The staff were exceptional throughout. The property and the grounds are really peaceful and attractive.
The gym could do with a bit of an upgrade. Disappointed that the Great Western restaurant was closed and that Smiths Brasserie didn’t have a great selection of green vegetables to accompany the good food that they served up.

The property and its grounds are beautiful and our room (castle room) was spacious enough. Food at the Grill restaurant was very good - we had 3 consecutive dinners. Staff members were mostly pleasant and helpful. The heated wardrobe area was a nice touch for winter.
A few things might be outdated and needed some up-keeping or refurbished - like the blinds in our bathroom (13). The water was barely warm for the bathtub and the drainage in the shower room was very slow. There was not enough shelves nor drawers to put smaller pieces of clothing.

Exceptionally well decorated for Christmas, log fires and lovely ambience. Beautiful grounds, well maintained. Some of the staff were friendly and welcoming
Extremely dog friendly
Breakfast one morning was poor. Buffet not topped up, no yogurt, poor fruit selection and awful table service. At £28 per person very poor value.
Room was not serviced by 3PM and had to ring reception to get it done
Extra charge of £60 per night for bigger room because of having two dogs (both small) on top of £50 per night charge for the dogs - total £220 for two nights
Parking outside hotel was a bit of a shambles - with not nearly enough capacity

Spacious and great for families. We’ve stayed here a couple of times and love the lodge properties. They offer a fantastic balance of privacy and space for groups with the hotel facilities on hand. Perfect for golf and exploring Dartmoor. Dog friendly too, which is a huge plus. Lodges are well appointed and have everything you need for a comfortable family stay.
We didn’t receive our welcome basket or any instructions for ordering lodge service. A day after we arrived we were informed we’d been shown to the “wrong” lodge. We weren’t asked to move but it was a bit bizarre. Spa online booking system is clunky and doesn’t work well, especially if booking for more than one treatment at a time.

The room and housekeeping to the room was excellent. The porter who collected our bags on leaving will go a long way in his career. The location and facilities to relax was also excellent.
The food was not first class. The breakfast was far from value for money. We had to ask for everything - coffee, toast, milk.
The pool was cold.

We liked everything about the property. It is affordable luxury.

Stunning grounds, gardens well-looked-after, peaceful ambience, spa
Some areas need TLC (ceilings), staff lacking training for a 5-star establishment (no offer of assistance from the doorman when arrived in the rain, at check out we weren’t asked how was our stay) - Sally being the exception, the cooked breakfast was disappointing (for example only one half of an English muffin seemed unnecessarily stingy)

The property was beautiful. We loved every minute of our stay, from the time we arrived to the time we left. The girls on reception were wonderful and treated us like superstars. The room was gorgeous. Golf course was amazing. Had great time walking around that, not to mention the variety of lounges were perfect. We would recommend this to anybody looking for a spot of luxury during their stay in the UK.
Everything was perfect

Bovey Castle is set in a beautiful location with lots of facilities- golf course, spa, pool, archery, air riffles etc. it is extremely well presented and captures the modern v old worldview style perfectly. The staff are very efficient but also friendly and very approachable. The rooms are comfortable and very well appointed.
Our room (47) had a low frequency drone present all night which was distracting and made sleeping difficult as everything else so quiet.
The shower door didn’t close properly and led to a pool of water in the bathroom when the shower was run. The seals looked in bad condition and should have been replaced some time agin. But apart from that everything was in good condition

The room was full of flys and when asked to clean them they spayed the room and left the flys to die on the floor And bed
Also our boy is altistic and fussy with food but every time we ordered food to come separate it didn't happen, after 5 happening 5 times our boy didn't eat for 2 whole days

Relaxing, lovely spar and interesting golf course!! Everything as seen on the web site. Couldn’t fault the staff or facility
The main Resturant is only open 50% of the time in the evenings. The other is a brassiere which is ok but the food is only reasonable.
The brasserie and hotel is dog friendly and it was not pleasant having dogs barking at dinner in the brasserie or in the morning outside our room in the corridors. That spoilt the feeling of a luxury hotel. We love dogs but not everyone can control their dogs as they should.
6.0 / 10.0
The location in the countryside, bordering Dartmoor National Park. Golf was good, and the falconry display was excellent.
Felt overpriced for what it was. Food wasn't amazing, service wasn't amazing, felt some of the staff lacked experience-perhaps summer jobs for students. Room wasn't immaculate, pool was small and overcrowded at times, and some of the activities seemed very overpriced. Was dog friendly, but not as dog friendly as some other places we've stayed at.

