This place is in a prime location in a stunning village position. It should offer a fabulous stay
It was tired, unkempt and our room was very disappointing for superior room. It hadn’t been maintained for some time and neither had it been cleaned recently. We didn’t see a member of staff once we were given keys.

Beautiful location, nice staff
The room just wasn't clean - there was a coating of dust on the headboard of the bed, the mugs were not properly clean, and the shower had black mould marks between the tiles. It didn't feel comfortable to stay in so we left early. It's a pity because it's in such a nice location, and the staff are friendly. They need to realise thr importance of properly cleaned rooms to guests - just changing the sheets isn't enough.

Location and Indian food good quality
Quality of service at breakfast, the full breakfast was cold. Plate freezing and beans stone cold. Cheep right bread. The person who served was wearing same shirt as the night before, creased and yawning several times.

The staff were really fantastic. The location was great. The food for breakfast was delicious and served really quickly with great service.
We had the family bed which is advertised as a double bed and two single beds, but the double bed was two single fold out camp beds pushed together so had a bit split down the middle so we were really uncomfortable. The two single beds were also fold out camp beds. Just would have been good to know in advance.

The location.
I booked this as a night away after a nice country walk and we checked in late afternoon after a couple of drinks in the bar. The first impression was that the room was not clean but we were wet, cold and tired so didn't complain. We ate somewhere else that evening and when they asked if we had far to travel we told them where we were staying to which they replied oh dear, after a short conversation we were told the current owners were leaving and it was meant to have closed in January but they are staying open until April now and I think they have made a mistake as it should be closed as they have clearly given up, upon returning we headed straight to bed.
At the time we didn't want to complain as like I mentioned we were cold, wet and tired. At check in we had to ask the bar staff and they called a member of staff on the phone to get us our key and show us to our room. We were given an electric heater as the room was ice cold.
Once we unpacked and saw how unclean it was we were going to complain but it was busy in the bar area and no one was at reception. We didn't want to make a fuss in a busy bar area so decided to keep quiet as we were only there for one night.
We paid just under £100 with a discount for bed and breakfast.
We did have a look online on the night as we considered leaving but there wasn't anything available within the village and we had already had some drinks so we're unable to drive.
The bathroom was disgusting and clearly hadn't been cleaned at all. Toothpaste all over the taps and glasses, cobwebs hanging by the shower and mould all around the seals and grout was very discoloured. An attempt to fix was a strip of stick on sealant. Four spotlights of which only one was working.
In the main room the carpet was very stained as well as mark's all over the walls, the dressing table/coffee making area had ring marks from previous guests and a filthy bin was on the floor beside it.
2.0 / 10.0
The location of the hotel. Also, the room was warm and was dog friendly.
The furniture and decor of the room was old fashioned, poor quality and mismatched. The bed mattress was tired, sagging in the middle and not supportive. The bedding / duvet cover and pillow cases was inferior quality and did not fit properly. The wardrobe was filled with rubbish and old Christmas decorations. The shower water pressure was poor and it took ages for the water to warm up. The tea and coffee making facilities were limited and not replenished during our stay. The room smelt damp and fusty and the lighting was poor. We felt that the overnight stay was not value for money. The hotel overall seemed very tired, scruffy and needed money spent on it to bring it up to standard. When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by a number of staff who did not seem to have a clue what to do and were even struggling to light a woodburning stove in the main bar area. They had oversized pieces of planks of pine wood (not logs) sticking out of the grate trying to light it and was filling the room with smoke, as though they had never lit a fire before. Very disappointed.

We only got one option for breakfast which was Full English. We weren't offered cereals, juices, fruit etc
The cleanliness in the room wasn't great and it was a very small room, more options for breakfast would have been good

Location is great and parking is very convenient.
Staff were very polite.
Needs a good clean.
Huge build up of cobwebs.
Very cheap furnishings and ornaments were very sparce. Carpets are threadbare. Window doesn't close fully and rattles in the wind.
Didn't realise it had changed to an Indian restaurant.

