Poor check-in experience and unresolved complaint
I stayed with four guests over the Christmas period in 2025. The check-in experience was highly disappointing. The staff provided confusing and inconsistent information regarding basic amenities (slippers), which was compounded by an unhelpful and defensive attitude.
While the rooms were acceptable, this created a very poor first impression during a holiday stay. I submitted a formal complaint to management. While they apologized and stated staff would be retrained, they ultimately refused any form of compensation for the incurred inconvenience, only offering a discount on a future stay. After a lengthy process, I found their resolution to be unsatisfactory. Potential guests should be aware of potential service inconsistencies and the hotel's stance on resolving guest issues.

Great location, right next to the station and a 5-10 minute walk to the centre.
Large comfy bed. Big towels.
Staff very friendly.
Even though we were next to the station, we couldn't hear the trains.
The pillows were quite thin, but i suppose I could have asked for more.

proximity to the railway station. Clean rooms.
We checked in late (midnight) and the receptionist was rather rude. The check-in process took forever (while we were the only guests at the time). We eventually were assigned a room for disabled people (with extra equipment in the bath room that we didn't need or asked for). While the price might be in line with similar properties in Utrecht, we thought it was rather expensive.

Motel like experience
Bathroom was okay
Location is really bad, the hotel is pretty much in a busy intersection and right next to the train station. Windows don't open, super noisy whether night or morning, couldn't find how to control the temperature, no room service or options to eat. There was no water in the room, breakfast had limited choices and at 1100 they removed the water as well. 3 stars at best.

It was a comfortable space that was very convenient to the train station.
It was nice and clean with a spacious layout.
We appreciated the service that was provided however felt like the staff didn’t go the extra mile. For example, we needed to contact the train service and the staff were not “able” or willing to assist. Making our communication with the train service unnecessarily difficult.

Tea and coffee in the room. Room was a good size and had a desk. Staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is very convenient for Utrecht Centraal railway station.

Paid nearly £500 for a two-night stay at Gem Strathmore Hotel and was extremely disappointed — tiny

Deeply Disappointed – Not Worth the Price or the 4-Star Rating
I stayed at the Gem Strathmore Hotel for two nights while working at Imperial College and needed to stay nearby. I paid nearly £500 — and honestly, I have no idea who awarded this hotel four stars.
From the moment I arrived, it felt like a rip-off. The first room I was given was the smallest I’ve ever seen. Booking.com stated the room would have a bath — it didn’t. When I asked, I was told I had to upgrade to get one. So I did — and paid an extra £48 — only to be moved to a basement room. Slightly bigger, yes, but still far below expectations for the price.
To top it off, I was woken up every morning by slamming doors and noise. I wondered what it was — then I realised the hotel’s storage room for amenities was right next to mine. Staff were going in and out from early morning, letting the doors bang loudly. Thank you for the wake-up calls — not.
Then came the questionable water. A glass bottle was left in the room with a loose, mouldy metal cap. I asked reception whether it was mineral water. The staff member said she didn’t know, and that it “probably” wasn’t. Again — for nearly £500, is safe, sealed water too much to ask?
The bed was two singles pushed together, not a real double. The mattress and pillows were awful — uncomfortable and unsupportive.
Breakfast? The room was grand, with lovely original decor. But I was told only continental breakfast was included — despite my booking simply stating “breakfast included.” No mention of it being limited. I was expected to pay £25 extra for eggs or meat. No thanks.
Overall, this hotel is overpriced and underdelivers. The location does not justify the cost, and the experience certainly doesn’t reflect a four-star standard. I’m seriously disappointed and will be raising this with Booking.com. I absolutely do not recommend this hotel and won’t be staying again.

Perfection.
The location is perfect! We were able to walk or bike everywhere we wanted. There’s a ‘bike garage’ to keep bike’s locked in overnight. Every member of the staff was friendly and helpful. They seemed to always be smiling.

! a few minutes after checking in, the receptionist came knocking on our door to tell us that an error had been detected on the smoke detector. I opened the door, he came in, checked and found nothing wrong. He told me everything was fine, then left. However, an hour later, he came back with a technical manager and told us they were going to kick us out from the room without refund, because according to them, we had removed the smoke detector and then put it back.
This seemed strange, especially as we had just arrived, and after less than five minutes, the receptionist was already at our door to tell us about an anomaly with the smoke detector. When we returned to the room later that evening, the night receptionist warned us that if there were any safety issues, they would kick us out immediately. I find this situation really abnormal: they were aggressive, threatening, and seemed to be looking for a pretext to evict us without a valid explanation. I'm shocked and I still don't understand their attitude.

Friendly staff in the morning and helpful .. the location is perfect there is shopping area just 5 minutes walk .
but the staff in the night not helpful .. we asked for water and he gave us 4 small bottles and we wear 6 persons !!! We arrived the hotel at 11 pm and we have medicine !!
We booked executive triple room but we got other room with a small window .. we wear supposed to have full wall window as the pictures in booking !!
The room in the pictures has yellow cousins and navy blanket .. but in the real we just found white pillows and blankets !!

Airco shut off during the night, making the room too warm. The immediate area around the hotel isn’t very charming (partly due to roadworks), but it’s only a 15 minute walk from the city center so that’s no big deal.

Really comfortable rooms, the best nights sleep I've had for ages. Clean, well appointed and very spacious. Location is close to the railway and a short walk into the city through the shopping centre.

Breakfast was great! Room was really big and comfy. One of the best rooms I've stayed so far. The new idea of "do not disturb" and "clean my room" is really practical and handy. Also the room was very generous on the things it had.
