Istituto SS Salvatore

I knew going in that the Institute was owned by an order of nuns, so I expected it to be clean, modest, and minimal. To our surprise we were informed that breakfast was included. Rita, the receptionist was remarkably friendly and did just about everything there, including showing us to our room, a triple (due to the fact that all the doubles had already been booked). The breakfast had very little on offer, several types of fruit, yogurt, a few pastries, one cold cut, one type of cheese, a choice of 2-3 cereals, one type of bread, and coffee, served in a paper cup. In photos the double rooms were much smaller with wooden floors. We had 2 double beds and a tile floor. Unfortunately several of the tiles were cracked and uneven in both the bedroom and the very small, very old bathroom. I was happy to have brought my own slippers to avoid having to walk on them barefooted. The beds were comfortable, but the linens were very thin, including the blanket. I see a lot of room for improvement. The room was so spare and old that I didn't take photos The location made up for much of the above complaints, and Rita was a real asset to her employers. However, after seeing some short term rentals nearby on Booking.com that were full apartments with modern amenities at lower prices, I feel we overpaid for what we rented. Supporting the religious order was what motivated me with my choice. In retrospect, next time I'd chose one of the STR places and send a donation to the Instituto. There is plenty to see in Orvieto, and they have many good restaurants, but there is very little taxi service and no Uber, so make reservations for a taxi the day ahead of when you need it. I only saw 3 drivers in the 4 days I used them and 2 drove the same vehicle.

The white furniture in the room we had was inferior to the dark wood furniture that was shown for the double rooms. The cracked tiles should have been recemented to avoid accidental injury, and a heavier blanket would be a big improvement. If you want to serve food, at least use earthenware so the coffee stays warm. No breakfast at all may have been better. The last 2 photos show the back of the hotel and the view.

Walls are paper thin when it comes to sound . Talking on the phone even will wake up your next door guest.

It was an old convent but it was fine. Marita was so great that your overlooked the faults. ❤️
