The location of this hotel was beautiful, right on the lakeside in the centre of Bowness.
Whilst the hotel was clean, it was definitely dated in areas and we felt that we were really paying for the location alone. Mattress was very soft, so a bit uncomfortable for us personally.
It was very disappointing to find additional costs such as £25 per night for the carpark, which was really just an old, random concrete space with a barrier, and then to find at breakfast, that everything except a full English breakfast was also charged a £5 supplement?? How can you justify l charging an additional £5 for poached eggs and avocado on toast when we've already paid the bed and breakfast rate?

The weather

Nice breakfast and staff were always polite and professional
The standard double rooms are right next door to another property with a very loud, and unpleasant late bar (3am).
The rooms only have single pane windows and you are lucky to get more than three hours sleep.
Hotel seriously needs to upgrade its sound proofing for the cheaper rooms (still £189 per night)

Great location, staff were pleasant
Felt very dated and in need of new carpets and more luxuries for the price, such as shampoo, face cloth and moisturiser in bathroom, more choice at breakfast buffet area.
The swimming pool was freezing cold, steam room out of order and floor around pool area was dirty.

Near to the town
The room was too hot breakfast wasn’t warm enough the ladies toilet was closed for cleaning as breakfast was been served to be told there wasn’t another toilet I did go to men’s as I have a medical condition the smell was so bad of wee

The location was excellent, both staff members i came across were lovely. Loved the bath!!!
I did read reviews about not being able to contact staff for room service. I tried ringing the number between various times (5-8pm) but never an answer.
Behind the heater/under window there was a lot of damp.

The location was great, beautiful view of the Lake. The gym was good and had everything I needed. Swimming pool was a good size, spa facilities were also good. Staff all very lovely
There was a really big gap in our door that lead to the hall way.. so much so we could see through it quite well.. this made us slightly nervous about leaving valuables in our room. Despite there being a safe which was helpful. It didn’t feel nice knowing that gap was there when we left our room for the day and also during the night. Nothing happened & everything was thankfully fine, but just a bit of a worry.

Location of the hotel and the view from the room. Good breakfast.
Parking £25 a night. Room was tired. Room facilities were cheap and nasty. No help with luggage to and from car park. Towel missing from bathroom. Bed base is in need of replacement or repair. Not worth £222 for one night.

Very hot bedrooms. It’s weird the beds and bed sheets made the nights very warm. Very uncomfortable

Fantastic location with beautiful views from the bar and breakfast room. Very nice pool and spa area. Incredibly comfy beds. Very nice staff.
Room needed some TLC. Looked like someone had wiped their nose on one wall. Behind the secondary double glazing had not been cleaned for a long time as lots of mould. Room very hot at night, made it difficult to sleep.

Location is good
The property in my opinion is very tired . The breakfast included in the package is only average , very limited no fresh fruit available .
Shower in room could do with a refurb , grout missing in tiles , black mold around the sealant .
No fridge in room . We booked a superior deluxe room

Size of room , gym , openess of bar , Christmas decorations, friendly reception
Gent in restaurant at breakfast literally told a friend of mine off for walking in and sitting with her parents she did go back out and wait to be seated , but spoke to her rather loudly I was on the next table and could hear him , noticed he was a bit gobby with others too . DISCRETION would be key for him

Location and views whilst having breakfast
Swimming pool was really cold. Steam room hardly any steam and sauna wasn’t very hot. Room is dated. No fridge in the room and no hair conditioner supplied which you would expect in a four start hotel and money paid.

The lake view and position of the hotel
No central heating, breakfast was poor, hard bacon and not much of it, coffee was weak, thought it was very expensive for the services, car park expensive should be free when paying what we paid

Some parts need updating but beautiful building
Price of hotel , it's beautiful and in a great location but pricey and very old fashioned needs some parts updating ,
And u have to pay extra £25 to park ur car on there own car park which should be free with what u pay for a room

So close to the lake & the spa
Parking wasn’t close to the hotel & £25 a night is way too expensive

Food
A Fridge in room and mini bar selection would have been nice seeing as we upgraded to king superior deluxe . Free slippers in room also would have been good as we had robes ( had to pay £8 in spa to use slippers for 30 mins which seemed silly) witnessed small argument between bar staff which wasn’t god etiquette . Some lifts were not working . But all in all we had a good break

The location overlooking lake Windermere was fabulous. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. The breakfast was tasty and breakfast room view was stunning.
The cost of parking in the hotel car park.
Some of the staff were indifferent both on reception and in the restaurant.
Bar area was a bit tired.