Attractive hotel with lovely grounds.
The food in the Bistro was mediocre for type of hotel and the service was not great.
The fabric of the hotel was great but the service not commensurate.

location, overall appearance, beautiful grounds, amazing house
we got a disabled room, which was OK, but not what we asked for, and it couldn't be changed. There were signs here and there that the hotel will need refurbishment in not too distant a future. Very golf-focused, not so much on other outdoor activities, such as hill-walking, which is obvious in the area. Some staff members were a little formal and not overly friendly, especially in reception

We stayed 3 nights at Bovey Castle. Sunday lunch in the Great Western Grill was first class, delicious, and the staff were attentive. The room was lovely with a comfortable bed and outstanding countryside views. The room was large, and housekeeping was excellent. Finally, I have found a hotel that leaves milk in the room fridge - perfect. The wild hawk display was fabulous to watch, and Martin's jokes were great. Lunch in the cosy bar area was good. All staff (apart from The Brasserie) were friendly and welcoming, especially Amy at reception.
Our anniversary dinner in the Brasserie was awful. Unattentive staff who left us standing, waiting to be seated, and just kept walking past us as if we weren't there. In the end, we made our way to one of the clean tables (there were quite a few with glasses and plates of food left from previous diners that hadn't been cleared) and then tried to get a server's attention. When we finally ordered our dinner, it came out obviously reheated in a microwave, as it was scaldingly hot. When it finally cooled down, we were underwhelmed by our dishes. I left my pasta as it was bland and went on to order trifle for dessert, which was presented within a minute of ordering and arrived in a small glass. I wasn't impressed. My husband had the chilli and again it was ok, but we make a much better one at home! Dining here was a complete contrast to the delicious three-course lunch we had enjoyed in the Great Western Grill. We also had to tolerate the overwhelming body odour of a server in the Brasserie, which was not nice.
We also disliked the area immediately adjacent to the lift, leading to the swimming pool. It felt like entering a tradesman's entrance with a filthy carpet, a large blue paladin to walk past, and no staff member in sight. This is not what I expect from a 5-star hotel - someone please clean the carpet, and make the entrance for guests nicer. It felt like we shouldn't be there, not the guest entrance to the gym and pool.
And finally, Bovey hosts weddings, and on our visit, one took place on a Monday, which also happened to be our wedding anniversary. What annoyed us was that the terrace, which we wanted to sit on in the evening and enjoy a wine with a view, was blocked off to hotel guests as the wedding party were using it for their evening celebrations. Having paid a decent amount to stay here, I don't think this should happen; guests should be given access to all hotel areas.

Nice indoor swimming pool
Friendly staff at reception and bar
The rude behaviour of some of the staff at the restaurant ( dinner )
One staff member threw the plates onto the table in an aggressive and unprofessional way. This is totally unacceptable. The lady was the only friendly and professional member.
The choices on the menu were not according to a 5 * hotel ( pizzas, burgers, Ceasar salad…..)
The worst breakfast ever experienced for such a hotel category ( at 1010, a lot of items were already missing ( no croissant, no pain au chocolat….) On top, the staff was unfriendly.
Our stay was a real disappointment……

Breakfast was great, good selection and excellent staff. Dinner was with friends (9) and we were looked after well. The location is stunning and very releaxing.
Had a problem with check in which was resolved partly my fault but could have been handled better and an awkward bar staff member who probably was having an off day but it was annoying at the time especially in a hotel that takes its' service and care seriously.

Hotel was outstanding and the staff were all exceptional.
Make sure your settings on your sat nav do not take you through the back roads. View your journey before setting off is a must. This is no reflection on the hotel just its location
