Historical location and vibe. Close to good food and bars.
Nothing. I know the area well so my expectations were met.

Comfy bed and good shower pressure
The place was dirty, tired, run down, very basic, had minimum facilities, lacked electrical sockets, and was overall not good value for money

Great view of Mangonui harbour
We were not given enough toilet paper. The hand basin was falling off the wall. The shower was grotty and the bed was too spongey. Lots of noise and nonsense in the immediate area too.

The location
Very poor customer service. I went to the reception and was met by I presume the bar manager, I said hello and that I had a room booked.
No greeting back or hello, just a stone faced reply
NAME,
told her my name,
No you haven’t got a booking!
so I showed her my email confirmation.
No your name isn’t in the book!
We’ll have you another room?
Yes but not at that price!
Ok I’ll pay extra I said.
Got a room, but the hotel is tired and needs a revamp.

We loved the location and the veranda, overlooking the harbour. It was nice to sit out there and eat breakfast or dinner. It was convenient to have the bar downstairs. And Aurora the parrot in the bar was very entertaining.
The hotel is for sale and is badly in need of a makeover — a great opportunity for someone. The carpets are threadbare on the stairs and needed cleaning. The “kitchen” is basically a closet but the fridge and microwave worked well. No room for real cooking.

Dirty, grimy room, unvacuumed floor, stains on mattress base; sullen uncommunicative staff; no response to request for proper invoice rather than eftpos receipt with GST number written on back. Dirty floors in shared bathroom. Carpet worn throughout hotel, unpleasant musty odours.

Iconic historic hotel which was clean and comfortable. Nice balcony with a view of the sea. Our room was comfortable and clean.
It was a very hot evening and although there was a fan in the room, it would have been better with an air con unit. Because of the heat, we had the window open and the punters at the bar below were pretty rowdy.

Location was exceptional. Doors to balcony was fantastic
Big stain on carpet

The location is fabulous, vibrant coastal town with great cafes, wine bars and restaurants. We had a rear room so views non existent, however we were 5 paces away and could sit on the hotels verandah and sip a beer or wine which was awesome. We saw 3 small orcas in bay which was incredible.
The hotel is tired, up for sale and in need of some love and attention, but the price reflects that, rooms were clean, bed comfortable and views from verandah amazing.
Small kitchenette with some basics down the hallway if you want to make a cuppa, sadly no fridge/ tea / coffee making facilities in room
The wine and whiskey bar next door and cafe two door down were awesome
Dated/ tired- but clean
Need fridge and tea/ coffee making facilities in room
Quite bluntly staff were not interested in letting us know if room would be ready earlier , Very strict on 2pm check in - not sure why- when a room has been cleaned - surely it’s available

Only the weather we dont like when we stayed there its windy and shower.

Location was good, nice view of the harbor outside the hotel
Had originally booked a queen room, which mentions to have a large double bed and a double bed, but upon arrival, there was only one double bed in the room with 2 single mattresses stacked at the side of the room (no sheets).
Cleanliness of the rooms and bathrooms were not the best either. Could do much better!

I loved the authentic experience of a country pub. The upstairs accommodation with the front verandah has amasing views.
Great place to sit watching life go past.

It’s a bit tired

This hotel is old fashioned which is fine. But it’s very tired. That said it’s very cheap. Should be perfect
For backpackers as the location is very nice
It’s just very tired and needs a refresh

Great location
Rooms very tired
Kitchen for tea making very disorganised - no milk, fridge dead , no clean cups
5.0 / 10.0
Great view from the upstairs balcony
Pretty tired decor, cobwebs and spiders in the bathroom

Location beautiful great view
Clean cups in the kitchen

Our room opening onto the verandah and the view from there and from the room.
Very clean bedlinen and towels
My pet hate…no mattress protector which means potential sweat and body fluids easily pass through the sheet into the unchanged electric blanket (the hard ridges of it being annoyingly evident). A mattress protector is essential directly under the bottom sheet and should be changed after each guest. Dirty looking carpet with threadbare areas
No power point in the bathroom. No hairdryer..usually a basic essential.
The place is tired and tatty

Better heating.

