We really loved the Japanese style Ryokan. As westerners, it did take a bit of getting used to but we really did settle in and enjoyed it. The food was amazing and a lot of it. The staff does speak English and Google translate helps a lot. The beauty is incredible at the the onsen and the village!
Not the didn't like it but different...
As Americans, we didn't feel chatting everone up was appropriate plus our Japanese skills aren't good. It is really helpful and necessary to read the manual and ask questions because there are a lot of unwritten rules, manners, and etiquette of an onsen. Such as the men's onsen being on one side at night and then switching to the other side in the morning. Guess who went in the women's side in the morning? Me! They do want a days advance notice for shuttles and taxis. It is Japanese style so you will sleep on comfortable futon mats on tatami.

Lovely place, very clean, helpful and friendly staff, hot spring spa was amazing, food was good.
Little tricky to get to and we didn't know about the free shuttle from the bus station. Food was good but there wasn't much choice. Breakfast was Japanese style which might not appeal to everyone.

Onsen was nice but a little tired. Evening meal was good. Location was peaceful and quiet.
No drinking water in the rooms and a little overpriced. Very basic.
