The overall cleanliness of the place. There was food remnants on the skirting boards behind my headboard. Dust on quite a lot. Even the water jug needed to be cleaned before filling and the water station looked like it hadn’t see a hoover behind it for quite some time as there were various bits of litter and a good layer of dust very visible to hotel guests. Distinct lack of plug sockets, overall quite grotty. I should think the head cleaner needs a talking to as for a 4* hotel this is extremely poor. Staff on arrival did the very bare minimum.. I’ve received better service at a budget hotel quite frankly

Great historic hotel, right in the city centre

We hesitated because of some of the reviews that we read, but decided to book anyway because the price was so reasonable. We didn't regret it! This is a fantastic historic building in the centre of Chester. We had a huge room, with the bathroom on a split level, and a view down Frodsham street. Despite the listed status of the building the soundproofing was very effective and the outside noise did not disturb us. The decor isn't what you'd find in a modern hotel, but is well maintained and in keeping with a hotel of it's age. If you like a hotel with some character and charm and a fantastic location, this place is great. The price to stay in a 4 star hotel is much cheaper than some of the characterless big chains that are located further away from the city centre. We'll definitely stay again when we're back in Chester.

I couldn’t sleep both nights as it was extremely noisy there was a lot happening outside the window and the room I was such a long way from reception with heavy bags wasn’t ideal

Bathroom was dirty, toothpaste splashed on tiles to left of basin, black mould on silicone around bath/shower, extraction fan full with dust, rust on the hand soap dispenser. Carpet with numerous stains, two tub chairs in desperate need of re-upholstery (holes and bare thread). Jug for water and ice holder but no bottles of water and no fridge!!

It was very clean and a good central location

House keepers just let themselves in my room in the morning even though I had put a do not disturb sign on the door. They didn’t even knock prior to barging in.

Dirty room

The hotel was centrally located in Chester, excellent access to bars, shops and activities. Close to reasonably priced overnight secure carpark The staff were polite and friendly The bed linen was clean and of good quality The bed was comfortable but we didn't use the pillows because of the vile staining We gave our opinion to the very nice receptionist on checkout, who appeared shocked but obviously not enough to pass on to a manager because we have not been contacted with an apology or explanation

Pretty much everything else 😔 The hotel decor/furnishing was generally tired and in need of upgrading The hotel is apparently four star but would struggle to meet 2 stars in our opinion Cleanliness is poor, our room/bathroom (Room 110) was very dirty Stains on carpets Dirty bathroom floor tiles and filthy wall tiles-see photos-particularly around taps, shower screen etc, but generally dirty in bath, toilet and basin; bleach and a scrubbing brush would much improve matters. We didn't use the shower because it was so dirty and only used the bathroom with shoes on because the tiles were so dirty We didn't use the complementary tea tray in case the standard was similar to the bathroom The mattress and pillows were horribly stained. The hotel was very expensive for a filthy environment Light bulbs not working, light fittings dirty We did not pay or stay for breakfast or use the bar.

Where do I start… Booked 8 bedrooms that night and added an extra bedroom the night before. The bedroom I was given was very dated, the remote control did not work but the real issue was the bathroom. Unless you were a 10 years old you could not enter the bathroom as in walking in… you had to slide in between the door and the sink. Room 119 is not fit for purpose. Very noisy and felt like I was sharing it with the other guests. The day team at reception was poor too. They managed to checking one of my colleagues in my room which is unacceptable.

Stayed previously however this time the shower was broken & hanging off the wall , we only noticed in the morning when wanting to get ready for breakfast! Breakfast was a shambles…30 minutes to take the order that was after we got the staffs attention, 6 tables of couples dining so not busy by any means…another 45mins passed no staff alerted us to there being an issue with the kitchen. Breakfast was served to two tables they advised it was cold, we were then advised at least another 30 min delay so we cancelled breakfast and received a refund for this! We were told to email a complaint abt the shower, I emailed the day we checked out and still no response from the McDonald chain, not happy at all! Avoid! Several couples also raised similar complaints, reception was unmanned for at least 20 mins and was understaffed from what we could see.

Friendly efficient reception staff and maintenance staff dealt with a couple of issues in our room immediately. Room was large enough, bed very comfortable. Bath as well as shower was good.

The first night the radiator in room blasted heat constantly, we were unable to lower thermostat, we couldn’t sleep due to heat. We opened the window for fresh air to cool room but the noise outside in centre from traffic, people shouting and council cleaning streets and setting up stalls early morning was noisy. We reported the radiator to reception the following day and maintenance fixed the issue immediately. Stains on bedroom carpet which was threadbare in places. Hook on back of bathroom door hanging off. Black mould in grouting in bath/shower. Plastic seal missing from shower screen at bottom allowed water from shower to flood the area around bath every time we showered, having to mop up with towels. Only one working plug socket in room, we asked for a multi cable which was provided promptly. Not a lot of breakfast options, would have liked some fresh fruit but what we had was not bad value. Postcards addressed to previous guest left in room on table.
