The D Duck is in an ideal location. Just far enough up a hill to keep the crowds away.

Charming old property on a stunning location. Delicious and unusual breakfast. Very sweet staff. Great bathroom and very warm.
Everything was lovely

A great location with everything you want in such an establishment. The staff were friendly and helpful. Bar prices are not out of the way. The bar has a good buzz and good selection.
I have known the Duck for over 50 years and although I enjoyed our stay it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. The staff are great but things were beginning to slide a little. The access to the accommodation was weedy and the patio area was locked and overgrown. Repairs were wanting. The food was good but rather expensive. It was OK, but at the price , I wanted better.

This was a return visit after 15 years and we weren't disappointed. It's had a makeover and feels a bit less traditional and rustic than it used to - but the staff are friendly and efficient and standards are high. The room was cosy and the bed exceptionally comfortable, and we had a classic postcard vista of Helvellyn from the private seating area outside our room.
Just be aware that there's a strong emphasis on vegetarian dishes - don't build up your hopes for a breakfast fry-up, for example. The menu's imaginative but some of the plant based dishes can seem a little bland. And it's not cheap - but this is the Lakes.

Friendly and helpful staff Excellent food with an ethical slant...lots of vegetarian options as well as sustainable meat(venison)
No tea/coffee making in the room.

The room was clean and well decorated and furnished. Most of the staff were very amenable, and any requests such as an extra pillow or bottle of water were delivered almost immediately. The views of the distant fells (mountains) from the outside seating area in front of the property are magnificent.
THE FOOD! We are by no means "more is better" philistines, but were not expecting "sustainably sourced" Nouvelle Cuisine. A beautifully arranged little collection in the middle of a large plate. The write-up mentioned European and Traditional food, but the only "traditional" dish available was the side order of (very good) chips. Alas the 8.30 start breakfast is in the same vein - no bacon or croissants here, various bean concoctions with a fried egg. Sourdough toast the nearest thing to our breakfasts. On holiday we like a coffee after getting up, but no facilities are in the rooms. The advertised "free tea and coffee" in the rooms requires a call to reception to have it delivered - so you have to be dressed.

Lovely setting, nestling in the hills around The Lakes. The hotel was clean and comfortable, and there was no doubt that the staff/owners tried hard. However, some facilities and services were not up to the standard we have come to expect from hotels at this price:
Excellent food, all to a really high standard - the kitchen 'punches above its weight'
- Although described as a 'King Room' it was actually quite small ... but that is typical of hotels / inns of its age (1850s?)
- No tea & coffee facilities in the room. However, room service was very prompt when we asked for tea at 6:45am (The hotel said it was 'bizarre' (their word) that guests expect to be able to make tea/coffee in the room).
- No shower in the bathroom, just a handheld shower-head in the bath, with no shower curtain or screen.
- Only a tiny shelf for toiletries, so we had to put them on the floor … where they got very wet … because there’s no shower curtain/screen!
- Was it value for money? It was probably about 20-30% overpriced give the comments above re facilities/service. Would I stay there again? Maybe, but I would prefer to find somewhere that ‘ticked more boxes’ that the Drunken Duck did.

Location
We stayed for two nights in early March
Overpriced meals and drinks that are on a par with the London West End. Why?
We were allocated a substandard small bedroom and we needed to complain and get a larger room for our second night.
Not a patch on the quality boutique establishment that it used to be.
In summary, a real disappointment
