The Duke Hotel

The staff were wonderful, as was the breakfast. The location was very good and the room was comfortable with good consumables which were replenished daily.

The conditioner was very odd. It smelt old and didn’t behave like conditioner .. more like a body lotion. All the other toiletries were very nice.

It is up quite a steep hill- not a problem for us- but might be for some people!

My wife and I have stayed in the Duke (previously Duke of Richmond) at least 10 times in the past 13 years, we love the location and the Seaview rooms with balcony and comfortable beds.

The quality of service has deteriorated and the special touches have pretty much all disappeared. Not much remains of what was once a treat with top notch customer service. The Duke of Richmond had amazing staff who had been there many years who treated us like VIPs. Now no familiar faces, no attempt to get to know you and no evidence of enthusiasm. When it was the DoR we had complementary newspapers every morning, bottled water and towels in the foyer when we went for an early run, an evening turn down with chocolates, jars of sweets by the bar and the most amazing breakfasts and pretty much anything we wanted on or off the menu and always with banter and smiles. Breakfast was included in the stay, and what I hated was that I ordered Avocado on toast and asked for an egg, I was presented with a tiny piece of bread with avocado and 3 cherry tomatoes on top, (the price on the menu was an eyewatering £15), and I was then charged £4 extra for the egg! I don't eat a huge amount, yet the full breakfast at £19 would have been an option, so no logic in this meanness! For a client who has probably spent around £10k over the years I am sorry to have to complain, but the £4 for an egg was ridiculous!

Breakfast was hurried, disorganised Decor was a bit hit and miss . Looked like masking tape had been put up around the room.
