid travellers we have stayed in alot of hotels all around the world and the room we were offered via booking.com was an absolute disgrace.
To conclude it really spoiled our stay at the hotel.

I believe the cost paid to stay at the hotel is sufficient to include use of spa.I was extremely disappointed it did not and for this reason i would not recommend staying here to friends or family.

Staff were helpful
Double room was very small and bed was like 4ft bed. To small for comfortable sleep, had to request a move. Room interior was very dated compared to lobby and hallways.
Unable to use pool facilities unless you pay £50pp for 2 hours in spa. no guest rate.

The spa is nice but very expensive
Our room was very small , no ventilation in bathroom , very noisy outside could not sleep until 2am then wakened at 3am by staff on the balcony having their break .
For £150 for bed only was expensive for the accommodation although the hotel has had a recent refurb not all the rooms have been finished or up graded

Spa excellent. Staff very nice and helpful
Room very grim and tired and seriously in need of refurbishment. Too basic for the price. More attention to detail needed. Not a room that one would want to spend time in. And noisy extractor fan or similar just outside.

That we had to pay £50 each to use the spa

For an expensive room, the furniture was broken.
The restaurant was not a good experience.
Room service didn’t deliver.

Staff were very friendly. Bedroom had very comfortable bed, bath had jacuzzi & TV. Excellent
Disappointed that spa had swimming pool & spa facilities advertised, but to use it we woukd have had to pay an additional £50 to use it. Breakfast hadn't got a great variety & we had to wait on items being replenished. We had lunch & dinner in the restaurant, but unfortunately, the menu was the same.

Good location, comfortable bed
I specifically booked this hotel because it had a pool. I know it said the spa wasn’t included in the price but I have never ever previously not been able to use a pool without paying for the spa, a cost of £50 each for two hours. When having an overnight stay we usually go for a swim before dinner and again in the morning so at the Cairndale hotel two swims for the two of us would cost £200, this is absolutely absurd and completely spoiled our stay. The room was very dated as was the bathroom. All of the floor surroundings in the bathroom were covered in muck, the centre was okay, the grout in the tiles around the shower area above the bath had quite a lot of black mould. The hot breakfast was okay but the choice of cold breakfast was poor compared to other hotels where we have stayed. The tea was poured from a large container and was lukewarm. When I did say to the waiter it wasn’t hot he brought a pot of tea, I don’t know why they don’t do that from the outset. Really disappointed.

Fantastic breakfast. Rooms upgraded since last visit. Disappointed extra charge for pool facility. Staff all very friendly.
Couldn't get water for bath, only shower over bath.

Free parking.
I was upgraded after paying £161.50 per night, the run was tiny, boiling and minimal tea and coffee facilities. Also having to pay £50 for 2 hours in the spa is robbery. Couple all off that to someone ringing the bell and bashing on the door for a couple of hours did not make fire a pleasant stay.

Breakfast fairly average and location good.

This was my second visit to the Cairndale Hotel in 5 days, this time our allocated room was a lot better for our requirements (i.e. more spacious than the previous one). Breakfast was the normal buffet style which was adequate for our requirements.
I was pleased to see they took on board my previous comment (from my last weeks stay) regarding the toaster being the slowest in Dumfries and purchased a new faster toasting machine (well done management team).
All the staff during my two stays were friendly and courteous.
The bed was comfy enough, however in my opinion the only down side was that the bed was too short as mentioned in my previous stays comment, I'm 5'-8" tall and felt my feet over hung the bottom of the bed even though my head was at the headboard.
7.0 / 10.0
Stayed here a few times previously and when you first enter into the foyer your first reaction is, this looks good as it has been recently refurbished and the same applies to the lounge/bar area. Then you make your way to the rooms and the corridors are well presented as they have also been refurbished, then you go to your room which in my opinion is a big let down as the room I was allocated was quite small and the decor dated. The rooms could do with an upgrade which would would make it a first class hotel.
Breakfast was buffet style and was adequate for my requirements however the toaster must have been the slowest one in Dumfries as it too ages to toast one slice of bread (new toaster wouldn't go a miss).
The rooms could do with an upgrade which would would make it a first class hotel. I requested a large double bed (which resulted in two single beds fastened together with a double mattress) which I would say width wise was perfect but length wise was not being 5'-8" my feet overhung the end of the bed so a bit uncomfortable. I would say that the bed was adequate for the size of room.

good location in centre of town
The shower was unpredictable - the flow went off and on, and the temperature fluctuated between hot and cold. Every floorboard creaked, and the TV kept giving me an error message. I was meeting up with friends for a night out, so I didn't have time to report the issue or have it fixed. Breakfast was available between 0730 and 0900. We arrived at 0830. Everything looked a bit tired. The scrambled eggs were watery, the fried eggs swam in grease, the brown bread had run out, and the toaster took five minutes to toast. There was not one piece of fresh fruit. We were offered tea and coffee once but never asked if we wanted a refill. They couldn't tidy up the place fast enough come 0900. I had the impression the hotel was run for the convenience of the staff, not the customer. Not a great experience for the price I paid. Would not recommend.
