St Martins Guest House - Rooms Only

The shared self-catering facilities were excellent. The cleaner came in several times a day and the place was spotless in spite of the kitchen/diner being used mostly by working men. Never experienced automatic curtains opening and closing before! Supermarkets very nearby.

No actual garden, just small decking areas surrounded by high fences, and large paved parking area in the front.

The main house felt more homely than I was expecting for accommodation, the rooms were bright and cheerful, the bed was so comfortable, the bathroom was just right even thiugh they are smaller (loved having my own bathroom, especially as a lass travelling on her own) overall it's definitely somewhere I would recommend and have even taken note so if I ever need to be in the area again I would definitely stay again.

The only thing I would suggest is air con as the room was too hot. I do realise the weather is not in their control and they did have a fan made available but it was only blowing warm air and I did not feel comfortable leaving a window open all night on the ground floor in am area I did not know.

It’s a very spacious area where we could prepare or cook our meals. Utensils are provided!

The curtains are a bit short and don’t fully close.

The property was clean and nicely furbished with good facilities in the bedroom, slightly problematic in the kitchen (see below) but nevertheless largely very good. The owner was very kind and friendly and amazingly helpful and flexible for our bicycles. The location was close to where we needed to be for the next day. We could cook our own meal with supplies bought from a couple of larger supermarkets nearby.

Although I understood St Martin's to be rooms only and therefore security is important, it was complicated to access the property, needing to download a key App firstly for the first door once I had confirmed my email address and then needing to read the online manual for the code to the second door and for the code to the bedroom. It's ingenious but people planning to stay here should expect to be in contact with the property in advance to get the App link so you don't have to do this when you arrive as we did and to be prepared to use codes to get in and out. For us, we prefer a hotel experience and we stayed in nicer places which are hosted for the same or less cost in Dunbar, Berwick on Tweed, Newcastle etc and which frankly are nicer places to stay than Tranent. The first frying pan we used shed its Teflon coating all over our food so we had to change pans and buy replacement supplies. Having said that, the owner who we met is very nice and very helpful and he has made a big effort with the property. I just didn't think the experience reflected what we paid to stay for a night.
