Dirty, Flea Ridden!

Photos on Booking.com do not reflect the inside of the cottage at all. It states Log Burner, that has been boarded up with a tatty piece of white MDF and according to previous reviews has been like this for over 3 years. Kitchen so tiny, you cannot get 2 people in there. Microwave on a window sill 5ft in the air, that my Wife cant reach, a child's toilet step was left in the kitchen by the microwave. Only a child, is of the weight to actually stand safely on this. Oven door does not shut. Tv didn't work. Bathroom was dirty, Barbecue facilities, non existent!! Big stain on the sofa. Bedroom furniture, the bed was nice but the rest of the furniture looked like it had been rescued from a 1950s house. Sloping floor in bedroom was quirky, admittedly. Windows extremely hard to open, if you could actually open them it took a week to shut them again as they didn't fit! Having been in the cottage for a few days, both my Wife and I became extremely itchy, as did our 2 Spaniels. The dogs were very uncomfortable, so took them to the local Vets. They had a flea infestation, the cottage was full of fleas. My Dogs were groomed 48 hours before coming away as it was my Wife and Is wedding, we wanted them to look smart in the photos. No fleas on them at all!! The local Vets were very interested in the flea issues as they were very mature fleas, meaning they had been thriving in that property for some time. Having got meds to treat my Girls, I then fumigated the cottage with Indorex spray, 2 cans from Northam Vets at £38 per can, this is on top of the £114 bill I paid for my Dogs to be treated. I had to fumigate my Car, our clothing. There were even fleas in the drawers nestling into our socks and underwear. The mat in the toilet was literally crawling with fleas. This trip was our Honeymoon!

Quaint cottage needing a bit of TLC

Location OK and near to the main car park just a walk away. Outside seating space that could do with a really good clean

The cottage is in need of an update with some renovation. Remodel the kitchen and bathroom. Take the bath out and just put in a shower. We ate out, so did not use the kitchen. We still cleaned the place before we left.

Lovely, quirky little cottage.

We loved The Retreat. It is a quirky little cottage, with many original features, not overly modernised, and is perfectly situated to explore Appledore and beyond. It is tucked away up an alleyway with its own private courtyard, perfect for sitting out. Even in August, we were able to find on road parking but the nearby carpark is free from 6pm to 8pm. A stroll down Irsha Street takes you to the lifeboat station and beyond, along the coast path, perfect for watching the sun go down and it is only a very short walk to The Quay and shops. I am local to the area and wouldn't think twice about booking The Retreat again.

Whilst it didn't bother us (we don't go on holiday to spend hours in the kitchen), the kitchen is very small but that said, it is very well equipped.

Perfect location and quaint little cottage

The location was absolutely perfect. The small but lovely enclosed courtyard was also great. Although everything in the cottage was basic, it had all that I needed.

I didn’t like the look of the boarded up fireplace, it spoiled the look of the otherwise nice living room.

Quaint old cottage near the quay

Good location close to the Quay. Quaint interior. Good Wi-Fi once discovering how to switch it on.

Low ceilings uncomfortable for anyone tall. Bathroom a bit old with shower not easily controlled. Tiny kitchen (rightly called “Galley”).

Cosy, private, quiet, peaceful, comfortable & fantastic location. Great communication with hosts. Sunny courtyard.

Nothing we didn't like. Be aware that you cannot park outside the property. We managed to park nearby on the street, but if you can't find a spot, there is a P&D carpark v nearby. The only toilet is downstairs - absolutely fine for us, but some may not like this.

Lovely short break in March, great walks along the coast or through the common to Westward Hoe

Perfect hide away in a perfect location. Local pubs very friendly and love having your pet dogs in, no matter how wet they are, great food in the Seagate too.

No parking which makes drop of and leaving awkward however the location makes it all worth while. Downstairs toilet

25ft from the coastal path and in an interesting village. The cottage was cosy and full of character with comfy beds and the basics for the stay.

If you are 6ft 6" then its a little bit of getting use to else nothing.

Property is well equiped whether its just for a base to explore the fantastic area, or for a chilled relaxing time cosy days/ evenings. Numerous pubs, restaurants and shops within easy walking distance.