Nothing perfect start to finish

Friendly staff and were always helpful to answer any questions. Our room was exceptionally clean with comfortable beds. Great view from our room as well.
Overpriced despite the complimentary breakfast. Restaurant food was adequate - great service, but almost £70 per person for a 3-course set menu meal, along with few A La Carte options, certainly wasn't worth the money. It's better to dine elsewhere with plenty of other options in Windermere. Unfortunately, like other reviewers have mentioned, the spa treatments must be booked well in advance as bookings are quickly taken. Booking spa treatments on the day certainly isn't recommended and ought to be booked before checking in.

Swimming pool was cold this time and was even colder in October, staff rush you up at breakfast time, before you finish your cereal the cooked breakfast is shoved onto your table.Didn’t bother on last day had breakfast on motorway service station instead.

Location, rooms well furnished with quality bed linen. Breakfast good choices and flexible for coeliac diet. Friendly staff in the bar.
Towels probably due for replacement soon, didn't match up to the quality of the bedding.
Car park charge and location, if you have luggage be sure to drive to the hotel door to drop suitcases off before moving car to the car park.

Staff were great from reception to the barman who made me an excellent old fashioned cocktail to the team in the spa where the massages were excellent
Position is great overlooking the lake is amazing
Xmas decorations were excellent
Room was very large and comfortable
NEEDS MAINTENANCE
SPA POOL TEMP
HOSPITALITY PRICEY
Feels like it needs a bit of up keep, the extractor fan in our en suite didnt work or the music speaker.
Rooms was initially cold as only one rad on but after we turned 2nd one on was ok
Pool in the spa definitely needed to be 3-4 degrees warmer !!!
Food whilst very good was expensive we paid £150 for 2 of us and only alcohol was glass red wine.
Might explain why not many guests eating in restaurant.
Other incidental prices were quite steep such as £13 for a cocktail and £5 for a lattee coffee at the bar (not even from a barrista style machine !)

Macdonald old England Hotel & spa was perfect was in the middle of Windermere lovely lake view. Staff helped you when possible
We both loved staying there,
Only thing I’d suggest is maybe putting a kettle in the room with condiments like tea, coffee.
Also don’t know if I’m getting old but pop a phone in the room to access room service as we scanned the QR code and sent us to another hotel.
We had to go down to reception to order our room service. Apart from that was a fantastic stay and we will be back

Great staff. Careful, thoughtful, and entirely helpful.
Some good lake views. And excellent position.
Very good breakfast and overall value.
Constantly cllimbing up and down stairs (I know, there was a lift....). A rather bare feel to some of the main hotel tools. Background music is barely audible.. so, a bit lacking in the atmosphere..

The view from the room amazing, the comfort of the bed, friendly staff, the location is excellent and the food was absolutely gorgeous we had the set 3 course meal
£25 to park 200 yards away with the hotel, sauna is not hot, pool is quite cool. Shower in the room takes about 20 minutes to warm up and theres mold on the lower ground corridor.

An amazing location and a beautiful building with character and charm. Our room was amazing with a breathtaking view of the lake.
9.0 / 10.0
Food vastly improved since my last visit. I had the lamb selection and it was really good.
Only downside was not a good view from from room back of other rooms - lake view would have improved my visit - we had two rooms and neither had any view and were not given the option to either upgrade or pay additional to have the view.

The swimming pool and the breakfast- served in a magnificent dining area with fantastic lake views.
No phones in the bedroom - apparently a McDonalds policy which I consider crazy.
No sockets beside the beds for phone charging (or anything). My TV wouldn't work
No phone to contact reception. Very frustrating.

Absolutely Fantastic location.
Comfortable beds, spacious clean rooms.
Bathroom facilities were nice.
Breakfast is really good.
Super fast room service.
Staff really helpful, accommodating and friendly
It was very hot. So we turned down the radiators and opened the windows so nothing we couldnt sort.
Just wish the spa facilities were open a little longer, maybe till 7/8pm, just as we are hikers so it would be nice to get back and head for a shower and swim but understand it may not be cost effective and thats our choice for hiking so I wouldn't hold this against them. Its a really nice hotel.
