We went to Beaulieu to celebrate my husband’s birthday at the Beaulieu museum. We opted to stay at Montague Arms because the review was excellent. And whilst it was overpriced , we thought why not. Here’s what we think of this place. Pro: 1) Location to my husband’s birthday celebration was great, walking distance to and pro. 2) Staff were great, not exceptional however. 3) Parking is free and garden is great. 4) Breakfast was okay. It’s continental- if you wish to have hot meals then you pay extra like we did. Con: 1) We stayed in Room 12- The Oak room. First impression, carpet was so stained and dirty. Room was oven heated even though the windows facing the road were open. The room also had a musky smell. 2) Even with the small desk fan provided- and windows open: the room was extremely hot. 3) Amenities are also very basic. No fridge at all. The room decor is outdated and the bathroom was so hot as there was a built in towel rack which was piling hot. There was a bath tub but there was no bath liquid soap provided . So we did not use the bath tub after a long day at Beaulieu museum. 4) The bed was extremely uncomfortable. Mattress was extremely soft and as you lie on it, it sinks to the bottom of the mattress, hitting the bed-frame so low that it was really uncomfortable. Needless to say, it was a long night as the room was so hot- this is us keeping the window open till we check out. 6) The shower floods so much that the entire bathroom floor became so wet, we had to use all the towels to avoid slipping on the floor. The shower room was also congealed with black spots- pictures attached. It made us uncomfortable as we felt Like they were molds. 5) Restaurant: The Terrace. First impression was impressive but when the waiter came to take our orders- no greetings nothing. Worst did not even ask if we had any allergies- and this guy is supposed to be the manager. Food wise, again pricey, We ordered starters, main and dessert. Firstly starter- Cauliflower with saffron- and we had to make a comment as what they basically served was a fried cauliflower doused in mustard and mayo sauce. No hint of saffron at all. It was okay. We ordered the rack of lamb and chicken breast with potatoes. These were nice but the portion was rather small. For me the ultimate disappointments was the mille-feuille chocolate caramel and raspberry sorbet- There was no mille-feuille at all, instead they used a short bread and there was no sorbet, they serve a vanilla ice cream- and this is me saying I am latoce intolerant. I am disappointed because it was my husband’s dinner celebration. Although the restaurant made up for all the fiasco, by giving my husband a plate with a greeting, I think the entire experience was just okay. It could have been better. We want to go back to Beaulieu but there is no way we will stay again at all Montague Arms- we will rather drive to Southampton and stay there.
