The room was very large, plenty of space for our travel crib. The bed very comfortable & overall very clean. The bedroom was lovely & warm. The shower had amazing pressure. We really enjoyed our stay & loved the history & charm of the hotel. The staff were also very kind & a young man on check out even let me see the famous Charles Dickens Suite before we left.
The overall hotel is run down. The carpets are threadbare. Our curtains in our room had rips & the decor is outdated, however the old charm of the hotel makes up for it & if upkeep & a money was put back into it, it would once again be a fantastic place to stay. Also due to circumstances there was no bar or food available but this didnt affect our stay.

Staff were very helpful, we were able to store our luggage there prior to checking in and after checking out as we travelled by train and had time to kill bimbling around the town. The room was clean, nice size and the shower was great.
No on-site restaurant. Plenty of great eateries in the immediate area but due to being lazy we like to eat where we stay.. To be fair, they didn't advertise that there was food available so lack of research on our side of things.

Loved the history in every part of it and easy parking right in the midddle of town
Needs a bit more maintenance and updated decor

Close to town.
Dated décor. Check in only accept cards not cash, wasn't aware of this.
On site parking machine only accepts cash NOT card, also not aware. Informed by desk staff it was cheaper to pay at desk for parking again NOT made aware beforehand. Also, parking bays quite tight to get into. If the carpark is full there are (paid for) 24hr parking but only between 18:00-06:00.
Majority of floorboards creaked when walking on them. Could hear resident upstairs walking around and snoring. Cannot open widows, apparently security locked. Lord knows what happens in emergency. Bath needs replacing, very marked giving dirty appearance. Toilet seat moved when sitting on it.

Location and history of the building.
Needs secondary glazing due to outside noise at the front of the building.

The Charles dickens suite was quirky and very comfortable .
The hotel had nothing no restaurant, no bar, just a reception and rooms. Such a waste of such a wonderful building. We didn’t feel welcomed and although the room was quirky and comfortable it should have been higher quality for £150 spent.

The Lion was a famous old coaching inn, and I remember it as the poshest hotel in Shrewsbury. It used to have a great restaurant, and it is a grade 1 listed building, with grand public rooms. My bed was comfortable and I slept well.
Sadly the Lion is going through a rough patch. It was used as a hostel for refugees for a while and is now for sale. It is beyond faded. It no longer has a restaurant. It doesn’t offer breakfast. Parts are closed off. All the carpets need replacing. All the rooms need redecorating. I hope someone saves it, but it needs a good few million spending on it to bring back its glory days.

It was a very convenient location for the town centre, within a stones throw to the market and The Mardol, High Street and cinema.
Last year there was breakfast provided and a bar, not so this time. There was just the room. Even though was a cleaner virtually every day.

Location was great and the second room we were given was much better
No food available at the hotel no bar just bottles of drink
Not told of parking discount even though we rang to ask
Asked for a room change as first room offered was not suitable and freezing cold
Asked for a blanket as very cold weather no blankets in room give a counter quilt cover not a blanket.
Very noisy over night with guest arriving from 1 am to 3am due to very heavy snow - no offer of compensation after a very disturbed night.

Historical property with high ceilings
Probably needs updating but I know the cost implications!

Dont be put off by the low reviews. Yes it’s in need of a refurbishment and currently not offering food etc but the hotel is historic and is beautiful. If you want modern stay in a travel lodge. Our room was clean, decor great and despite freezing temperatures outside, was lovely and warm. Bed was comfortable and staff were polite. Located in the centre of Shrewsbury so lots of amenities at the doorstep. Owners are doing a good job for what they’ve got. Thanks for a great stay, we will be back!
Nothing I disliked, but would be great if food offered on site as the venue is lovely, but can understand the cost of all that etc

Great Location
Bit old fashioned in places

One of the receptionists was friendly and the bed linen and towels were clean. It's in a great location in the old centre of town. That's as far as the "good" goes.
The over-bath shower only just worked, the bath itself was stained very badly from a leaking tap. The plug hole was partly blocked so the bath pooled and didn't drain properly when showering. The gap between the door and the bath was so tight that it was necessary to stand aside when opening the door. The toilet seat was broken. The old lino on the bathroom floor was split. The bed, was ancient and had a very old mattress with springs sticking up. Every part of the floor creaked when walking across the room. There was an unpleasant smell on the stairs and in the corridor. There was constant noise from loud creaking as other guests moved around. Couldn't get a decent night's sleep. Parking was £5 / night. I'm not awa re they offer breakfast - there was a dining room but it was always empty. £171 for three nights Mid week may be reasonable, but it was very very poor. Overall it's very "tired" to say the least - the areas I saw have clearly not been decorated or anything in many years. I doubt it will survive much longer in its current form as I doubt that anybody would go back.

Good location
Could not close window in bathroom. Could not turn on taps for a bath only shower available. No breakfast option. TV small and hard to operate. We were on 3rd floor with no lift. Signage In hotel was incorrect. Door key did not work and had to run up and down 3 flights of stairs to get it changed. Could not use front entrance if returning after 11pm had to use back door and ring a bell to get in. Much of amenities promised on booking not available when we arrived.

The building is absolutely fascinating and full of history. It was clearly explained on booking that there was no breakfast/ dining facilities, but staff were able to give fantastic suggestions for local restaurants, coffee shops etc. The staff were lovely and friendly. The room was excellent, nice and roomy, cosy bed, bathroom etc. We overlooked the road but were not disturbed by traffic. We were able to use the lovely lounges to work on project in plenty of comfort. My colleague and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
For two travelling thespians, it couldn't have been better! No complaints from me.

The building is absolutely beautiful and it's location exceptional these are the ONLY good points
On arrival you are immediately impressed by it's obvious history but unfortunately it smelt damp and musty. There were very limited choices at the bar and staff seemed unsure how to cope. Room was clean but EVERYTHING felt old and dirty. Will NOT return and would NOT recommend.
