I met a nice guest at breakfast time. Night manager did what he could to improve a bad situation.
Hotel was dirty; was given the wrong room, which hadn't been cleaned, and was very dirty; hallways were dirty. New room was tiny. Breakfast was disappointing. Night manager was hanging around at breakfast and sort of trying to be helpful, but was really getting in the way, when I just wanted to be left alone to eat and check out.

Good for a 1 night quick trip where you are not staying in the room much.
The room was dated and felt like a hostel. Fire door by my room was insecure in the day and I felt the room wasn’t very secure

Really friendly staff, ideal location that's close to everything, especially the Oracle Centre. The room was ideal and great for the price.
The beds could've been softer, quite hard bed bases. The toilet was hard to flush and our shower didn't drain quickly but it was okay if you could wait 10 minutes in-between if there's two of you and it's not a long shower.

Staff were nice and friendly
I found the hot water to be quite chilly, and the shower controls were broken. On top of that, the hotel didn’t have enough signs, making it hard to locate the exit. The soundproofing in the rooms left a lot to be desired, and I barely managed to sleep due to the noise from the TVs in the other apartments.

No coffee, but otherwise fine, especially for the price.
For a cheap room it was very good value.

Unknown to us on booking , there was a DJ performing just below us and the music was so loud , it was louder than our TV volume. This continued until 12.30 am
Totally ruined our stay at the hotel. If we had known about this , we would have stayed elsewhere.

Room carpet, bed & linen appeared relatively new and as you would expect was well presented and clean.
Bathroom was disgustingly dirty, especially the shower cubicle, thick filth and mould in particular around the door opening. Stairwell to second floor was also appalling. See photos!

The building had its days. From the outside and upon entrance it's impressive. Friendly price and evening including breakfast. Walkable distance to the train station. The room and things in the room all looked old but functioning well. Happy to stay for a night with good heating and hot shower. The receptionist in the morning was quite attentative.
My room was on the top floor and there was no elevators, so be sure to check with the hotel if you want to avoid stairs. Hairs found on pillowcase and bed sheet. Wifi was not very robust. Breakfast is provided but have reasonable expectation based on what you pay.

Mouldy tiles in the bathroom

The main thing to recommend the hotel is the price. But the staff are also very nice. The young lady I dealt with on reception was delightful. (Sorry, I can't recall her name - it begins with an A.) She even came up to my room to help me find the TV remote control. The staff in the bar were also very attentive.
The WiFi didn't work at all in my room. Also, the sound proofing isn't great. I was probably unlucky that the guests in the room beside me had loud voices. But I did have to sleep with my noise cancelling earphones on.

Location was great and it was low cost, however it was evident why it was so cheap once there.
The room was very shabby, with peeling wallpaper and broken furniture. It was also very unclean, with stains on the sheets, the shower looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages (limescale on the glass, rotten sealant) and the window was covered in grease and hand prints. The towel provided was also only a hand towel so I went to reception to ask for a full size but there was nobody there, despite waiting around for ages and knocking on the glass. There was a sign to call but my phone was in my room. When booking it said towels provided and I would have bought my own had I known.
I stayed here once when it was known as Great Expectations and it was shabby then (although clean). I was led to believe that it had been refurbished since the acquisition however the room quality and cleanliness was worse than before.

I had the pleasure of staying at Hotel 1843 in Reading, UK, during an official visit to the University of Reading, and I was thoroughly impressed with the hotel's accommodation. The hotel's services and staff exceeded my expectations. The room was elegant and comfortable, and the breakfast spread was delicious and sumptuous.
The staff, especially the manager, were incredibly professional and attentive. Their warm hospitality made my stay feel truly special. The manager's attention to detail and willingness to accommodate requests was impressive.
Overall, Hotel 1843 is a gem in Reading. I'd highly recommend it for business or leisure travel. More than five stars for service, comfort, and professionalism.
Best wishes,

location was good - that was it
They obviously spent all their money on the bar and the bedrooms have been just left. The bathroom was covered in mould, chewing gum stuck to skirting boards and dusty. There is no lift, which cant be helped but it was very steep stairs.

Location and price
So hot! I was above a party night with music coming through until 12. Parts of the room and bathroom were not clean. Hole in the corridor carpet. Only 2 plug sockets which were on the opposite side of the room to the bed and no bedside lights. Bed had permanent grove in it.

The bath was great it was massive the bed was huge and very comfy. On arrival we were told we had been upgraded to the suite which was lovely, the reception staff were great so helpful and friendly and the man at the bar was great he knew exactly what drinks to advise us on
The bath had a soap holder which was dirty, the room was cold on arrival we had to leave the heating on all night. The bathroom is freezing with just a small heated towel rail to warm it up other than that our stay was good

Location was handy.
As with several other reviews, the accommodation is pretty tired. Not just on a cosmetic level, the issues do affect your ability to have a good stay, or sleep comfortably. The room was extremely basic for the cost. Unfortunately, the bed was uncomfortable, the rail in the wardrobe kept falling off and there was only 1 hanger. The message from the hotel after booking advised about the bar however didn’t mention karaoke on a Tuesday night. The tv didn’t work and mine wasn’t the only one. Requested it to be fixed and had no communication that it couldn’t be fixed. In my view, this isn’t about giving feedback during my stay, there’s a real need to upgrade. Or price accordingly so guests are clear about what they are getting.

Good location in Reading. Fairly large bed. Staff is friendly.
Quite a small room, could do with modernising. I shouldve listened to the reviews as the music was very loud at night and made getting to sleep very unpleasant. Breakfast was pretty basic and not the tastiest.
9.0 / 10.0
A great place to stay. The location is fine and the breakfast, continental type, is perfectly adequate.
Any noise from the bar/disco area is all gone by 00:00. A good sized room, en-suite, and quiet, as it was at the rear, warm and comfortable.
Sadly, I knocked a star off of my rating, as the room had not a single chair in it. Not impressed for such a large room too. Sorry.

The location was perfect, the breakfast very disappointing, boiled eggs toast cereal fruit coffee tea in cardboard cups, the gentleman on guard made no attempt to talk. The lady on reception gave us a voucher for the car park which turned out to be faulty we told her this but made no attempt to offer another ticket hence we had to pay £16.70 instead of £8.00,I messaged the hotel and asked for a refund they sent back and told us the car park was at fault we spoke to the manager and he advised us that the ticket was faulty there was no problem with the machine I messaged the hotel again to be ignored. The room we stayed in no 20 was tired looking with a burn stain on carpet also the teley didn't work and to access the room the stairs were horrific no lift we struggled with this, the lobby of an evening was freezing very uninviting. The carpets on the stairwell were thread bear and dangerous.
Most oif the overnight stay.

Nothing to complain about
5.0 / 10.0
It was clean and comfortable
It was very noisy, I could hear people moving about and using the hairdryer through the walls very early in the morning. The walls are clearly very thin and not well insulated. Breakfast is mediocre, mainly just toast, a bit of fruit and hot drinks.

Location is good
Room was tiny, outdated, unclean, with paper thin walls and poor ventilation. Bathroom barely functional, bed very uncomfortable, felt insecure and unsafe. Staff were not professional and barely spoke english. The entire place feels sketchy and in desperate need of refurbishment. Corridors were dark, musty, and had no lift. The breakfast was very limited and poor quality, and the staff watched over us and made us feel uncomfortable. They also shot the price up due to Reading festival, so we got scammed for the price.

The room was large, functional and comfortable.