Very local to eBay we wanted to do and the village was lovely
The property was filthy very dated and didn’t smell great.
4.0 / 10.0
The history of the building and quirky lay out.
All the mirrors in the bedroom and bathroom were very dirty, couldn't really use them.
Breakfast was possibly the worst we had ever had. Pork sausage and bacon were stone cold, and as anyone knows, this can make you very ill. The temperature should have been checked before serving. To which most of the breakfast was left. it looked like it was made hours previously and then served up. The egg looked like it had been dehydrated and over cooked, possibly from the day before it was that bad. The only thing that was fresh was a piece of toast.
The lady who served us, no offence to her, but she was sitting in the bar area with a big woolly hat on that she obviously wore out doors then went into the kitchen to fetch our breakfast, served us still wearing the hat, then upon leaving was seen cleaning the bedrooms still wearing the hat in question, so obviously hygiene is very questionable, you can't do that, when serving or preparing food, for the public there's certain standards that you have to have. If one person gets ill and complains, I imagine the kitchens would be shut down. No training could have been given.

Good full English breakfast
The bed was ok but not very comfortable

The Bar and staff where very friendly.
This is not a 4 star property! 2 star or at a push a 3 star.
The staff were lovely but the room and bathroom was very out dated.
The bathroom was not clean especially around the shower area in the bath with mould.
Old dirty carpets and very worn paint work throughout.
Also the hotel is a Indian restaurant which is not stated on booking.
If you don't mind your room smelling of curry every evening and early mornings for some reason then its for you.
Quite disappointed for the money I paid, nearly £100 a night.

Location was excellent - I didn't take breakfast.
Checking in was slow and seemed rather disorganised but I understand the hotel was in new hands so likely just a settling in issue.

All Indian food on an evening and no breakfast available, WiFi was poor

Friendly staff welcomed us to this picturesque old hotel. The room was warm and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was hearty and good value for money.
We also ate in the restaurant, in the evening, and enjoyed the food as well as the atmosphere.
If you are hiking around about, it is a good place to stay.
The wall between our room and the next was a little thin... or perhaps the guest next door was very loud!
No WiFi upstairs, but it was free and worked downstairs in the bar/restaurant.

Location was good
Everything could have been better. We booked for two nights and if we had not been so tired we would not have even stayed the first night. The room was very cold with a direct draft from the window onto the bed and the radiator only worked for an hour, the bed extremely uncomfortable where the mattress had collapsed in places, the carpet was filthy, the shower had mould on it - there was noise until 2am from some machine/extractor system. The food is not traditional British it is an Indian restaurant. This is the worst hotel I have every stayed at and I am amazed that it is on Booking.com

A superb looking building, in the perfect location to enjoy the Dales, with great views and all around.
Under new management, with the staff all very friendly.
The property itself is run down, seems shabby and uncared for, and sadly (whilst I love a curry), the restaurant smell has filtered into every corner of the property. Not really the fresh Derbyshire smell I envisaged waking up to.
We paid extra for breakfast- which was like having your kids cook for you, everything cold
and in disarray.

i liked the all around vibe of the place, it was very cosy and i felt safe at all times, the staff were very lovely and always willing to help, they let us check out whenever we wanted cause it wasn’t busy that day which we really appreciated, the food was honestly amazing (the chicken burger tasted like original chicken big mac recipe FIRE), the rooms were cosy and clean and the beds were comfy, the room even came with a little room heater incase you got cold which i thought was sweet, it wasn’t missing smithing anyway, i also like how the bar/restaurant area downstairs had a tv and board games, me and my boyfriend were down there for 2 hours playing chess, (i don’t win a single time), the fairy lights there gave it a cosy feel too, parking was good too can’t complain.
there are only a couple bad things, firstly the curtains are not blackout which for a light sleeper like me wasn’t great, however when it got light i just put the blanket they give you over the window and that darkens the room quite nicely, second the windows are also not double glazed i don’t think because we could hear the outside pretty well, a couple times i thought the window was open but it wasn’t, this wasn’t really a problem though i think it only woke me up once because it gets quiet at night anyway, third thing is the floors at some spots are creaky which didn’t bother us but i can imagine can be quite annoying for people below us, we didn’t have anyone above us as we were on the top floor so i can’t speak n that im just assuming it would be annoying, thats all.

