David, who runs owns and runs Varlet Farm, is a superb host. He provides free coffee and apple pie on arrival and a superb continental breakfast with lots of homemade food. He is happy to arrange taxis into Ypres or the surrounding towns and could not be more friendly or helpful.

The breakfast is excellent, with clingfilm provided to make up a picnic lunch. If you need anything just ask, we were lent cycling maps, David will phone restaurants to make reservations if you wish. Lots of WW1 reference material available.

Fantastic Host (David). He provided a lovely breakfast in the morning with local cheeses, cold meats and Danish pastries. He will do soft boiled eggs or scrambled eggs to supplement the continental breakfast. He also makes home made jams and raisin bread! It is good for people with bicycles and motorbikes as they can be stored overnight undercover . A lot of world war 1 history associated with the property and an extensive range of books on the topic. David lent us maps and cycle route maps for the area.

Loved that it is a family farm with lots of history including a barn full of excavated WW1 relics. Our room was big and spacious bathroom, David made sure you have everything you need, Breakfasts are the best you’ll have with local bakery pastries and homemade jams, local cheeses and more, David will cook you eggs too, there are even bags on the table so you can take away anything you would like that you’ve left. Take David’s recommendations for evening meals as they were all good . Perfect quiet area close to Ypres and the WW1 battlefields etc .
Nothing what so ever

I had a wonderfull stay at Varlet Farm. It's the ultimate place for a short WW1 tour in the area. The farm was at the frontline in WW1 and can be found on military maps of this time. The owners are very friendly and have been collecting lots of relics found on their own land from WW1. It's an impressive collection. I stayed two nights and managed to do a tour along museums and memorial sites such as the Passendale memoral museum, Tyne Cot Cemetry, Flanders Field Museum in Ypres, The Hoge Crater Museum, Frontline Hoog museum and Hill 26 Sancturary Wood museum as also the German Studenten Friedhof. The Varlet Farm is very central to visit all these impressive musea and memoral sites. The farm is in a rural area. Dogs are allowed, the breakfast is wonderfull and the owner even made me a breakfast to take because I wanted to leave very early. If you want a World War I tour around Ypres or just a quiet stay this is the place to be! Very recomendable!

What did we like? Everything. It was an outstanding stay which couldn't be faulted. A perfect host, super facilities, lovely family, great location. We couldn't have wished for a better stay and I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere I've stayed in over 60 years that has been as good as this; and I've travelled extensively worldwide.

Everything. Fabulous location for visiting region.
Peaceful. Calm. Great host. Excellent location. Homemade bread and jam were very pleasant. Belgium beers in the fridge were top spec and very reasonably priced. Nothing fancy here but that is definitely praise. While stating here, you realise more about what is really important in life. Simple pleasures.

David went above and beyond what we expected. He welcomed us with a piece of lovely home made apple pie and gave us a lot of information about the region and places to go (including restaurants). He was extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much. Definitely to be recommended!

Very nice welcome. It is a working family farm and rural but within five minutes by car to nearest town with buses to Ypres. Nice restaurant there also and supermarket. There is an ‘honesty fridge’ with selection of soft drinks, beers and wines. Breakfasts were marvellous - typical continental with local cheeses and hams, home baked bread, fruit, yogurt and much more. The host had extensive knowledge of the First World War and a small museum of artefacts found on the farm. There were photographs of it after it was destroyed. We also got a map and vouchers to local attractions.

An amazing location , steeped in the history of the Ypres Salient. David was a very hospitable and knowledgeable host who was incedibly helpful in making suggestions and booking restaurants. The local, Passendale, product - cheese and beer, were first class.

Great base for our trip to Flanders. A very comfortable bed and bathroom. A seperate sitting area is supplied which you share with our guests that has complementary tea and coffee facilities and books on the local area history which we utilised extensively. A great breakfast with many different options supplied.

Varlet farm is one of my favourite places to stay when visiting the area. I have never been disappointed. You are treated so well. The breakfast is all local and home made, and David gives very good recommendations for local restaurants.

Excellent host, serving locally sourced produce and home made and plentiful breakfast.
Excellent location for seeing the WW1 memorials.
The farm has it's own museum and collection of artifacts found through the years.
We cycled from the farm and were straight onto well marked cycle routes.

Welcoming (Apple Pie to die for), Very Friendly hosts. Very Very clean accommodation / bedroom and a feast of a breakfast with carefully selected local produce.
Ideally situated to explore Ypres / surrounding area. We stayed for 5 nights and did not want to leave
David and his lovely wife work so hard for the comfort of their guests and it shows. How ANYONE could give them less than 10 out of 10 is beyond me.
Absolutely NOTHING - it is just perfect
