So beautiful and charming!

The apartment was in a good location, spacious and well stocked.
We asked for more towels but never got them. We had no access to ice. A microwave would have been very useful.

The hotel rooms are Royal. The location is fantastic directly at the channel. My room was on the street and I hardly felt the noise on a Tuesday. The details made the difference, taste in choosing furniture, the colors of the walls matching the sheets, and the wood work and even the vintage standing mirror. It's subtle classy and not screaming in your face sort of New-Money fancy. I had a genuine smile staying here. The lady at the reception desk was very friendly and she greeted us with tea at the really authentically nice lobby. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. The breakfast was majestic and the city is inspirationally pleasant. Great memory at a fantastic hotel.

Spacious apartment. Comfortable bed. Spa tub. Quiet (apart from a family above us). Washing machine and dryer were very convenient.
The apartment is in a separate building a few doors down from the hotel, so a bit of a disconnect. The walls are definitely in need of a repaint - chips and scuff marks in many places. TV was difficult to operate - rather than having apps you can sign into directly, you have to use chrome cast. We had to get help. There are NO windows, just two doors (apartment is like a bowling alley with french doors either end). To get air at night, we had to leave the rear door wide open. It opened to a courtyard but still felt a bit vulnerable. No air conditioning. Courtyard garden is definitely in need of some TLC - it could be spectacular but instead was unloved and weedy. We could hear everything in the apartment above us. Bike parking cost 5 Euros per night per bike.

Good breakfast. Nice welcome, not rushed which was nice as we arrived by bike.
Rather steep narrow Dutch staircase.

Peaceful canal setting, lovely room, good breakfast & super staff.
Bonnie on reception was especially friendly and helpful & arranged to get a bag of washing done for us.
We have been travelling for 7 weeks through Europe & this was the nicest hotel we have stopped in, pity our stay wasn't longer.
Could have had better lighting in the bedroom.

Such an amazing hotel on all accounts. The staff made sure all was in place in spite of a very late night check in. Thanks to their kindness and attention to details, they made this short stay very special. I look forward to returning to Leiden and staying at the Boutique Hotel Huys van Leyden for longer.

Great position on a canal. Lovely building, friendly helpful staff. Nice spot to have drinks outside from the hotel bar. Comfortable.
Thought the furnisher and furnishings in the bedroom were a bit cheap/basic for the style of the hotel. And it was expensive for that quality.

We stayed in a house along from the hotel. It was clean and comfortable, but a little more ordinary than the hotel rooms.

Visually the room and the hotel itself were a marvel. Chandeliers, paintings, wooden floors, you could practically feel the history. The staff was very nice and helpful and we had a lovely view of the canal.
The fact that it's a historical building has its disadvantages in the form of very steep stairs, with which we got acquainted intimately, as our room was on the top floor.

We enjoyed a very warm welcome with a beverage offered by the hotel. The receptionist was very welcoming and professional! The hotel itself is ideally located, it is absolutely beautiful and the room was superbe! We had a great stay here!

The room was small but beautiful and elegant, situated right on a canal. We walked everywhere.
It would be nice to see the rooftop patio fixed up for sitting outside.

Very comfortable bed
It's a pity that a lot of effort has been made to make the room lovely, but the bathroom is tiny and cramped, with a cheap fitout that doesn't go with the opulence of the room

Reception and restaurant spaces were beautiful. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was very good.
Our room was very small and the bathroom was accessed via a steep narrow staircase.

Nice breakfast. Sweet and helpful staff.
Our room at the Huys van Leyden was not only difficult to access, it was a fire trap. We were expected to climb two very steep, winding stairs (almost like ladders) with our luggage to the tippy top of the building where the view out one of the windows was a closeup of pipes on top of a roof. No way out in the event of a fire. If only for safety purposes, the owners should consider the well-being of their guests, not the extra money they might make. They should not expect guests to stay in such a dangerous location.

Complimentary drink on arrival. Fridge & coffee machine in bedroom.
V steep narrow steps from bathroom to bedroom.
A hazard
Although there was a rooftop outside seating area, it was not well maintained or inviting.

lovely traditional boutique style hotel with lots of character and very friendly, efficient staff. Excellent breakfast menu.
We stayed in what I could only call an attic room and the walk up the stairs (2 flights) was like climbing ladders and so narrow it was difficult to then also carry luggage. the room itself was a good size but the bed not particularly comfy and seemed to slope into the middle. The corner of the room where the safe was positioned was so dark you had to use a torch to work out how to use the safe. The room itself had no mirror so had to wait on the bathroom being free in order to get ready.

Our room was fabulous overlooking the canal - perfect!

This hotel is in a beautifully restored canal-side building. The decor is really lovely and the furnishing is tasteful. Our room had a view of the canal and was comfortable and well appointed.
On receiving our room key, we discovered that access to our first floor room was via a very narrow spiral staircase, with treads which were extremely small. We are both in our 80’s and needed to hold on to the handrails to negotiate these stairs, not easy when you are carrying your bags. There was no offer of assistance with our luggage when we booked in. The nature of this staircase prompted me to look for fire escape route signs on the corridor walls but these seem to be absent. A chart on our bedroom wall, however, showed the route as down the same narrow staircase that we had just ascended!
On returning to our room after our first day in the area, we were dismayed to find that it had not been serviced. When I queried this, the reply was that this was to save the planet. Cut costs more likely! If we were happy to have a holiday where we made our own bed, tidied our room and generally cleaned up we would have booked an Airbnb, not a boutique hotel.
Breakfasts were fine with a choice of continental or cooked. Strangely, hot food and coffee were served at your table but not tea. This was a DIY exercise where you were faced with a collection of teapots, various loose-leaf teas, a strainer/infuser and a jug of hot water. It was entertaining watching guests struggle to manage this process. Not the service one would expect from a highly-rated hotel.
