Great stay with amazing staff

The location was perfect for our hike up seathwaite fell. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful and polite. This is the 2nd YHA hostel I've stayed in and can safely say I'm converted. The borrowdale hostel is magnificent and a right trip down history lane!

The only thing that let it down was the price £65 for 1 night is the same as a hotel. Probably didn't help that it was half term and is normal for businesses to increase prices during those times. But it was worth it in the end due to the location.

Easy peasy

Friendly staff from the beginning of the stay till the end. I had a chance to buy a Gluten-free products and enjoy a Gluten-free breakfast. Facilities were good. Dry room. Location: easy to reach other locations of interests.

Staff excellent, location perfect. Bar great and cosy.

It's a yha so you know what to expect. This one is getting a little tired but we don't mind that. Be nice if they had a little fire or something in the main room as its not as cosy as the bar area.

Better than i had expected

Really nice and freindly staff, very welcoming, paid for a cabin tent, very cleqn and warm, extreamly quiet at night, food out of the kitchen was great, and reasonably priced. Just good vibes on our stay.

Not much sleep

Location, staff, typical hostel

Strange decision to have hand dryers in the toilets. They were right next to my room so all night people felt the need to blast the hand dryers which kept me awake - guess it’s not the hostels problem but the thoughtless people 🤣

Approach road really needs some work. Radiator in our room wouldn’t come on and both handles in one of the windows had snapped off, so it could only be closed over - from the outside. Not ideal when temperatures dropped to sub zero in the night.

Good value - relatively cheap room which provided comfort and key basic facilities during our coast to coast hike. Friendly, helpful personel. Friendly, holiday atmostphere in the bar/eating area.

The room was very hot. The bed lights are very bright and wake up other people in the room if used during the night.

Friendly team, great location, comfy room

All the team were really nice, the girl who checked us in was helpful and friendly. Big kudos to the guy on reception with long hair who was dealing with an awkward customer when we were checking in, he had the patience of a saint. Shout out to the Scottish chef too who had loads of food checks on but was still smiley. The room was comfortable and way more spacious than I expected. Bathroom facilities were plentiful and clean.

Could be more tables and chairs in the dining area, breakfast was busy!

I loved the decor and the cosy feel to living room, bar area. The communal kitchen was an excellent facility.

I understand it's a YHA, but for the price of the room it was appalling. Prison cells have more facilities.

Average stay

We enjoyed the check-in and out process, the bed was more comfortable than expected, my child enjoyed that there was a games room. Parking was easy.

The bar/restaurant/games room could've been more clean. Not everything worked in the games room. The road leading to the YHA was very narrow and full of pot holes. We were unable to close the window in the bedroom.

Lovely gem of a hostel. Definitely worth the money!

Location - love the stream running in the side of the hostel, the picturesque location, mountain access. Breakfast - superb! We paid extra for a hot breakfast and it's amazing - tasty and complete choice for English breakfast (apart from black pudding which I don't eat anyway) Room - clean and comfy (just what we all need) Kitchen staff - lovely, smiley people and always very accommodating.

Don't get me wrong, we love the place and we will definitely stay again in the near future - my only observation is that the place needs a bit of refurbishing and maintenance work -- that is all. :-) Game room - needs fixing and updating (we need to get some game, toys or boardgame donations). Despite this, my little one loves this room. Just to be aware (which isn't YHA Borrowdale's fault by the way if I may add). The council needs to fix the road leading to the hostel as the potholes are soooooo bad.

Terrible access, pot holed road, not welcoming by staff. Drive home that night to avoid staying!

We waited 25 mins at check in desk for a moment of staff then went to room and lights didn’t work. Very noisy from bar area below and our 10 year old didn’t feel comfortable - not a family friendly hostel, she was only person under about 25 years old. Very bad smell outside of rancid blocked drains

Family walking weekend break

The place and location was perfect for our needs. Showers were good. Nice bar area for relaxing.

The plastic covered mattress made you sweat. The road in was only wide enough for one vehicle and full of deep pot holes. Unfortunately we had a power cut that lasted 10 hours over night with no back up plan, there was no food or bar service, I thought that there would have been a back up plan in place, generator and cash option etc?

Good night sleep with an excellent english breakfast and the Coast to Coast walk passing the door.

Staff were excellent especially Rosie who was kind enough to give us a lift to the hostel when she came across about 2 miles up the road from the hostel. Although we had booked a room for 2 people (2 bunks) we were give a room for 4 which had plenty of space for us. The basin in the room was a bonus. Excellent full english breakfast in the morning. Well equipped kitchen for self catering.

The bar ran out of draft lager and there wasn't anyone able to change the barrel. The bottle of 7 Up would have been more enjoyable if served cold.

Great place and comfortable vibes. Loved that there was a nice bar area and good opportunities to socialise. Also, on a good route to climb scafell pike via the corridor route.

nice bar. drank 4 pits of water after 5 on the trail that hot day.

bunk beds not long enough. in a room myself with 4 and had to put 2 on the floor to sleep on. no coffee at brekkast. plus i'd bought a ticket for brekkast but guy at counter didn't believe me and i had to wait and watch huge queue of school kids get served before me before they got their paperwork in order. thanks for that!
