Food was very good, although a few more veggie options would have been better, particularly if we'd been staying longer. Room was ok, perhaps needs a bit of a refurb (main bathroom light was intermittent). Bed was comfortable enough. Good location for our particular visit.
Bit of intrusive traffic noise in the room, but not a great problem. (Earplugs provided so must be a factor in the summer season?!) Also, being right next to the exit door, it sounded like people were coming into our room every time they entered or left! Bit disconcerting, & in the busiest periods could be a real nuisance. Would ask NOT for Rooms 1 or 2 if we stayed again.

The food was very good and priced reasonably. Staff helpful. The rooms comfortable but a bit dated need an upgrade
The venue looked a bit tired but still very comfortable.

Nicole was excellent - our Breakfast waitress, she was polite, helpful and knowledgeable, and kept the coffee coming! Location was great, it's right on the road junction, so handy for navigation purposes. Food was good and excellent portion sizes. Good pudding idea of a 'smaller dessert and a hot drink' which was ideal for us, we didn't feel like we were missing out on a pudding (the ones on the menu are a really good portion size, which was too much for Mum) I thought I'd booked a single room but got a double (they don't have singles, no matter what Booking.com tells you!). Asked for a non-slip bathmat (advertised in bathroom) and was given one immediately for Mum.
Entrance through pub, hotel rooms upstairs with no lift. Later we found residents can access the rooms via overflow car park, although to eat dinner in the restaurant, you still have to go down the same stairs (not so great for my 80 yr old Mum) and there's no warning of this... Both our rooms had limited headroom, which was ok for us but my 6'4 Dad wouldn't have been able to stand up all week!! The road outside is rather busy and lots of road noise in Mum's room (mine was at the back, so didn't hear it) local roads were flooded and closed, paths were wet and slippery.

The service of booking.com which was utterly disgraceful

We enjoyed the locality of venue as we were doing the polar express with family. We met up with friends who live locally for a really nice meal which we all enjoyed
There was no view really from bedroom window but why did that matter. It suited all of our purposes otherwise.

Nice staff. Comfy bed. Clean room.
Room too small. Key was difficult to open door. Got soaked in the rain. Traffic noise appalling, even with ear plugs.

Friendly staff and comfy beds
Room had lots of cobwebs and could do with a thorough clean. Road very noisy. Breakfast pretty awful in terms of quality of cooking; no white bread !

The whole weekend was wonderful. Food was good to excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The toilet was very low. And the eves in the bedrooms caused many a bumped head.
Traffic noise was loud but earplugs provided.

Breakfast was good .
I like the bath tub .
It was quiet.
Room was a good temperature .
There were stairs leading to the room which was tricky with a heavy case, but some one did carry it up for me but unfortunately I had to do it in the morning. Also a bit remote if you have no car relying on taxis . I was charged extra for pick up as it was abit remote.

Staff, food, location and facilities were all great.
The room was cold and had a very thin wall between rooms.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely bar and eating area. Food available until late evening. Food quality very good with wide variety. Reasonable prices. Bit noisy near main road but staff thoughtfully provided earplugs but we did not need them.
Only downside which I am reluctant to mention in view of our very happy stay, was no bread for breakfast on our second day of stay

The staff were wonderful and very helpful, rooms were fantastic, clean and comfortable. Fantastic location to polar express. Breakfast was amazing too and Nicole doing Breakfast was so lovely and friendly
The rooms are very thin walls could hear the man next door brushing his teeth but apart from that was excellent stay.

Clean, well presented
No staff. Seriously under staffed. Obvious Christmas parties happening during our stab- December 18. There were 2 staff waiting tables/manning bar - not enough people. We, along with many other people waited at the bar with NO staff for a long time.
Milk at breakfast was sour

Excellent location with a great bar area and extensive menu.
The rooms are spotlessly clean, and a great size. The bed was a small double but very comfortable. The bathroom room is small but well equipped.

Nothing, great place.

