A smell of moth balls which I did enjoy the charm of still follows me but it’s definitely preferable to moths!

An excellent little gem of a hotel, inside the walls of Lucca, and a very short walk from the train station. There are only five rooms, and the hotel is only open 7 months of the year, so if it’s available when you go, BOOK IT. The rooms are spotlessly clean, kept so by the owner who comes in every day to do so (and he has great advice on day trips from the city as well). The rooms are not 5* luxury properties - but they have a large and comfortable bed, a good-sized shower with plenty of hot water, a wardrobe to hang clothes, a small desk, and a good sized window looking out to a small garden. Because it’s in an ancient building with thick stone walls, the rooms are quiet and you will sleep like a baby. Note that the owner is only there for a few hours a day, and that the desk is not manned 24/7. You get your key with a fob that gets you in the front door, and if you check in after he has left, you get an access code that will let you in the front door and your key will be in your room. For someone whose idea of a hotel for travel is to sleep comfortably, get up, shower, and leave until you come back to change for dinner, then this is the perfect choice,
Nothing really needs improving. Do note that an old stone building will get cooler at night, and the radiators are on only during specific months - but the extra blanket in the wardrobe was more than enough to be comfortable (and if you are there in a very hot month, you will appreciate coming into a cooler room!).

Location was good.
Mirko was a very good host and affable.
Size of room and shower room very small.
Lighting poor if you want to read. Not like brochure pictures.
Facilities very basic, tea/coffee making facilities in communal corridor.

I decided to do a solo mini trip for my birthday which would include two nights in Lucca. This hotel is fantastic and situated within the city walls. I caught the train from Pisa Central to Lucca which took around 40 minutes.
When I got off at Lucca, the hotel was around a ten minute walk which takes you over the historic wall of the city.
Everything in the city is really no more than fifteen minutes walk.
Great place to stay and would stay again.

The property was clean and the perfect size for us to use as a base as we were there for a wedding so we’re not using it for anything else. Mirko the host was lovely and cleaned the room daily.

We stayed in La Colonna Lucca from 29th July - 4th August 2025. We had a splendid stay there! Whitin the old walls of Lucca, this is a typical historic Lucca-house (in a good state), with Mirko as a magnificent host, very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, quiet and looking out on a garden. The temperature inside, it being on the ground floor, is comfortably cool despite it being hot in Lucca. La Colonna is situated very very near all highlights and the old walls of the city. A special feature of it for history lovers: it has two columns of an old church in the hallway! We absolutely recommend this accommodation and will certainly go back there! From: Ton & Tonny (Netherlands).

Excellent location. Lucca is much nicer than Pisa. The host is wonderful! Nice tall ceilings, cool enough in the evenings. The room was small but fine for a short stay.
Ventilation in the bathroom was a slight issue. But the water pressure was brilliant and it was very clean.

Amazing location and nice host!
The interior felt more outdated than it seemed in the pictures. Our room was right next to the reception and did not feel very private.

It was a lovely room, and bathroom, great value in and incredible location (also about 8 mins walk from a 10euro per 24hs car park and 15min away from a free one). Host was accesible and available to answer any questions. It was great.
This is pushing it, as for the amount I payed it was excellent. But if it was mine, I would make the reception and corridor lighter, paint it off white/cream, change the lighting to a brighter one, and would absolutely would change the fragrance used. Also the padding on the doors, which I understand they are to reduce noice, but could be done in a prettier way. Coming from Argentina as is, it has a bit of a Telo feel. It all feels a bit cheap. But then, the lovely surprise opening my room door and a beatufilly decorated, big en suite bedroom awatited. With little money the reception and corridor could match the rooms. I loved the drinking fountain. There is an amazing fragrance shop in Lucca that is not cheap but affordable for a business - one of those smells will instantly elevate the place. It was actually great.

This was a perfect place for me. It's quiet and centrally located, and the bed was comfortable and the towels were high quality. I was able to hang my clothes in a small wardrobe.
Check-in was easy with a code, and the friendly staff was readily available if needed.
The only negative is something that the management can't control. There was a bad smell in the bathroom the first day, but I think it was from the plumbing or outside, as the bathroom was clean. The smell was better the second day and afterwards.

The location, within the walls was superb. It only provided beverages….do it yourself. It is very near a delightful , small piazza nearby with a delightfully , family run cafe. It is NOT a bed and breakfast.
Mirko the owner/ manager is delightful and very helpful.
I you don’t catch him in person and he is there every morning, he is very responsive to texts.
Do not expect a place with all modern conveniences . It is a medieval building. However the bathrooms are modern.
The only problem I encountered was that my second week was unseasonably cool but it straddled the time when all indoor heating is to be turned off in Italy. After a couple of days Mirko broke the rules and started heating again, thankfully.

I booked La Colonna for my elderly parents, who stayed for four nights. They had a fantastic time and were very impressed with the room, the location and host Mirko's excellent service. We are very glad that we chose La Colonna, Mirko made everything very easy. Would definitely use again, thank you :)
Nothing, it was exactly as hoped for.

La Colonna is in an excellent location inside Lucca's city walls close to Piazza Anfiteatro and the main attractions in the old city. Very cozy and comfortable and my room had a garden view and well appointed en suite shower room. The host, Mirko, is delightful and happy to help with any questions.
Ideally, I would have liked fresh coffee and/or a minimal breakfast available in the mornings, but cafes are fairly close at hand.

Lovely hotel in an excellent location inside the city walls. Mirko (the owner) is really helpful and friendly.
Being an old historic church noises within the building tend to travel (despite Mirko's best efforts with signs around the hotel asking for quiet during certain times of day) so if you are a light sleeper this may disturb you.
