The bed was a small double which we were not used to.

We had a wonderful stay at The Poplars, a beautiful 19th-century guest house full of character, charm and history. From the moment we arrived, we felt really welcomed. The house has been beautifully cared for while retaining so many of its original features and quirks. There is so much character throughout, and it has a lovely warm, homely feel rather than feeling like a typical guest house. There are lovely areas to sit and relax, and we particularly enjoyed the cosy bar/sitting room with its wonderful stone fireplace. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and a real highlight of our mornings. There is also an outdoor swimming pool, which we unfortunately didn’t get the chance to use, but it looked lovely and very clean. It would definitely be something we’d make use of if we returned. The car park is quite tight, but it is very well managed, so we had no problems. The guest house is situated on a road, so there is some road noise, which is worth being aware of if you’re sensitive to noise, but it certainly didn’t spoil our stay. What really made The Poplars special was the warmth and hospitality. We felt genuinely looked after and nothing seemed too much trouble. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return. The Poplars is a real little gem and somewhere we’d definitely recommend.

Breakfast was very nicely cooked. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. We were allowed to have our dog stay over in a balcony room.

The rooms are small, the decor is tired although kept clean and pleasant. Parking is tricky although that’s not the owners fault. I stayed in a balcony room and my next door neighbour with a balcony was smoking cigarettes. Unfortunately their smoke came right into my room at 7am so v unpleasant start to the day! I had to close the door which meant it got very hot.