Great location, staff were great, food was even better. Value for money if you just need a bed.
Happy that the single room was only small, but it probably needs the curtains to be cleaned as they literally rest on your head when you sleep. There weren't any drawers, which isn't a problem, however, a couple of hooks on the door or walls to hang a jacket or two would be nice. Overall, it was really good.

This is a real old-fashioned hotel and was exactly as we thought it would be! It was clean and cosy. Great place to stay! Staff are warm & friendly; We loved eating our breakfast on the balcony! It was cold outside but the heater was perfect! Cosy bed and cosy room. Perfect location! I was expecting more noise from the bar below, but actually, everything went quiet early.
Nothing to add - it was all great!

Location was great and it was quiet during the night. Loved getting up to see the water and boats.
Carpet to rooms threadbare and shabby, room old with holes and paint worn everywhere, mould in the cracks in the shower, electric blankets on beds but nowhere to plug them in. Door to go outside with the window covered by a shower curtain for goodness sake.

The location of this hotel is great - the bar staff member that booked us in was lovely and extremely helpful, but we didn't end up staying as it was not up to standard.
The facilities are not great. Very tired & dated and has 1 power point which the TV is plugged into. Might be ok in summer - but in winter not being able to use the heater or electric blankets (and that would be only 1 at a time) it did not work for us. The bar staff member was super helpful trying to sort us with extension cords, but in the end, I asked for a refund, which she happily obliged and we found somewhere else to stay.

The view. The Privacy. The balcony to look out over the harbour. Kai - pizza from Js, Hangi and kina from 4 Square. The manu, taiao. Warm showers. Warm Room. Was lovely. Definitely recommend others. If I come again definitely want the Queen Suite. Everything close walking distance.😁
No wine glasses in kitchen. If you got the decor updated - carpets on stairs you could charge more. Seats and tables outside need ashtrays. Not all outside lights worked. (Didnt mind) can see more of the harbour.

Very affordable price
Dirty little room, wallpaper was coming off the walls. Room directly above pub, it was very noisy until late at night. Definitely not suitable for someone passing through and coming here to sleep

The location is always beautiful.
3 hours of witnessing a horribly managed pub WITH youngster fighting & smashing Pub Windows ,swearing & cursing at us and other customers.
No sleep , had blood all over my car , police & Abulances .
very unorganized Hotel.
Booked sea view queen room , heater didn't work NO TV remote , shower was horrible , DIRTY with a build up of Hair & thick layer of GRIME half used toilet paper & Nothing else .
Wasn't even treated like a customer.
I will be going higher am appealed actually
Photos of rooms shower & broken out door furniture, not even a tv remote.
blood on my car boot , bonnet & side of my vehicle .
Management ask us to leave first thing in the morning with incident finishing at 2am.
I'm 6 months pregnant & disgraced I feel super depressed.

It was OK. The linen was clean. So was the room. Handy having the bar downstairs. Good outdoor space. Had beautiful views outside of the water while outside. Secure upstairs area for staying guests.
It's ok but a little rundown. Didn't get any sea view from the bedroom. No tea making facility in the room.

The room simple with single bed and a night stand
Room was cold

Was just as expected. In the centre so ideal.
Noise was not an issue considering how busy the place was.
6.0 / 10.0
Room was basic and very small, but OK for what I needed, and pretty much as I expected. Tea/coffee making facilities and use of fridge in shared area was appreciated.
Bed coverings needed cleaning. But my main issue is this: I came to the area to take care of some personal business. Due to the impending arrival of a cyclone AND the fact that I would be able to finish my business a bit early, I messaged the hotel on the evening of my first night asking if they would consider a refund for the second night if I were to check out early. They agreed, saying that they would deposit the money into my account. I checked out at 07.30am the next day. I've sent several reminders but refund is not forthcoming. I wouldn't have minded if they just said no to the refund as I would have spent some time with my neices in the area instead, but they did say that they would refund (several times) so I left. This side of things has been disappointing.
