Comfortable room at a reasonable price in a convenient location.

The hotel was centrally located in Leiden, with easy walking access to the train station, shops, restaurants and cafes.

There was a pub close by that got noisy during the evening hours.

Great location and good price for a popular location

The hotel was priced well as the new owners are going to do a refurb later in the year. The location was superb as you could walk down the back streets to some good bars and a local quality Chinese restaurant. Staff were very friendly and breakfast more than ample.

Pretty good and straightforward but with a major hiccup at the start (hopefully a one-off)

The central location and old-style interior. It certainly had an ‘atmosphere.’

The fact that it was closed and inaccessible during check-in time. We had to make several phone calls (initially only to answer phones) and then wait for a total of 30 minutes before someone came and let us in (without much by way of apology). The lamp in the room needed fixing, too (see pic), though it was fine otherwise.

There was a large separate bathroom with a separate shower and bath. Breakfast was cheap and plentiful and served promptly.

The hotel is showing its age and could do with a refresh.

Very comfortable stay in Leiden

We were very happy staying at De Dololen. The host was very accommodating and friendly, and let us have breakfast at no additional cost. The beds were comfy, the room and bath were clean, and there was a fan provided for hot nights. It was very charming staying in a historic building, and the location was perfectly situated near shops and restaurants. Not too far from the train station and away from the busier streets. Breakfast was a substantial continental spread, featuring eggs, yogurt, assorted breads, meat, fruit, and cheese.

Worthwhile, nice owner, middle of beautiful Leiden.

The owner was excellent and attentive and carried my luggage up the stairs without me asking. Location is wonderful. Beautiful old building. Walkable to train station or via nearby bus. Cafes and many unique shops nearby. Very pleasant stay, on a canal.

The building is literally an antique and lovely, so no elevator. So instead of a charmless Ibis I got a character place but then I couldn’t face climbing up many steep stairs to my single room more than once a day, lazy asthmatic. There is a ground floor toilet so you don’t need to go to your room in the day time. Friday night there was a lot of noise coming in my window (maybe there’s pub behind this hotel) until 11.30 pm. The shower was good. A soft and comfortable single bed. Good tv and wifi. Wished for a second pillow but forgot to ask. Leiden hotels seem very expensive, perhaps there’s not many. At least there are single rooms here, grateful, solo travellers usually get hit hard with two people / double only room prices.

Charming Small Hotel

De Doelen is a charming small hotel in a renovated majestic old home. It is in a great location close to all amenities including transport, museums, restaurants and bars. The staff/owners were fabulous and we were well looked after.

The old stairs are narrow and might be difficult for some. However, there are ground floor rooms and the owner kindly helped us with our bags to the first floor.

Spacious rooms, great breakfast, very good location. The two brothers running this family business are very nice and helpful. My wife has mobility issues and they immediately gave us a room at a lower floor (a better room by the way, at no extra cost).

Staff helpful - helped find alternate hotel that would meet our 2 bed requirements. Complimentary coffee. Good location.

Stressed on booking that 2 beds were required. Two bed room was given away on arrival. First night room was very small with one bed. Second night we were given a larger room with two beds.

The hotel has charm by virtue of its history and lovely architectural details ! Has great potential.

Had to run, had no time for breakfast.

Walls poorly insulated and neighboring rooms are unusually noisy, at times as if tenants were in the room with me ! Given that the building is historic and room space is limited, it would help to significantly soundproof all walls in each suite. Improved and more substantial doors would also help with this problem.

The hotel is in a great location. The staff was friendly and helpful. It is a modest, but clean and nice accommodation. Only thing is the more difficult accessibility typical for old dutch buildings.

The location was central and the hotel is an interesting historic house.

It was very noisy outside on a Saturday night, with loud student parties. The breakfast was ok, except that the coffee machine did not work. My room was cold at night.
