We had a pleasant stay at Hotel Kagetsuen. The location was convenient for exploring the Hakone area, and the peaceful surroundings made it a nice place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The onsen was a lovely bonus, especially after all the travelling. Overall, it was a comfortable stay and a good base for exploring Hakone.

The private onsens were nice, even though they were very old. We really liked them. Our room was exceptional and we were very comfortable. The breakfast was nice with a large selection. It would be nice to have a better selection of freshly prepared hot food.
There really was nothing to not like. The outside of the hotel on the back side could use repairs and a new paint job. We walked around and noticed that they need a cleanup on the back side by the trees,

At first it seems far but it is really near the main attraction of Hakone. Awesome nature around. A place to relax and enjoy nature.
If you like shopping and restaurant near you. This is not the place.

Staff was very friendly and helpful, location is amazing if you want a peaceful spot. Get Hakone Free Pass to use the local buses for free as well. Few but good restaurants within walking distance, Lake Ashi is also walking distance. Grocery store is only about 3 bus stops away, too. From the bus stop you can see Mt Fuji on a clear day and the area is wonderfully quiet and green!
All the linen had a bit of a weird smell. Cleanliness was ok but the hotel is quite dated and there were some mouldy spots in the bathroom and stains on the walls of our room. I just wished it were a bit more looked after.
