About this apartment rental
As early as 1998, Rysum was named the most beautiful village in Lower Saxony. Surrounding the church—located at the highest point of the historic village on a mound and home to one of the oldest functional organs in the world—are the former farmworkers’ and craftsmen’s houses as well as large farmsteads, arranged in a circular pattern, creating the distinctive charm of this circular village.
On the outer ring of the village stands the Gulfhof, believed to have been built by Ufko Andreesen van Senden around 1890. In recent years, it has been extensively renovated with great attention to detail in accordance with historic preservation standards and converted into an exceptional vacation residence featuring 15 high-quality apartments.
Even during the renovation phase, the old building successfully withstood many adverse conditions—including wind, weather, and, above all, water—and now proudly shines in new splendor.
All apartments are duplexes and feature modern floor plans. By incorporating the historic post-and-beam framework into the interior design, the units also gain a special, distinctive character. Underfloor heating, solid wood parquet floors, and fixtures and ceramic tiles from renowned manufacturers ensure a high level of living comfort. Each apartment includes a spacious terrace as well as a parking space with a storage shed. The outdoor areas of the approximately 4,000-square-meter property are characterized, particularly on the south and east sides, by generous green spaces that have been tastefully landscaped with shrubs and hedges. A grove of mature trees rounds out the overall picture.
The Gulfhof van Senden is the ideal starting point for a wide range of activities: hiking, biking, or kayaking in the Krummhörn region; cultural excursions to popular nearby towns such as Greetsiel, Pilsum, Norden/Norddeich, and Emden; or even day trips to the nearby East Frisian islands of Borkum, Norderney, and Juist. The somewhat secluded, little-known natural beach at Knock is just a short bike ride away and is a special highlight.

Welcome to Hof van Senden, a farm built around 1890, which was lovingly renovated into a vacation home in 2022, 2023, and 2024 in accordance with historic preservation guidelines. Here, modernity meets over 130 years of history.
Hof van Senden spans a property of approximately 4,000 square meters and is the perfect place for a year-round vacation, far away from the stress of everyday life in a unique setting!
It is located in the historic circular settlement of the picturesque East Frisian village of Rysum, only about 10 km from Emden. Both the historic town center with its idyllic streets and the North Sea coast—just about 1 km away—invite you to take walks through the village or along the dike.
Our bright and comfortably furnished “Fenja” duplex vacation apartment offers 56 square meters of space—plenty of room for a restful and relaxing vacation for the whole family of up to 4 people. You can access the entrance area to our apartment through the so-called “Gulf”—the term used in East Frisia for the former barn section of this historically restored building.
Spread over two floors, you’ll find modern, high-quality amenities, including real wood parquet flooring, underfloor heating, a smart TV, internet radio (in the kitchen and bathroom), a dishwasher, a Nespresso machine, toaster, microwave, Wi-Fi, and much more. On the first floor, you’ll find a spacious kitchen area fully equipped with all amenities, as well as a harmoniously furnished living and dining area. There is also a guest restroom and a storage room. A wooden toy cart with a selection of children’s books, as well as colorful Duplo and LEGO blocks, are available for our youngest guests.
You can also enjoy the tranquility on the terrace with the garden furniture we’ve provided.
The upper floor features two tastefully furnished bedrooms. The modern bathroom is equipped with a walk-in shower, a toilet, and a heated towel rack. The upper staircase area is additionally secured with a stair gate for our youngest guests. Furthermore, all accessible electrical outlets in the vacation rental are equipped with built-in child safety covers.

Laundry facilities are available. The complex has a washing machine and dryer (for a fee).
You can park your car safely in the parking space assigned to the apartment. If you’re arriving in an electric car, you’ll also find a charging station in this parking lot (billed based on usage).
To ensure that guests with allergies feel completely comfortable at the Fenja vacation rental, pets are not allowed. Please understand that a special cleaning fee of €250 will be charged for any violations of this policy.

Experience the charm of the historic village of Rysum, a beautiful pile-dwelling village in the Krummhörn region of the North Sea, about 10 km west of Emden and right next to the North Sea coast. Marvel at the circular layout of the buildings, or visit the church with one of the oldest playable organs in Northern Europe, the Rysum Mill from 1895, or one of the oldest farmhands’ cottages dating back to 1766. Don’t miss the small bakery near the Hof van Senden, where you can buy not only crispy rolls but also delicious cakes and pastries.
Discover the natural beach at Rysumer Knock or take a bike ride over the dike to the resort town of “Greetsiel,” including a detour to the Otto Lighthouse or a visit to “The Old Brewery” (tavern) in Pilsum.
