Unwelcoming host and smelly room

The location is great, it was about 15 minutes of walking to the train station. This was the main reason why I chose this location.

It started with checking in. I arrived at the door, which was closed and no bell. So I called the contact number, someone not able to speak English picked up, gave the phone to someone else and she said "he'll be there soon". It then took a good 25 minutes before a man arrived. He didn't even say hello, just opened the door for me and when we were upstairs he said that I had to pay in cash even though he had my card details through booking. I thus had to go out to get cash. After I gave him the cash he showed me the room, didn't give me a key, it was in the door I found out later. His English was bad so he told me through Google translate where to leave the key when checking out and then said "okay bye" and left. I did not feel welcome at all, I really felt like I was bothering him. The room was clean in general but there was a very strange smell, a bit like sewage, especially in the bathroom. It was not nice. The bathroom got all wet when showering because there was no shower curtain and there were weird stains on furniture and walls. The neighbourhood was not that pleasant either, but I think that's just Craiova in general. It was an overnight stop for me, so it was fine-ish but I really have no idea why this place has an 8/10 on Booking.

Fair value for the price. The owner was helpful. Nicely decorated and the furniture is all OK. Fine for an overnight stop.

The twin room was small and had a slight smell of sewage. The shower floods the bathroom.

Pleasant

Room was big enough for even three people. Wifi was good. AC, fridge, comfortable big bed, washroom was very good too ..... Location. Next to a supermarket, there were also some places to eat and drink around. Not so far from the train station but little bit further from city center.

There was no one at the reception even though they requested ETA beforehand. When the receptionist came, he wasn't speaking any English, didn't show me anything, didn't hand me the key... Nothing. Just cashed in the money and said the number of the room (in Romanian) and left very quickly. You can't leave the building without the key. That's an fire/emergency hazard at least. Also I didn't get how can you leave and where to put the key .. The room appeared clean at the first sight but there were lot of stains on the carpet and such .. Also, the neighborhood is not pleasant nor safe (but I'm afraid that's just Craiova in general).

Very good overall

We stayed 4 nights. Communication with the host was excellent. When the TV didn't work properly, it was replaced quickly, which was really wonderful.

The room was a loft, so the window was very high up in the ceiling; it took some effort and a special tool to get it opened. This can't be changed, though.

Second floor accommodation near to Craiova station

The hotel is roughly ten minutes walk from Craiova station, which was relatively easy to find thanks to google maps. A doorway next to a convenience store leads to the reception which is two floors above ground level. The room was spacious enough and ensuite, the bed comfortable, and contained everything I needed for a one night stay.

The check-in experience wasn't ideal, but my inability to speak Romanian made it more difficult. Check-out is supposed to involve dropping the key at the convenience store next door which is open from 7am Mon-Sat, and 8am Sunday, with neither establishment having a letter box. Other than that very minor challenge, a comfortable place to stay, and good value for money.

Room was big enough. AC worked great and silently. Had a couch that was comfy. Location is close to most of things in the city and it has a mini-market right under the hotel.

Constant strange smell felt in the room. If you stay inside, you're getting used to it, but if you're getting out and coming back, you'll always feel that strange smell (sewers probably) Fridge made a strange noise when it's freezing motors were running. Bathroom was missing a shower curtain and hangers for towels. Room gave a feeling of 'grandma's house' with old furniture and bad lighting and really few sockets.
