We stayed in Zaandam as an alternative to Amsterdam and used the train to commute there everyday. Late at night, you can also get an Uber for 30-40 euros. The accommodation prices in Amsterdam were simply outrageous. Zandam is very well connected by train and the hotel is extremely close to the train station: just a 3-5' walk. The staff in the reception was very polite and helpful. Other than that, the room was very small, not dirty but not entirely clean, and it didn't even have a hairdryer. Our towels and sheets were never changed during our 4 night stay. We paid 150 per night for this mediocre hotel (including the city tax and the 25 euro early check in fee).
