As early as 1998, Rysum was named the most beautiful village in Lower Saxony. Surrounding the church—located at the highest point of the historic Warfendorf and home to one of the oldest playable organs in the world—are the former farmworkers’ and artisans’ houses, as well as large farmsteads, arranged in a circular pattern, creating the distinctive charm of this circular village.
On the outer ring of the village stands the Gulfhof, believed to have been built by Ufko Andreesen van Senden around 1890. In recent years, it has been extensively renovated with great attention to detail and in accordance with historic preservation standards, and converted into an exceptional vacation residence featuring 15 high-quality apartments.
Even during the renovation phase, the old building successfully withstood many adverse conditions—including wind, weather, and, above all, water—and now proudly shines in new splendor.
All apartments are duplexes and feature modern floor plans. By incorporating the historic post-and-beam framework into the interior design, the units also gain a special, distinctive character. Underfloor heating, real wood parquet floors, and fixtures and ceramic tiles from renowned manufacturers ensure a high level of living comfort. Each apartment includes a spacious terrace as well as a parking space with a storage shed. The outdoor areas of the approximately 4,000-square-meter property feature particularly generous green spaces on the south and east sides, tastefully landscaped with shrubs and hedges. A grove of mature trees rounds out the overall picture.
The Gulfhof van Senden is the ideal starting point for a wide range of activities: hiking, biking, or kayaking in the Krummhörn region; cultural excursions to popular nearby towns such as Greetsiel, Pilsum, Norden/Norddeich, and Emden; or even day trips to the nearby East Frisian islands of Borkum, Norderney, and Juist. The somewhat secluded, little-known natural beach at the Knock is just a short bike ride away and is a special highlight.
Gulfhof van Senden - Klaar Kiming (first floor/upper floor):
Welcome to the historic Gulfhof “van Senden” in Apartment 15, “Klaar Kiming.” The name comes from the Frisian sailors’ dialect and means: “wide view, clear mind.” It fits perfectly with the East Frisian landscape and the North Sea.
The duplex apartment consists of 3 rooms spanning 68 square meters with a southeast-facing terrace, as well as a small outdoor garden shed located right next to the parking spaces. The North Sea is about 1 km away. Up to 4 people can stay in the 2 bedrooms. Underfloor heating, exposed beams, and hardwood floors create a cozy atmosphere and ensure a warm, homey feel.
The apartment’s location and amenities allow you—depending on your needs—to enjoy either a relaxing, peaceful vacation or an action-packed, active vacation. Children are very welcome.
The first floor features a living area, an open kitchen, and a guest restroom:
The living area features a seating area, a large TV, and a children’s play corner. The kitchen—in addition to a dining table with 4 chairs and 1 children’s high chair—is fully equipped with an induction stove, range hood, oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, and kitchen appliances such as a Nespresso machine, electric kettle, and toaster. From the living area, you can step out onto your terrace overlooking a large meadow, which can be used by children for playing, for example. With adjustable garden chairs, a table, and a Weber charcoal grill, you can unwind at the end of the day or watch the sunrise.
The attic features 2 bedrooms with 1 double bed and 2 single beds, 1 clothes rack, and 1 closet in the hallway. The windows in both bedrooms can be darkened, and insect screens keep out pesky visitors. A child safety gate on the stairs protects your little ones. The bathroom features a walk-in shower, a hair dryer, and a makeup mirror.
Additionally, all accessible electrical outlets in the vacation rental are equipped with built-in child safety covers.
