Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Urushitei

We enjoyed staying at this ryokan as it gave us a chance to experience a traditional Japanese-style stay in Kyoto. The futon beds were a little firm, but the staff were very accommodating and provided an extra mattress layer for each of us, which made them much more comfortable. I probably wouldn’t recommend this style of accommodation for elderly guests, as the futons are on the floor, which was difficult for my parents. One of our rooms was quite small, while the other was a good size. The bathroom was perfectly adequate. We paid extra to use the private bath, which was a lovely luxury and well worth it. We also really enjoyed wearing the traditional Japanese yukata provided during our stay. Overall, it was a memorable cultural experience with friendly, helpful staff.

A table top or some drawers added into the room would have been useful but obviously not traditional Japanese.

​We had an absolutely lovely time in Kyoto, made even more special by our stay at Sakura Urushitei. The hotel gave us the authentic, traditional Japanese experience we were looking for in a Ryokan. ​Everything was wonderful, from the comfortable futon beds and having our own private bath, to the clear instructions provided on the best places to visit and eat. The traditional Japanese breakfast was also wonderful. ​We would like to say a huge thank you to the staff for preparing a lovely little surprise for our honeymoon. A special mention must also go to Karuki-san, who was genuinely helpful and accommodating; she looked after us brilliantly from the moment we checked in until the day we checked out. We couldn't have been more pleased, and we hope to stay with them again one day.

The locations and the ambiance of the hotel

Hated the bed and pillows. As a couple you cannot push the two single bed together as it keeps slidding apart. The pillows were next to none. Management needs to review their bedding especially if you offer European bedrooms.