Comfortable bed and a quite nice shower once I'd figured out the controls. Why are these huge rainfall shower heads everywhere now? I'd rather choose if I want to wash my hair or not! Room was spacious and well-equipped.
Despite the comfy bed the stay was underwhelming. The service was slow and unwelcoming or staff were entirely absent. I had to hang about to check in while someone who could operate the touchscreen to be summoned. The door lock of my room was glitchy and took an age to get the key out every time I used it. Bedside light fittings were loose and felt quite dangerous. I couldn't mention these at the time because when I checked out next morning there was no one to be found, so I just left the keys.
I asked for some oat milk for the room, not an outlandish request in 2025, but they didn't have any. Same again at breakfast. Food was okay but service was slow, both in the evening and in the morning, when I was waiting to get to a meeting, and I would've appreciated the option of a lighter evening meal - soup or something similar.
TLDR this pub stay was at my usual price point for regular work trips to Devon but was disappointing in several key areas. If you've got rooms, make a least some effort to make guests feel welcome, and keep up with essential maintenance.

Staff were very attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble thanks
Nothing really. Room was a little small and the wardrobe doors a little creaky but didn't spoil our visit

Loved the friendly homely atmosphere. Room was clean and had everything we needed. Staff were happy and couldn’t do enough for us
The traffic was noisy but nothing could be done about that. The supply of earplugs was very thoughtful.

No eggs for two mornings.
The special on the menu was duck but that also was off menu as they had run out of it.
We paid in advance for bed breakfast and evening meal but were not considered in the table allocation in the evening so had to sit in the pub area which was not what we were led to believe was part of our booking. Combined with this it was our wedding anniversary , so supposed to be a special break but turned out not to be.A A b

Clean and tidy room and en suite
The kitchen industrial fan is directly below the window of the room we stayed in. It made a very loud continuous noise, from the early hours of the morning.

Clean room, large bed, nice bathroom
Hand wash soap hadn't seen any soap for months. Top of the stairs furthest door - had to duck to get in room. Some sort of generator / fryer running a lot of noise 7:30am to 9:30pm

Ideal location. Breakfast really good.
We arrived an hour early and were told if we wanted to check in early we would have to pay £20. We therefore sat in the bar and had a drink. When we did check in we were shown the restaurant and asked if we needed to reserve a table if we wanted to eat later. We were told there’s no need. When we went to restaurant a few hour’s later, the waitress said ‘would we mind sitting in the bar to eat as she was working on here own’. So we had order our food at the bar which was disappointing. We also had to wait nearly an hour for food after we were told it would be 30 minutes! The restaurant/bar did not seem that busy.

We liked the location in Buckfastleigh very near the river Dart, Dartmoor and the south Devon coast around Dartmouth. We liked the relaxed atmosphere. And particularly that it was a dog friendly venue. The cooked breakfast was good and the staff helpful.
The twin room No 11 was rather dark and stuffy had a sloping eaves ceiling. There was also considerable sound drift from nearby rooms, music from the bar below, road traffic and very squeaky floorboards although earbuds were provided. Also you could not open the eaves window to air and freshen the room.

Staff were efficient and food came fairly quickly.
When we had moved rooms the new one was quieter except for the road noise which was expected.
I had booked a twin room but was told this was no longer available. We then got a room above the kitchen which had a very loudly disfunctioning extracter fan outside our window. Not acceptable at all.
We had to complain to get moved. Not good enough on any accounts.

Breakfast very good. Location noisy on main road.
Bathroom main light and heated towel rail not functioning. Low ceiling had to be treated with care by window - and I'm only 5'2".

The room was spotlessly clean, very nicely decorated, can't fault it
Nothing, very pleased with our visit
7.0 / 10.0
The room was comfortable. Some rooms were quieter than others. They were very accommodating with the two small dogs we brought.
It is in quite a noisy location so was not particularly restful in the rooms nearer the road.
8.0 / 10.0
Yes a lovely room and good location for the south west steam valley
Our room was outside a large aircon unit (we were given ear plugs but quite noisy)
1.0 / 10.0
The bathroom had been updated and was okay. Apart from this, there was really nothing to recommend it except its proximity to Ashburton where I was working and where there was no other available accommodation
Our bedroom was right next to a main road which stopped us sleeping.
The bed was positioned so that my husband had to duck under a sloping roof to get to the bathroom. He narrowly avoided knocking himself out when going to the loo in the middle of the night.
We were provided with a set of earplugs in our room in place of sound proof glazing and an electric fan in place of air conditioning!
The room was filty - stained carpet, undusted surfaces and chipped and marked paintwork. The bed was lumpy - clearly an old mattress.
The public areas were also very tired with grimey carpets and chipped and dirty paintwork. One of the paintings had a spatter of blue paint right across it - who knows why !
This was not a cheap option. We were expecting better and felt ripped off and disappointed.
And our two drinks at the hotel bar were eye wateringly expensive.....
