We have travelled the world, and this stay halfway up Schmittenhohe, looking down on Zell am See, was a highlight. We treasured the spectacular view, the sauna, the fresh air, the chickens (and their eggs!), the comfortable and recently renovated accommodations, the fluffy towels and most especially, the gracious hospitality of Maria and Michael, who welcomed our bikes and gave us advice on bike routes and manageable hikes and what to expect of the fickle weather in the Austrian Alps. We left feeling as though we'd made a new, enduring friendship, and we'd go back in a minute.
One word of warning: the road up to the chalet is a bit intimidating the first time you drive it (though the asphalt is good and it is perfectly safe). Without a car, it would be somewhat inconvenient... it is a steep hike up, or a 20 Euro taxi ride from the train station in Zell. Or you can ride the gondola to the top of the mountain and walk down to the chalet. All do-able, if you enjoy the adventure and don't mind the expense.
