Great location
Lovely grounds
Vending machine need with snacks in main building
Good kitchen in out building
Nothing was great
8.0 / 10.0
Friendly and welcoming staff, warm and super clean and comfy room, stunning building and grounds in a fantastic location.
The WiFi was ver, very poor, the kitchen was really chilly and small (not a problem for me but could be an issue when busy), and it was depressing to watch the price of my pre booked non refundable room drop dramatically in price as the date crept closer.

Nice place where you can take your friends or family, good value
Conditions of rooms ( some paint refreshing will help to make it look better)

It is a great location for walks while Castleton at Christmas is great. The breakfasts were good.
I wasn't in the main building and it wasn't good that my card didn't give me access to the members kitchen at night which was most unexpected.

I really like the lounge. The view through the windows from the lounge is spectacular. It's very peaceful. People in Castleton are very friendly to me. The staff at this YHA, especially Rosie, Gemma, and Jack were very helpful and nice. I was there during New Year's Eve; really appreciate the staff and volunteers who worked despite it's holidays seasons and still have us warm and nice experience with lots of smiles and "Happy New Year" wishes.

It's in a great location a few minutes walk into Castleton. The building is fabulous, full of history. Accommodation was warm, comfortable and we had en-suite facilities. It has all the usual YH facilities, bar, kitchen, various lounges and a relaxed atmosphere. Everything looked well kept and clean. We don't do breakfast so I can't comment. Overall, we had a great stay.
Our room was too warm for us. Apart from that, there was nothing to dislike.

Location. Walking distance to castleton
Stayed with husband and daughter overnight. For £100 we felt this was poor value for money. Stayed in annex, showers smelt so fusty and damp needed to close the door, didn't go in. Radiators filthy. Limited hot water. Chose youth hostel as stayed in one before and felt it was good value, but this felt damp and dingy. Good location. Short walk into castleton. Probably good with a bunch of mates, sharing the cost just for a bed when in the area.

The location.
Staff were very nice and helpful (although, in some respects inflexible)
This is an ideal place for a young Family. The facilities are great as you can store and cook your own food, relax in the common areas, library or even outside in good weather.
We were there to attend a training course. The meeting room was cold. The dining room was cold. WiFi was poor in areas that we used but available in common areas
The dormatory I used had no heating but the staff put in an oil fired heater which sufficed.
Hot water took an age to arrive.
Essentially the location was not ideal formwhat we were using it for bit that is more out fault for choosing it than the hostel.
Sometimes we felt we were being treated like a bunch of school kids but I guess that this is what the staff have to deal with normally.
Overall, the building is great for kids and Families and set in a fantastic location to experience the outdoors.
It is not ideal to hold a five day business conference for adults who are more used to staying in hotels.
So, our fault for ever think it would work!

Lovely old characterful building but nice modern welcoming reception and friendly staff. Well equipped kitchen. Perfect location for discovering the area
The shower in our block (room M6 I think) was unusable. Nowhere to hang or put dry clothes while you shower, not a single hook! Shower opened directly onto hallway so the large gap under the door meant water spilled out straight onto the hall carpet so wet socks just walking past the shower

This is in a beautiful location, the staff were exceptional when I booked in and although the rooms could do with a refresh it was clean and comfortable.
No hot water in the morning at 7 am.

Fabulous location, exceptional and interesting building set a beautiful grounds. The local area is stunning in Autumn. Loved the historical descriptions and info on the walls regarding the Losehill Hall’s history. Lots of sitting areas and self catering facilities. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Our room was cold and the shower didn’t work! But I think that was not typical.

I like the staff and the breakfast, both food and service.
We didn’t even have a chair in the room. I am not sure the bathroom was washed before we arrived.

Characterful property with great space on the grounds, Losehill just behind it and Castleton a short walk/drive. I've stayed a few times and enjoyed my time here, the staff are helpful and facilities excellent. Thanks for good memories.

Big kitchen with lots of cooking facilities, fridges, utensils etc.
Wifi is very poor in the Mews annex, and the phone signal is not strong enough but then again it is a rural ara.

