Good value basic off-peak accomodation with friendly staff and great location

The room was clean and comfortable. I booked a 'classic single' and was given a twin room at the back of the hotel (I'm only realising now that they gave me a free upgrade) so my view was of fire escape stairs and an internal courtyard used for services but it was totally fine. The room was fairly basic but had everything I needed: a comfy bed; a desk; a decent shower, bathtub and toilet; a kettle; a small TV. For the £30-ish I paid for the room, I was very happy with what I got. I think it matched the price point exactly. If I was paying more for it during peak season though, I might be a bit disappointed. The staff I dealt with were all very nice as well. The location is also excellent, being in the centre of Oban and less than a minute away from the bus station, and maybe an extra minute away from the train station and ferry terminal. Oh, the wi-fi was good as well! I didn't have any issues with dropped signal and was able to stream and do all my usual stuff no problem. You'd think that'd be standard these days but sadly that's not always the case. It's good to see they understand the importance it has to guests.

The TV could do with being updated (it was a very old, small flatscreen TV with a pretty terrible picture), but that's not exactly essential; like most people would, I mainly used my laptop to watch TV. It looked like there was some dried cleaning product build-up around the taps but that's not a big deal either - someone's just being a bit too quick with wiping it off when they're cleaning. Plenty of clean houses have the same if you look; it's not a five-star hotel so I don't expect five-star standards. In that vein, the bathroom's a bit dated but still fully intact and functioning and totally fine for the price point. (To be clear: the room and the hotel were clean.) One thing I would ask that they change is the bin bags for the guest bins. I tried to take mine out to use for something and it split pretty much instantly. I imagine that that would be the case with even minimal use and could lead to leakages. I imagine it's a huge pain for the cleaners as well. It's a very small thing that would make a big difference.

Reception staff are a credit to The Royal, very friendly and helpful.

Room allocated was cold as was at the end of the building with fire escape doors. Reception allocated a heater for the room with an alternative option of moving room.

Lovely hotel & very comfortable stay.

Location is excellent. We had booked a sea view room and were upgraded to a superior. This was a much bigger room, very spacious and very comfortable bed. Staff were excellent as well.

Hotel is older so shows some signs of wear & tear. This is NOT a comp!ain't - it's for those who book and don't take this into consideration when writing their reviews. But it is a beautiful hotel, comfortable & friendly.

I have stayed in The Royal Hotel several times over the years because of its location near to the Railway Station and Ferry Terminal.

We have visited this Hotel for 20+years and will continue to visit, as our favourite Oban Hotel.

Large bedroom with large ensuite. Excellent household staff, ie fresh towels, clean room, etc. Breakfasts plentiful and well cooked. Bar meals in evening very tasty and served in cosy/warm lounge bar. (Dining room closed Winter months ?) Novels on shelf beside lift - nice touch for readers. Good location with short walk to ferries/train/buses/town centre.

Poky free car park, but no room to expand. Our fourth floor room situated below Family room with very squeaky floor boards above and little sound insulation. Tinned or fresh fruit at Breakfast would be nice.

It is a beautiful old style hotel . We had the room at the top which was lovely and comfortable and the views were fantastic. The staff were all friendly and the breakfast was lovely plenty of choice. Close to the ferry and train. We’re looking forward to coming back 😊xx

Room was certainly not a superior room, had to sit on the bed or stand if you wanted to look out over the bay. Lounge bar was the only place to sit, no comfortable chairs to relax in.

Great location; minutes from the town centre and station, good value bar meals and views of the harbour from the fith floor

Probably the slowest lift in the world. The fire alarm went off Friday night and staff seemed unclear what to do, with most of the guests still in the hotel bar not the muster point.

Not particularly comfortable for the price

Very good location for the ferry terminal and access to shops. Breakfast looked fine but I don't eat much for breakfast. There was a kettle in the room for tea.

The sharply sloping floor and the way the bed was positioned meant my feet were higher than my head which made for a very uncomfortable night. I was wakened at 6.15am by the excessive rumblings of what I took to be the hot water system. By the time I took my shower at 7am the water was somewhere between cold and tepid. I thought it was excessively expensive for a cramped room with a window that wouldn't shut looking onto another wall and a drainpipe and offering no hot water.

well organised and very clean area friendly staff food display excellent and checked regularly and topped up accordingly - quality of food excellent ( having as much as you wanted)

For me cup size too small - Ilke a mug :) My room was above the bars and being a Saturday night live music - I didnt need to go down stairs to listen to it

At almost £200 for one night stay, it certainly fell far short of expectation......

The entertainment in the ground floor bar in the evening was really good, with a local guy singing and playing guitar. Despite the height of the windows, the view over the harbour area was exceptional....

Bedroom floor wasn't level and the windows were too high to see out of. The bathroom had an off smell and the cistern was faulty. There was a bedside lamp that had such a low rated bulb that it had an illumination level of a small candle.... The breakfast room looked dirty and third world.....
