A disaster, and very lucky to find alternative accommodation
Below is the message I sent to the letting company who manage this property on behalf of the landlord and in fairness they were great in not arguing fault and gave me a full refund. What I sent them is as follows:
I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the accommodation at 13 Borough Street, where I was scheduled to stay for three nights booked via Booking.com. My experience was extremely disappointing and below acceptable standards, leading me to check out immediately after arrival. I request a full refund for this stay.
*Initial Impressions and External Conditions:* Upon arrival yesterday, I was shocked to see the surrounding area. The streets were dirty, with many properties appearing abandoned or in disrepair. The overall environment did not reflect the expectations set by your listing, which was misleading.
*Property Conditions and Safety Concerns* Inside the property, I encountered numerous issues, including:
*Severe hygiene problems:* There was an overpowering smell of dirt and urine, which was impossible to ignore. Flies were circling the living room, and I captured photos and videos that clearly illustrate this issue.
*Security issues:* The large bedroom window was misaligned and could not be locked. The top section was completely inoperable, raising concerns about safety.
*Electrical faults:* The kettle turned off prematurely during boiling, and a mobile charger plugged into an outlet also failed to charge properly. These issues indicate electrical faults, posing a fire risk.
*Fire safety violations:* The consumer unit is improperly installed— with it being a non-metal unit located nearly 3 meters high in the corridor, without a protective cover, and not compliant with EICR standards. This is not easily accessible as it should be and significantly increases fire safety risks.
*Cleanliness and external neglect:* The outside areas were littered with cigarette butts and rubbish, with full bins left outside.