Room was very good and clean. Staff was accommodating. Board games are a nice touch.
The shared 'guest' kitchen is too small and it gets very overcrowded at times. The bigger 'school' kitchen we were only allowed to use on weekends but that was great and cleaner.

Great location, beds comfortable bit of a clean needed in the rooms skirting boards and down side of beds. shower and toilet clean and easy to use. Kitchen clean and well stocked with everything you need.
Staff not very knowledgeable about area but pleasant

The location is ideal for early morning starts
The first room I was shown to absolutely stank not possible to sleep in and had no ventilation, second room I was shown to was very run down, paint peeling off walls, smell of mould and uncomfortable bed.

This property is in a beautiful location. The walk to Castleton takes about 15 minutes and there are two options - through footpaths with gorgeous views, or along the road which is easier after dark. The grounds are large and attractive.
We paid £100 for a private room for two people with shared bathroom. It was outrageously poor for this price. To be honest, it would have felt too expensive even at half that price.
The whole experience was incredibly uncomfortable.
The room was very gloomy and sparse, with very little light and certainly no view of the glorious countryside around (or anything else). The room was hot and stuffy. The roof window opened only a crack, and a large sign told guests to keep windows closed to stop squirrels getting in. There was no fan provided.
Our room had a sloping ceiling with a low-hanging metal beam which was incredibly dangerous for the person in the top bunk (and it was covered in alarming warning signs pointing that out!). It was not possible to sit anywhere at all in the room with a straight back - neither bed had enough headroom to allow for this, and there was no chair in the room. We were each provided with only one extremely thin pillow (about one inch thick) - not enough to sleep at all comfortably, let alone use to prop ourselves up in bed. So the only options were to lie flat in bed or stand in the very small amount of space which allowed that.
The website promised that each person would have a bedside reading lamp, but neither of us did - the only light was the overhead light and the switch couldn't be reached from the bunk beds. The mattresses were hard and plasticky.
There were no cups or glasses provided in the room or in the nearby kitchen, so it was impossible to have a drink of water in the night other than by leaning over the bathroom tap. (Our room was a long way away from the reception and cafe area, including a long outdoor path, so we couldn't really return there by the time we realised there was no way of getting a drink in the night.)
Communal areas were in an awful state, with thick layers of dust and dead insects in the stairwell, mould all around the bath and shower, and multiple examples of damaged paint and furniture.

Too short a stay

Location; size of room; available site facilities; amicable, informative staff.
Lack of general small table /shelf in bedroom.
Shower needs additional screen to prevent excess water on bathroom floor.
Lack of body wash and shampoo in shower cubicle.
Lack.of hooks in bathroom, for toewls cloths etc.
Tea and coffee facilities in room would be desirable..
Price reflects poor value for money, but only in respect of comments above.😊

Unbeatable location and lovely staffs. The kitchen is well equiped. The herd of sheeps is bonus. Exceptional value for hikers in the region.
The cleaniness especially those carpets
7.0 / 10.0
Great location, only about 15 minutes walk into the village. Clean & good facilities. Staff very helpful. Good coffee machine and ice cream cabinet are nice touches in reception
Bunk beds creaked with every tiny movement, the door to the wing had a very loud squeak and slammed hard every time someone came through (some WD40 and a door dampener would sort this) and the mattresses are very hard. Room was very hot but weather was very hot at time

It is historic, magnificent and very stylish I would love to stay in such old castle. The location is amazing, just few minutes walk to the village center and the staff is amazing and super friendly!
I feel really sorry that such place is not taken care of properly. The building needs renovation and no doubt it will be iconic if it is taken care of, renovated and changed into proper hostel. Also, I am very disappointed about cleaning especially the toilet and shower room. A lot of rust in the furniture, the toilet needs proper cleaning not just changing the trash bin especially the floor of the shower room.

Historical nature of the building, not revamped too much but very comfortable place to stay. Loved the sheep!
