Central location
The hot water system went very hot then cold then warm, again and again. I mentioned it twice but nothing changed.
Given the hotel's history it's a shame that a proper history brochure is not available, or its history advertised

Comfortable and an easy stay.
A couple of nice staff members but a couple of brusk, uninterested staff members. Perhaps not in the right career!

The breakfast was standard and cooked well. A better choice of hot drinks would be good. The location was great for us - everything in walking distance. There are 2 reasons why I have rated this experience lower than I should have liked: 1. Nobody explained to us that it was a pay-as-you-go arrangement. Had they done so, an embarrassing (for me) situation would have been avoided.
The other reason was far more irksome and concerned the hotel’s owners - Marston’s. I received a number of aggressively demanding communications from them regarding check-in and check-out. In addition, there was a problem with the check-in link, so I asked the hotel if it was ok to check in on arrival - which it was. I checked out in person as well. I simply ignored all the emails from Marstons in the end. Regarding this issue, the hotel was pleasant and helpful. Overall the stay was decent and I would be happy to stay there again.