Breakfast ok but no choice available, only full English
Hotel is in a very old building, somewhat run down, in need of some repairs and renovation. Looks like owners struggling to keep the business going. A lot of other pubs/ hotels in area have closed

Bed was comfortable.
Bedroom was cold on arrival. It did warm up but the radiator never really got warm.
Mattress and/or bed sheet were bobbly.
It was difficult to gain access on arrival. The front door was locked with a PIN code.

The food was ok and reasonable value for money. Most of the staff were friendly.
Very grubby room. Several weeks of dust on top of the headboard. The floor was really dirty. Most of the staff were fine and friendly. One particular individual shuffled around with his hands in his pockets and actually took a mobile phone call half way through taking our dinner order.

Great location and cosy hotel. Lovely staff and the bar has a great selection of beers. We didn’t eat at the hotel as we had had Indian the previous night but it smelt amazing and everyone had empty plates in the dining room! If we came back, we would be sure to try the food. Great location just a shame that the weather was very wet so we couldn’t do the walks we wanted to do but it was a peaceful and relaxing weekend nonetheless
Hotel rooms a bit tired and could do with some love but on the whole, very comfortable and good price.

Staff were very friendly & helpful. The Indian restaurant was excellent; delicious curry! Great location in the centre of the village. Large car park.
The hotel was a bit grubby & there was a musty smell at the bottom of the stairs. There were streaky mirrors everywhere that needed polishing. The hotel had recently been taken over after being closed for a long period, so the new owners were in the process of improving it.
4.0 / 10.0
It was well located and had free parking
The hotel needs a lot of money spending on it to make it more comfortable , cleaner and more up to date , however it did provide us with a good nights sleep and the village of Hartington was lovely . Hopefully the owners will be able to invest time and money on in the property as it has a lot of potential

Nice comfy old style hotel serving excellent Indian food with very friendly and attentive staff. Tea & coffee. Good TV service.
Upstairs shabby; repaint badly needed. Bedroom new frames still unpainted. Bathroom seal surround needs renewing and cleaning, bedroom carpet badly marked/needs shampooing.
TV remote needs new batteries
WiFi in bedroom didn't work in the evening
Mattress not supportive at the sides

The Indian restaurant served very good food.
The whole building was in need of some major refurbishment. Peeling paintwork, grubby carpets, generally run down as a hotel.
There was no reception area, anyone from outside had easy access to the building, our room door would not lock and, frighteningly, the fire doors were propped open all of the time, we were worried about safety and fire issues. We ordered a breakfast for 8:30 but no one was about to cook it when we went down at 8:45 and nobody appeared after 15 mins of waiting.
We went somewhere else!!
I think the hotel seemed to be two separate items.... the Indian restaurant side was very good, but the hotel part was abysmal.

The location and the room size
Thought it was overpriced and there seemed to be a lack of staff, bar was always empty of staff, no one on reception
6.0 / 10.0
A new management team are still getting to grips with running a hotel, bar and restaurant - some cleanliness issues but a working progress. Quite a bit of damp which could be smelled around the hotel, especially in the landings. All that said very nice staff and we would return again.

The hotel had an unusual smell and was very dated and dirty
5.0 / 10.0
First, the staff were unfailingly kind and helpful, and allowed me to extend my stay by a further night for no extra charge after I’d had to spend the previous night in hospital. My hotel room was comfortable, but provision of facilities was rather haphazard. The new management may be concentrating rather on the bar and Indian restaurant side of the business, which appeared to be thriving and appreciated by customers.
